Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of large umbrellas set up for those who didn't enjoy a good pelting of various summer related materials. Because some people are weird like that.

There was also a splendid selection of food and beverages under a canopy to keep from ingesting suntan lotion. See? Your faculty thought of everything. Except how to make the island behave.

That you'll have to deal with.

[Please wait for the OCD is up! This is the FIRST post for general mingling. Please use this post first, if your browser can handle the comment load. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are here and there is more room for mingling here.]

Petra definitely felt she had not mingled enough.

Given the weather, she'd brought a parasol, and had run by the store to pick up a few more cheap umbrellas to hand out to any newbies she saw in need--either of protection, or of reassurance they weren't crazy. Or both. She figured the old guard could fend for themselves by now on both fronts.

Loki found an umbrella to hide beneath, keeping his plate of completely unhealthy food close as he watched the newcomers.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with observing. It was what everyone else was doing!

It was possible that Alec was allergic to mingling.

He walked exactly as much as he needed to in order to locate an empty table from which he could survey the rest of the picnic, then stationed himself there and watched things.

After a while, he got up for long enough to retrieve an iced tea and get bumped into four times. But then he was back.

It figured that having actually shown up to one of these things for once, this happened.

A large patch of her hair stained purple, Cara leant against a tree, sullenly sucking on a red-flavoured ice-block.

Topher -- with his bottle of sunscreen that he really should have applied more liberally, especially around the nose area -- was resigned to mingling at least a bit today.

First, he mingled with a plate of food. But people would come next. Maybe.

Well, personally, Frank was always up for more mingling. Lots more.

After locating and educating his little sibling on the ways of the island, he gathered up some food and set off to talk to people. He'd be lying if he said the heat wasn't a tiny bit of a deterrent to proper picnic-enjoyment, but he could deal.

...By taking breaks every so often to run back to the dorms and sit on the air-conditioner, yeah. Shut up.

Kaidan was - perhaps predictably, for anyone who knew him - hanging back. He'd secured some protein to eat, then retreated, both into his own thoughts and into the actual darker corners of the area.

Funny thing, that. Atton never had that problem.

Atton was happily abusing the picnic tables, though, tossing his feet up on the bench and taking up a lot more space than he really needed to.

And a lot more food. But hey, if you couldn't gorge yourself on free food, then what was the point?

Sia had probably not mingled enough, no. She was curious to see whether the picnic seemed any different now that she'd been here for a bit, though, and to see what the new people were like.

She really wished they could have had this indoors, though. She felt sorry for anyone who arrived here thinking they'd be going to school someplace temperate.

Stacey wanted to check out the new boys. She'd be going on vacation soon, and that would leave her two weeks in which she couldn't look at the potential pretty, so she thought it might be a good idea to get that in while she could.

She was maybe looking to see if there were any cute teachers she wouldn't mind staring at through a class period, too. Don't judge.

Ahhh. Newbie day. The chance to sit there and look piteously on the fresh meat stumbling onto this island completely unawares. There was something morbidly fascinating about it, and, besides, someone as bad with money as Britta would never turn down free food, unless, you know, it was all meat or something. But there were definitely some vegetarian options, and she loaded up a plate (which she hoped was biodegradable!), found a picnic table, kicked up her feet, and enjoyed the view.

Evan had given the mingling thing his best attempt at the airport, and it had turned out... more or less okay, for him. He wasn't sure if that meant that he should press his luck, or if maybe now would be a good time to head back to his room to unpack the... the handful of clothes he'd brought, or something.

He decided to split the difference, sitting under a tree in an attempt to keep his book safe from the weather that was slightly weirder than he was used to, and reading. He'd probably stand out well enough as a new kid as it was, and maybe he'd get up and start introducing himself to people a little later, once he'd worked up the nerve to.

Fawn had contemplating skipping the picnic, staying in her room, or maybe going up to the roof, just so she wouldn't have to deal with so many people. She'd sit up there, high above them all, watching them like ants and scribbling in her notebook about the futility of life, about the pure animal mindlessness by which people lived their lives. She'd gotten through a few rough poems until her stomach started singing to her, reminding her that there was foot at the picnic, and so she went ahead, closed up the notebook, and trudged down into the festering pit of humanity.

She filled a plate, found a picnic table that no one seemed to bother gathering around, sat down, and ate, quietly watching and making mental notes for future poems.

Fawn had noticed Petra, of course, and she noticed the umbrellas she had brought with her, which made her smile a little wryly as she contemplated whether or not to be social. But a little bit wouldn't hurt, and she wiped a little suntan lotion off her shoulder as she headed over.

"That's a good idea," she offered.

After meeting with her... assigned sibling, Liara had somewhat more of an idea of where she was.

It didn't explain much else. But there was that.

She sat down at one of the picnic tables, poking gingerly at some food she'd picked up. She had no idea whether these... humans... were dextro- or levo-amino-based, and she didn't want to risk poisoning herself.

So she'd just sit here. With her food. Watching the humans warily.

The clearly erroneous situation with his roommate (http://fandomhigh.livejournal.com/3146024.html?thread=192111656#t192111656) had left Stannis in particular surly form. His teeth ground together as his thoughts ground out what he could do to prove that a mistake had been made and that it be fixed immediately. The trouble was, he didn't even really know who to go to about such a problem, so perhaps he would have to find out. His "big sibling" might be of service there, he supposed.

Until then, he was just going to stew about how displeased he was, glaring at innocent passersby without even realizing it.

"Hey," he said by way of introduction. "I'm guessing new kid."

"You're here!" Yes, Frank. Yes, she was. "Hey. Can I sit?"

Fortunately for him, his plate was currently filled mainly with vegetables and dip, so Britta might let him live. Lucky, lucky Frank.

[identity profile] shestheworst.livejournal.com 2012-06-30 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"I am!" Britta confirmed Frank's observation with a grin, sitting up and lowering her legs from the picnic table to make room for him. "And you can. Plop a squat, Frank. How are you?"

Liara jumped a little for the umpteenth time that day. "New... kid?" she echoed. "...Yes, I suppose I am."

Don't sound so befuddled, Liara.

"Pretty good," Frank said after a moment's consideration. "I could live without the heat, but, you know. Hiding inside isn't going to make it go away." That was terrible logic, Frank. Terrible. "How about you? Enjoying yourself so far?"

[identity profile] shestheworst.livejournal.com 2012-06-30 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Britta's head bobbed a little. "So far, so good," she said. "Scoping out the fresh meat."

She turned her head to grin at him. The kind of grin that served as a mental pat on the head. "Hard to imagine just a few months ago, that was you out there, all bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, and not even knowing about ball pits."
