Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Well.

It was raining popsicles and suntan lotion today. Because Fandom liked to make the newbies cry sometimes. Yes, the island had a sense of humor about these things.

We've all learned to accept that and move on with our lives. Well, all of us except for Britta. But she's the worst.

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

Jaime Lannister had been well on his way to Riverrun when he had, somehow, managed to lose the entire column of men he'd been riding with. He had even managed to lose his squire.

Well. He'd never thought this whole 'losing' thing would spiral quite so out of control after he lost his hand as well.

Ah ha.

At least he had a sense of humor about him as he eyed the strange crowd gathered there. And then he was struck in the head by a sweetened chunk of ice. His day was just getting better and better.

"Jaime Lannister?" Ender inquired politely.

Jaime glanced over at the boy, carefully wiping sickly sweet blue off his cheek as he did. "I'm afraid you have me at a disadvantage," he said with an easy smile.

He wore the white cloak of the Kingsguard and the carefully crafted gold lion of Lannister upon his chest. It was not a difficult thing to guess at his identity.

That, and there was only a limited supply of new teachers around, and some of the male ones were wearing nametags already.

"Andrew Wiggin," Ender offered easily. "I believe the school has assigned me to help you adjust to the teaching life."

That would be going by the less than certain knowledge that he was in a land where The Kingslayer was not well known. Even by the small folks.

"Teaching? I'm no maester, Andrew," he replied. He was, however, starting to wonder what sort of dream this was. The heat of summer, the wrongness of the 'snow', and now this? "I can assure you of that. I would drive them to tears in Oldtown."

He would have thought a dream this odd would have at least involved Cersei. Or perhaps the Maid of Tarth.

"Ah," Ender said, making some mental logic leaps about Jamie's presence here. "I take it you didn't intend to come here."

He much preferred the dreams where he was whole again...

"And just where is here?" he asked, ignoring the phantom twitch of fingers that were no longer there. That threatened to prove this was less than the mad dream he took it for. Too much wine, perhaps.

"Fandom Island," Ender said with a wry, if sympathetic, little smile. "Think of it as a beacon, drawing in the wayward, the lost, and the rather easily inconvenienced. Many wind up here by accident."

"An island," he said with amusement. "How far I must have travelled then. I hadn't known my horses capable of walking on water."

Definitely a dream. The heat of an almost forgotten summer baked him with in his armor, like the fever in Harrenhal had. He could almost see that wench's ugly face contorted up in confusion at his ramblings.

Tyrion knew about the picnic, but -- with no "buddy" for the term and no other particular reason to be timely -- he didn't get to the park until it was well underway.

He'd gotten hit by a glob of lotion as he passed into the park, and the mess and scent of it were quite preoccupying until he spotted a flash of white and gold. And then he was crossing the grass as fast as his stunted legs would carry him.

"Jaime?"

It was one thing to know the island could play tricks. Another when it was your brother.

Jaime may not have been around terribly much lately due to the war, but he'd known his brother his entire life. And very few men looked as such.

"...Tyrion."

Phantom fingers twitched again.

[identity profile] halfman-lion.livejournal.com 2012-06-30 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, we know each other's names, that's a start. But why --"

His question was cut off when he took a fuller look at the knight.

"Rather careless," he said, in a thick voice, "to lose a hand, brother."

"You know me too well, brother." A lesser man might have dropped down to his knees at the madness of all this. A lesser man might have also given into the urge to put their arms around their very much whole, very much sane sibling.

But Jaime Lannister was not like lesser men.

Time did indeed play the cruelest of tricks on them all.

"Next you know, I will have gotten lost and end on an island where winter has no grip."

Tyrion didn't know there was a world where he was less than whole, less than sane. The urge to put his arms around his brother, though, was likely about the same.

"I could try to convince you this is their winter," he offered. His eyes were still full of questions; he wasn't even sure where to start. But talking about the weather seemed unlikely to produce anything worth knowing. "Is that how you ended here? You got lost?"

Weather was an excellent topic. Since kinslaying was completely out of the question.

"If I'd planned to come, I would have brought you a gift. Perhaps one of those books you love so dearly."

"Ah, but I've more books here than anyone could read in a lifetime," Tyrion said lightly -- or as lightly as he could manage, as his hands kept skittering to the golden hand no matetr how hard he tried for them not to. "Not that I'm losing time making an attempt at it. Still, I thank you for the thought. If I'd known you were coming I would have had some iced wine ready."

Jaime smiled at that, holding up the hand for inspection if his brother was so damned curious. "Time," he said. "Changes us all. You're younger."

Blissfully unaware she'd receive karmic payback by the next post, Cara couldn't help snickering at the man in the pretty white cloak getting pelted with coloured ice. Loudly.

His pretty, while cloak was... only mildly stained by the ice.

"Yes, I suppose it is quite funny," Jaime called, not above the occasional jape at himself. "I don't suppose you're a washerwoman."
wrongkindofsith: (At least one of us has a clue)

"Do I look like one?" Cara asked, fairly confident of the answer.

Unless of course washerwomen wore red leather wherever he came from, you never knew.

Perhaps the sort that resided in Littlefinger's brothels? Oh, or in Braavos! He'd never been to Braavos, mind.

"I'm in a strange land as it is. Perhaps things truly have changed when it comes to them."

She looked, he thought, more like a sellsword. Though one that would not make it long without being set upon by her fellows when their blood was up. It made his jaw clench for a moment at the memory of Pia.

"This place doesn't even have washerwomen." At least not in the sense either of them meant. "They have machines for it instead."

People attempting to set upon Cara when their blood was up tended to result in them getting very, very dead, very, very quickly. The cold, calculated betrayals had been somewhat more effective, but in the long run...well, she was standing there talking to him.

If Jaime knew anything about Mord'Sith in general and Cara in particular, not really.

"Yes, whatever use those are." Look, unlike some people she wasn't a technology geek. Plus you needed people to call, and who where capable of picking up. She didn't exactly have a lot of those.

He'd be more apt to associate her with the Faceless Men than a Mord'Sith, really.

"Ser Jaime Lannister of the Kingsguard," he said, bowing his head just enough to be respectful. He had enough pride to keep it from going further than that.
