Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of large umbrellas set up for those who didn't enjoy a good pelting of various summer related materials. Because some people are weird like that.

There was also a splendid selection of food and beverages under a canopy to keep from ingesting suntan lotion. See? Your faculty thought of everything. Except how to make the island behave.

That you'll have to deal with.

A pale person wearing a sweater. Well, it wasn't exactly hard to spot someone matching that description in a crowd like they had going on here today. Most people tended to be dressed weather-appropriately, after all.

"You must be Alec."

When things were inevitable, Natalie preferred to at least deal with them on her own terms. Hence the will to initiate things, with an utterly neutral tone and expression. Of course.

Yeah, well, not Alec. He and ratty black sweaters, man. It was the love that would never die.

Unlike all the other pairings in his series, which, you know, had their moments.

"Yes," he said, because, well, he was. "Friend of Jace's?"

The inflection on the word 'friend' was... well, not complimentary.

"Great choice of tone," she replied. Dryly, without much of a shift in her expression. "I'm Natalie."

He'd suspected as much. Mainly because he knew Jace, and his ability to make friends was not exactly the stuff of legend.

"Nice to meet you," he said. "Jace mentioned you."

"I'm sure he did." She might have been hurt if he hadn't. Maybe. In a way no one would ever had found out about. "And I was told I might get a stern talking to or something."

"...Have you done something to him?" Oh, Alec. Always the most disturbingly intense of mother-hens.

One of Natalie's eyebrows quirked just the tiniest bit, in a 'really? that's how you're going to respons to that?' kind of way.

"No."

"Then why would you expect that?"

Alec, don't pretend you weren't a pissy bitch about Jace making friends with girls. It was undignified.

Natalie's eyebrows returned to their usual level, though she was still giving him an unblinking look that was just a little judgmental.

"I think the way you said the word 'friend' earlier should answer that question."

Alec squared his jaw. "By which you mean...?"

Natalie looked unimpressed. And was going to ignore that question for the skae of saving herself from having to roll her eyes.

"Jace is the one who said to expect that," she pointed out. "Shouldn't you be asking him?"

"I don't think that's necessary," Alec said. With, yes, an award-winning scowl.

He and Natalie might not end up being good friends.

"So how do you two know each other?" Because he was preparing to judge her.

"He's my little brother."

And yeah, he could scowl all he wanted. She wasn't going to care about it.

"School assigned, naturally."

"Uh-huh." That term was pretty unfortunate. Considering that, you know, Alec was pretty big on his position as Jace's actual older brother.

Adopted, naturally. That was important.

"I'm sure he's been a handful."

Oh, Natalie had known that when she'd decided to word it that way. Just because she was scowl-proof didn't mean she couldn't prod at people's buttons.

She shrugged a shoulder. "We get along."

"Uh-huh." This was going very badly. "I've never known him to be especially fond of mundanes before."

Natalie allowed herself an eyeroll. "Calling me that is tacky."

"It was more a general observation," Alec said. "Given that that is the accepted vernacular."

"Not necessarily in the culture you're in now," she pointed out. "But you'll learn."
