Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of large umbrellas set up for those who didn't enjoy a good pelting of various summer related materials. Because some people are weird like that.

There was also a splendid selection of food and beverages under a canopy to keep from ingesting suntan lotion. See? Your faculty thought of everything. Except how to make the island behave.

That you'll have to deal with.

[Please wait for the OCD is up! This is the FIRST post for general mingling. Please use this post first, if your browser can handle the comment load. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are here and there is more room for mingling here.]

Petra definitely felt she had not mingled enough.

Given the weather, she'd brought a parasol, and had run by the store to pick up a few more cheap umbrellas to hand out to any newbies she saw in need--either of protection, or of reassurance they weren't crazy. Or both. She figured the old guard could fend for themselves by now on both fronts.

Fawn had noticed Petra, of course, and she noticed the umbrellas she had brought with her, which made her smile a little wryly as she contemplated whether or not to be social. But a little bit wouldn't hurt, and she wiped a little suntan lotion off her shoulder as she headed over.

"That's a good idea," she offered.

"Fawn, hey!" Petra said, smiling at her little sib. "Do you need one?" She could make an exception to her 'newbies only' rule for Fawn. "Sun protection is great and all, but not when it's all over my clothes. How does it feel to not be a new kid any more?" She gave Fawn a wry look before adding, "Still pretty freaky, right?"

"Smart," Karla said, nodding at the parasol. "Kiss kiss, Petra, how's your summer going? No other polyester disasters you had to rescue the student body from, I hope."

"No, thank God, that was a one-time thing," Petra told her with a grin. "Although...." she made a show of peering out from under the edge of her parasol. "This seems like it might be a threat to my wardrobe, too."

"I'm taking it as a reminder from Fandom that I still can't tan," Karla admitted, petting a red and peeling nose. Even with all the suntan lotion around Ender's house on Naboo, she'd managed to get a burn. "I keep trying, hoping I'll have gotten the hang of it since last time. No such luck yet."

"Well, sun protection is no joke," Petra said. "Wrinkles and cancer? I'll pass. But this is probably a little extreme."

Karla didn't have much to worry about, cancer-wise, but it didn't seem like the kind of thing to point out. Was it possible to say something like that and not have it come out sounding snarky?

Diplomacy! Karla was learning it! (Slowly.)

"Though it does give us a little extra ammunition to convince the males that they really should be upholding the Fandom welcome picnic tradition," she noted, instead. "The popsicles, not so much, but the lotion can be useful."

If Petra winced a little at 'males,' it was just a reflex thing. She got that Karla's world had different vocabulary, it was just kind of a delicate area with her. "Plus the rain of nonsense can't ruin their shirts if they're not wearing them," she said thoughtfully.

"Exactly," Karla said, catching Petra's wince and not facepalming by sheer force of will. Sigh. One day she would remember to think before speaking, she really would. "And they won't have to worry about sunburns with the lotion. I think this might be Fandom's way of asking them to lose their shirts."

She adopted a pious expression. "Surely they won't want to disappoint Fandom!"

Petra assumed a similarly pious expression and said, "After all, who knows what this place would come up with if they disappointed it," as she twirled her parasol some more.

"I think we owe it to the newbies to make sure they have a chance to settle in before we find out," Karla said. They were so kind to be worried about the new students like that, weren't they? "I'd hate for anyone to be driven home the second day they were here because something unpleasant invaded or came up from the sewers or...whatever else Fandom could cook up."

THEY WERE HEROES, HERE. HEROES.

"Maybe those creepy dolls were a punishment for the guys not taking their shirts off enough," Petra suggested. "We wouldn't want that again."

"You know, I'm pretty sure that's it," Karla said, nodding with Utmost Solemnity. "And probably the bears that attacked graduation."

Even though something always attacked graduation. Details.

"This feels like something we should take an active stance on. We might need to accept the mission of getting as many ma--guys?--shirtless as we possibly can today. Do you think we're up to it?"
wasthecuteone: (I'm pretty happy about me)

"Do you think we should find other like-minded people?" Karla asked. "See if we can't convince them to help us help the island? There have to be more civic-minded students than just us."

Karla raised her hand for a high-five. "You care to choose?" she asked. "Or should we settle this with a coin toss?"
