Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Well.

It was raining popsicles and suntan lotion today. Because Fandom liked to make the newbies cry sometimes. Yes, the island had a sense of humor about these things.

We've all learned to accept that and move on with our lives. Well, all of us except for Britta. But she's the worst.

"Yes, that's all," Ender replied. He regarded Jaime thoughtfully.

"Is that surprising?"

"My brother was wounded in battle. The scars are hard to miss."

Did that mean someone simply had not heart about the Battle on the Blackwater? Or something that felt like a horse kicking him in the chest.

"I don't remember him being particularly scarred, but time plays tricks with us here," Ender volunteered. "I ran into my own older brother here-- who's at present younger than me."

He glanced towards the crowd. "Though if it'll settle you more, you should find your brother before I continue talking at you about things you're not yet inclined to believe."

"Time plays the cruelest tricks on us all," he said lightly, following Ender's gaze.

"You haven't a clue who I am beyond my name, do you?"

"Not in the slightest," Ender said. "Going by your attitude, you're important, wherever you are from. But most of us are."

"I have a reputation," he corrected dryly.

Before everything he might have agreed with that assessment, though.

"It's the same thing," Ender said, "Just from a different perspective."

He'd have a reputation for a while. It would just... change over time.

Jaime watched him for a moment, assessment of the boy shifting just a bit. "I think I liked it better when I thought this was a fever dream."

"Welcome to Fandom," Ender replied, mouth tugging up a little. "It'll hardly be the only time you'll think that."

"I hope there is wine here at least." And less ice pelting him. "Where I left, winter was well on it's way. I was expecting snow, not sweetened ice."

"It's summer here," Ender offered. "The sweetened ice is our way of cooling down - though it's usually not falling out of the sky. That's purely the island at work."

Jaime nodded at that, sincerely hoping that would be the case. "I will keep that in mind, Andrew. You wouldn't happen to know where I could stable my horses, would you? I didn't see an inn on my way here."

"There should be a stable near the castle itself," Ender said, pointing in that general direction. "We don't have much in the way of caretakers, however. Though there's also the Gig downtown, I believe."

He moved his right arm slightly at that. "The Gig it is then."

Ender nodded. He smiled a little. "Though you should also try to educate yourself in the local technologies," he offered. "We might be more advanced than you're used to. But I have a feeling your brother might be better equipped to explain the differences to you. Either way..."

He took a note from his pocket and scribbled something down on it.

"What is that?"

"My phone number," Ender said, offering him the note. "We have a brand of communications device that... lets you contact the person whose numbers you've pressed."

He pulled his own phone out and held it up for inspection. "It might be useful to learn how they work."

After a moment of staring to check if this was another attempt at a joke, Jaime took the scrap of paper to tuck away withing the breast plate of his armor. "Well, it's certainly smaller than a raven."

"Just a touch more reliable, too," Ender said. "You can't shoot one down, for one."

Jaime hummed pleasantly, looking over the strange, shiny curves and angles of the device. "I'm certain I'll enjoy having one."

And learning to text leftie.

"If you need help getting one, I'm happy to oblige."

Anything to help out a handless dude in need.

"Thank you, Andrew." And all without knowing a thing about him. How... actually nice. "A funny thing that you don't know my family and still offer."

Ender shrugged. "I try to be kind when given the chance," he said, "and considering the confusion many go through when they wind up here, I feel it's as good a chance as any."
