Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of large umbrellas set up for those who didn't enjoy a good pelting of various summer related materials. Because some people are weird like that.

There was also a splendid selection of food and beverages under a canopy to keep from ingesting suntan lotion. See? Your faculty thought of everything. Except how to make the island behave.

That you'll have to deal with.

"You're here!" Yes, Frank. Yes, she was. "Hey. Can I sit?"

Fortunately for him, his plate was currently filled mainly with vegetables and dip, so Britta might let him live. Lucky, lucky Frank.

"I am!" Britta confirmed Frank's observation with a grin, sitting up and lowering her legs from the picnic table to make room for him. "And you can. Plop a squat, Frank. How are you?"

"Pretty good," Frank said after a moment's consideration. "I could live without the heat, but, you know. Hiding inside isn't going to make it go away." That was terrible logic, Frank. Terrible. "How about you? Enjoying yourself so far?"

Britta's head bobbed a little. "So far, so good," she said. "Scoping out the fresh meat."

She turned her head to grin at him. The kind of grin that served as a mental pat on the head. "Hard to imagine just a few months ago, that was you out there, all bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, and not even knowing about ball pits."

"Hey, the ball pit thing was understandable," Frank defended, but he was grinning. "I bet at least two of those new kids are from the past too."

Then he spotted the blue girl.

"Or... other universes. Somewhere ball pits aren't used."

"Hey," Britta snorted, "maybe ball pits are universal. You don't know that. And at least two? Frank. That's a pretty measly number, considering right here," she pointed her finger between herself and him, "talking, are two people from the past. I think it would be more unlikely to find two kids that are from the right timeline."

"There you go, then," he concluded with all his deductive powers. "I bet there's a whole bunch of people just waiting to be introduced to entire rooms full of colorful balls." Beat. "Including my little sibling, who I think might get crushed by them. Maybe I won't take her there."

"Awww, you have a little sibling!" Britta cooed. "Our little Frank is all grown up. Who is she? Is she nice? Is she cute? Is she from the past?"

Frank made a halfhearted attempt to lightly swat at her, which didn't succeed due to a combination of the heat and the fact that he was too much of a gentleman to really go through with it. "She's Arietty Clock, and she's about half a foot tall," Frank reported sheepishly. "Very nice, and... cute, sure." He blushed, then amended, "But, you know, yeah. Half a foot tall."

"Like, literally, half a foot?" asked Britta, holding out her hands...to the approximation of a foot. Whatever. Did she look like a ruler?

"...Maybe a quarter of a foot," Frank said thoughtfully, holding out his hands the correct distance apart, thank you. "You know. Pretty tiny."

"I'll say," Britta said, eyes bulging a little. Thankfully, she was taking these sorts of things into stride amazingly well lately. If anything, it made her life a little bit more like a good drug trip...but without the actual drugs. "Now I get what you meant about the ball pit. That'd be like...swimming in a sea of boulders, or something."

"Yeah, I'll try and... recommend against that kind of strenuous activity," Frank agreed. "Along with most of Fandom's weirdness. But on the plus side, if she wants an adventure, my guess is she'll probably be pretty easily entertained with some couch cushions or a soda bottle or something."

"Hey," Britta said, with sudden inspiration. "Maybe we should introduce her to Susie B. She could help Arietty get around and things like that."

Or, you know, try to eat her. No one in the history of the world ever would claim Britta to be known for her good ideas.

"That could work, yeah!" Frank agreed brightly, because he was way too impressionable to safely be friends with Britta. Seriously. "Unless... you don't think she'd try to bat her around or something, do you?"

"Who, Susie B?" asked Britta, who then went "pfft" and waved a dismissive hand. "Naaaaah. She's a sweetheart. She'll love Arietty."

"Good," Frank said, convinced far too easily. "Then we can definitely arrange a playdate. It'll probably be like horseback riding or something for her. Very exciting."

"Ohhhh," said Britta, gushing a little at the cuteness of it all, "I can't wait to meet her. I'd ask you to point her out if you spotted her, but, I mean, if she's that small, that could be a little difficult."

"Yeah, maybe just keep an eye on the food tables for right now," Frank suggested. "Since my guess is she won't be walking around where she could get squished, you know?"

The deductive skills of Frank Abagnale, ladies and gentlemen.

"That's a good point, too," Britta said with a nod. "Is any of the food small enough for her? I mean, a regular cookie has got to be like the equivalent of a giant giant cookie for us."

"True," Frank noted, nodding thoughtfully. He was starting to feel as though he should be writing this down. "Maybe I can hook her up with some bags of the the little bite-size ones? Those and... mini-carrots, that kind of thing. Somehow I don't see her being able to handle a knife and fork very well."

So... apparently Frank and Britta were becoming Arietty's parents or something. That was new.

"It would have to be the sliced up carrots," Britta decided, "the ones for salads that are like shavings, you know? Ohmygod, but how perfect would those cute little mini cupcakes at the bakery be for her? I bet we can find a lot of mini foods."

"Oh, and donut holes!" Frank added, actualy doing the nerdy thing now and taking out his shiny new phone to get this all down. It would take an insanely long time, given the fact that the touchscreen continued to baffle him, but he'd get there. "And for drinks, she should probably stick to juice boxes and stuff, I guess," he added thoughtfully as he tapped away. "Since anything in a glass, she could probably drown in just as easily as drink it."

Britta nodded. "There's always baby corn, too," she mused. "And quail eggs, if she's into that."

"And caviar maybe," he added. "If she's a fancy tiny person."
