Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of large umbrellas set up for those who didn't enjoy a good pelting of various summer related materials. Because some people are weird like that.

There was also a splendid selection of food and beverages under a canopy to keep from ingesting suntan lotion. See? Your faculty thought of everything. Except how to make the island behave.

That you'll have to deal with.

It was possible that Alec was allergic to mingling.

He walked exactly as much as he needed to in order to locate an empty table from which he could survey the rest of the picnic, then stationed himself there and watched things.

After a while, he got up for long enough to retrieve an iced tea and get bumped into four times. But then he was back.

It really was not all that difficult to find Alec among the crowd what with him being the only person wearing a damn sweater. It also wasn't that hard to sneak up on him considering Jace was known as Jace Wayland, Master of Swiftness in some circles.

Okay, no circles called him that. But he still was pretty fast.

"Aren't you hot?"

It was possible that Alec jumped a little at that. Look, it was a very easily-misinterpreted question, and he hadn't expected to be snuck-up upon, and... oh. It was Jace.

"Hey," he said sheepishly. "I wasn't expecting this kind of weather. Does it always rain objects here?"

"Well not always," he said. "Just enough to remind people that this place is weird."

'Cause it was possible for people to forget, sure.

"That piece of trivia had not escaped me," Alec said dryly. The weirdness was pretty hard to miss, considering he'd nearly been hit in the head by an especially persistent popsicle four times this morning. "Well. So far it certainly isn't boring."

"Oh it does get boring sometimes." Or at least it did to Jace, which probably wasn't surprising. "There's a distinct lack of things to kill here, for example. I was worried I was losing my touch, but now that you're here I have someone to practice my moves on."

Not dirty.

But oh, how Alec wished it was.

"We'll have to schedule some sparring sessions," Alec agreed. "I take it this place has a decent training room?"

Jace nodded. "We're not the only heroic types here. We are, however, the best looking ones."

Alec rolled his eyes. "If you say so." Oh, Alec, you knew it was true.

Another thought occured to him. "You walk around with your runes visible here?"

Jace looked down at his arms, almost like he had forgotten that he was walking around sleeveless. "Oh yeah, people don't care around here. I assume that they assume they're tattoos. Natalie knows what they really are though."

Yeah he had gotten lax about obeying the secrecy part of the Law too. "I covered up for a while there but it was kind of difficult to keep that up with a roommate and living in a tent with three other people. Changing your clothes in a sleeping bag is hard."

Alec wasn't sure what he wanted to facepalm at first. He went with the classic. "You told a mundie what you are?" he asked, suddenly remembering how much more high-maintenance Jace was than Isabelle when it came to mother-henning him. "Are you insane? You know the Law."

"Oh Natalie's not going to be telling anybody anything," Jace said with a dismissive wave of his hand. "I told you, people don't care around here. It's no big deal!"

A pale person wearing a sweater. Well, it wasn't exactly hard to spot someone matching that description in a crowd like they had going on here today. Most people tended to be dressed weather-appropriately, after all.

"You must be Alec."

When things were inevitable, Natalie preferred to at least deal with them on her own terms. Hence the will to initiate things, with an utterly neutral tone and expression. Of course.

Yeah, well, not Alec. He and ratty black sweaters, man. It was the love that would never die.

Unlike all the other pairings in his series, which, you know, had their moments.

"Yes," he said, because, well, he was. "Friend of Jace's?"

The inflection on the word 'friend' was... well, not complimentary.

"Great choice of tone," she replied. Dryly, without much of a shift in her expression. "I'm Natalie."

He'd suspected as much. Mainly because he knew Jace, and his ability to make friends was not exactly the stuff of legend.

"Nice to meet you," he said. "Jace mentioned you."

"I'm sure he did." She might have been hurt if he hadn't. Maybe. In a way no one would ever had found out about. "And I was told I might get a stern talking to or something."

One of Natalie's eyebrows quirked just the tiniest bit, in a 'really? that's how you're going to respons to that?' kind of way.

"No."

Alec, don't pretend you weren't a pissy bitch about Jace making friends with girls. It was undignified.

Natalie's eyebrows returned to their usual level, though she was still giving him an unblinking look that was just a little judgmental.

"I think the way you said the word 'friend' earlier should answer that question."

Natalie looked unimpressed. And was going to ignore that question for the skae of saving herself from having to roll her eyes.

"Jace is the one who said to expect that," she pointed out. "Shouldn't you be asking him?"

"Umbrella?" Petra offered. Sure, the kid looked like he might be kind of antisocial, but that was no reason to deny him popsicle precipitation protection.
