Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Well.

It was raining popsicles and suntan lotion today. Because Fandom liked to make the newbies cry sometimes. Yes, the island had a sense of humor about these things.

We've all learned to accept that and move on with our lives. Well, all of us except for Britta. But she's the worst.

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

Weather was an excellent topic. Since kinslaying was completely out of the question.

"If I'd planned to come, I would have brought you a gift. Perhaps one of those books you love so dearly."

"Ah, but I've more books here than anyone could read in a lifetime," Tyrion said lightly -- or as lightly as he could manage, as his hands kept skittering to the golden hand no matetr how hard he tried for them not to. "Not that I'm losing time making an attempt at it. Still, I thank you for the thought. If I'd known you were coming I would have had some iced wine ready."

Jaime smiled at that, holding up the hand for inspection if his brother was so damned curious. "Time," he said. "Changes us all. You're younger."

"I always will be compared to you," Tyrion said, but he knew what Jaime meant. "Has Robert died for you at home? Someone told me that was coming, not that it was precisely a surprise to hear."

By "someone" he meant "Daenerys Targaryen," but she was gone from the island -- for good, as far as he knew -- and that she'd been about at all could wait for a bit later in the conversation.

"Robert--" He was a few kings behind, then. That was... good. "Who told you?"

Perhaps he couldn't hold off as long as all that, then.

"Daenerys Targeryen," Tyrion said. "Though I think she's gone home now. She was in my class for a bit, believe it or not."

"Targeryen." There was just going to be a bit of staring now. "I think that iced wine would do wonders right now."

"For both of us," Tyrion said, and ran a hand back through his hair as he tried to think. "Do you have a place to stay? Are you staying?"

"I have been informed that I have a class to teach," Jaime replied wryly. "I--you have lodgings?"

"I have an apartment," Tyrion nodded. "It's small, but so am I. You ... likely won't bang your head on the ceiling too often. You're welcome as long as you wish, of course."

A pause. "What are they having you teach?"

Forgive Tyrion if he didn't think it the most likely choice of occupation.

He smiled at that, warmer than he could remember.

"I could manage to teach a few squires," Jaime replied. "Gods know they'll be needed to care for the horses."

That got a smile in return out of Tyrion. "Ah. I've been to the stables a bit -- they could use a few good hands. My class this session is on the technology in this world."

"Ah, yes. The lad--Andrew mentioned you would explain to me how to use his 'telephone number' should I need help."

Tyrion looked mildly surprised -- he wasn't certain he knew an Andrew -- but nodded as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a fully tricked-out smartphone.

What was the point of being a Lannister if you didn't have nice things?

"Ah. Yes. The telephone bit that lets you talk to people is a convenience, nothing more, but their 'internet' -- it's like every library I've ever known, inside this ... tablet. I'll get one for you as soon as we leave the picnic."

"No wonder you seem so content here," Jaime replied dryly. "I hadn't seen a brothel on my way here, so it had to be something else."

Tyrion could have laughed; the Jaime who'd visited him the year before had made almost the same observation. Perhaps, hand or none, the time between them had not changed his brother so much.

"There isn't one," he said dryly. "I've been quite chaste. I'm thinking of becoming a knight, or at least taking the black."

No, he wasn't.

"Stand on that frozen wall all day? You'll end up more sour than Stannis Baratheon."

"Perhaps I should reconsider the plan," Tyrion said, pulling a face. "In all seriousness, this is a good place, just odd. You ought to find things to like about it."

"I--I would very much like that, brother." Perhaps this was some form of penance for his deeds.

Tyrion smiled, but it didn't entirely reach his eyes. He could tell there was something under the surface, but he wasn't sure he wanted to plumb it too deeply. There is a reason they say ignorance is bliss.

Not that Tyrion ever was able to content himself for long with that line of thinking, but it would hold back the questions for a bit.

"If there's anything more you need now," he said, "please let me know."

Jaime gave him a sad, serious look that might have been out of place on him when he was younger. He wanted his brother and sister and father. He wanted things how they had been before this damned war had started.

He wanted... to be himself apart from Cersei and apart from the name Lannister.

"Nothing more than this."

And he said it with all honesty.
