Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of large umbrellas set up for those who didn't enjoy a good pelting of various summer related materials. Because some people are weird like that.

There was also a splendid selection of food and beverages under a canopy to keep from ingesting suntan lotion. See? Your faculty thought of everything. Except how to make the island behave.

It really was not all that difficult to find Alec among the crowd what with him being the only person wearing a damn sweater. It also wasn't that hard to sneak up on him considering Jace was known as Jace Wayland, Master of Swiftness in some circles.

Okay, no circles called him that. But he still was pretty fast.

"Aren't you hot?"

It was possible that Alec jumped a little at that. Look, it was a very easily-misinterpreted question, and he hadn't expected to be snuck-up upon, and... oh. It was Jace.

"Hey," he said sheepishly. "I wasn't expecting this kind of weather. Does it always rain objects here?"

"Well not always," he said. "Just enough to remind people that this place is weird."

'Cause it was possible for people to forget, sure.

"That piece of trivia had not escaped me," Alec said dryly. The weirdness was pretty hard to miss, considering he'd nearly been hit in the head by an especially persistent popsicle four times this morning. "Well. So far it certainly isn't boring."

"Oh it does get boring sometimes." Or at least it did to Jace, which probably wasn't surprising. "There's a distinct lack of things to kill here, for example. I was worried I was losing my touch, but now that you're here I have someone to practice my moves on."

Not dirty.

But oh, how Alec wished it was.

"We'll have to schedule some sparring sessions," Alec agreed. "I take it this place has a decent training room?"

Jace nodded. "We're not the only heroic types here. We are, however, the best looking ones."

Alec rolled his eyes. "If you say so." Oh, Alec, you knew it was true.

Another thought occured to him. "You walk around with your runes visible here?"

Jace looked down at his arms, almost like he had forgotten that he was walking around sleeveless. "Oh yeah, people don't care around here. I assume that they assume they're tattoos. Natalie knows what they really are though."

Yeah he had gotten lax about obeying the secrecy part of the Law too. "I covered up for a while there but it was kind of difficult to keep that up with a roommate and living in a tent with three other people. Changing your clothes in a sleeping bag is hard."

Alec wasn't sure what he wanted to facepalm at first. He went with the classic. "You told a mundie what you are?" he asked, suddenly remembering how much more high-maintenance Jace was than Isabelle when it came to mother-henning him. "Are you insane? You know the Law."

"Oh Natalie's not going to be telling anybody anything," Jace said with a dismissive wave of his hand. "I told you, people don't care around here. It's no big deal!"

"No big deal that we kill demons. In secret. Because the Law tells us to," Alec summarized helpfully. "You know you could get your Marks stripped for that."

"Yeah but I won't because no one is going to say anything," Jace said smugly, knowing he wouldn't be tattled on. "I'd tell you to loosen up but I'm beginning to think that's impossible."

Beginning to think? Really now, Jace.

Still, that appeared to have the effect Jace had been going for. "You really think it's all right?" Alec asked with a sigh.

"Of course it's all right," Jace said, reaching over to give Alec's shoulder an affectionate squeeze. "Would I really give you advice that would get us in trouble with the Clave? Even I'm not that reckless."

"I remain to be convinced that there is a ceiling on how reckless you are," Alec informed him, but the shoulder-squeeze was appreciated. "But it's not like I'm going to run around dressed like you anyway, so as long as you're sure it's fine for you."

"Trust me, it's fine," he said. "You liking it here so far? Scowled at anyone yet?"

"Well, my roommate seems decent so far," Alec offered. "Not that the idea of sharing thrills me. And I've got a big sibling, but I haven't seen her yet ~~because SP is evil~~."

"I can't believe you admitted your roommate seems decent," Jace said, lifting his eyebrows in surprise. "I expected some more metaphorical dragging of your feet."

The roommate must have been good looking then. Only explanation.

...Maybe a little. But he wasn't blond and sassy, so, you know. He lost a few points there.

"I'm approaching this from the angle of 'could be worse,'" Alec pointed out. "Downworlders, et cetera."

"It was entirely possible for you to get a Downworlder as a roommate," Jace said. "I haven't met one yet here but they're all around."

"Yeah, my Sensor's been twitching a bit," Alec confirmed. "Not at my roommate, though. So there's that."

A bright side! A... slightly speciesist bright side.

"Oh there's a bright side," he said. "I don't mind that there's Downworlders here, I just mind how well behaved they are."

Of course he did.

"Of course you do," Alec said. "While I'd prefer they just not be around to cause conflict in the first place."

"You're no fun, have I ever told you that?" Only a couple hundred times.
