Library, Sunday 05/06

After making sure everything in the library was in its rightful place, Raven settled behind the desk to go over what she was planning to take with her when she joined Karla in Kaeleer. She thought she could feel a certain malevolence coming from the section containing books on flowers for some reason, but dismissed it as her imagination when no roses or gerbera attacked.

The problem with having a new roommate (and no possessions of her own) meant that Thelma Bates didn't have anything to read. She couldn't just take and read Karolina's things, that would have been rude.

So Thelma came to the library that Sunday. And after arriving and seeing the pretty dark-haired girl behind the desk, she couldn't help but grin and let out a "Well hello there," which she thought was mainly to herself.

With her demon blood, Raven could see Thelma just fine and wasn't aware yet that she was anything but a living girl. "Hello," she said with a smile. "Welcome to the library. May I help you?"

"Oh. Oh!" Thelma said in a moment of surprise. "Sorry, I should've expected. Hi. I suppose you can, actually. I'm rather new and hoping to avoid wandering into the sections with all the boring books."

She recovered from her surprise and gave Raven a smile.

Raven picked up on her surprise and was puzzled by it. "You are a new student who arrived yesterday then?" she said. "I hope you are enjoying Fandom so far. I am Raven, and it is very nice to meet you. What type of books do you consider boring?"

"Between you and me," Thelma said, smiling, "I tend to go for the books that are a little more spicy. Though the less blokes in them the better, if you get my meaning. But right now, I think I could do more with learning about the library worker."

The moment Thelma said "spicy," Raven started thinking "cookbooks," and when she got to "less blokes," her thoughts turned to Cat Cora. Which was correct in a way, which she realized by the time Thelma said "the library worker."

She blushed and giggled a little. "What do you wish to know?" she said. "But first you must tell me your name."

"Thelma Bates," she introduced, her expression still quite pleasant. "Fresh off the boat, as it were. Though I don't think people still take boat trips to America, it would take an awful long time. Fresh off the plane and subsequent bus ride doesn't have the same ring, though."

Sorry Raven, Thelma tended to ramble.

"Where are you from?" Raven asked. "Is it England?" She was certainly familiar with English accents, though Thelma's was not entirely the same as Jono's.

"That's it," Thelma said with a nod. She paused momentarily then asked "You're not a witch, are you? Fairy? Something like that?"

"Something like that," Raven said, not lying, but not exactly willing to bust out "I am a demon" so soon after meeting someone. She didn't hide it anymore, but she didn't go out of her way to tell someone immediately unless there was specific need or if she was asked point blank, in which case she wouldn't lie.

"I am an empath and a healer," she said. "But some of my best friends are witches, and one is even a fairy as well."

"I just ask, since the other option was you were dead like me," Thelma said. "Not that I particularly wanted you to be or anything, just like to get sorted out why people can see me, when they can. Why their third eye is open and all that."

She had been dead, but she got better!

"My gifts make me attuned to the spirit world," Raven said, nodding. And her demon blood as well. "But I am very sorry for your passing." She caught herself before she said she hoped it was peaceful and painless, because those who came back as ghosts rarely had quiet deaths.

"What brings you to Fandom now?" she asked. "I think you will find that there are many who may see you here, which I hope will be welcomed to you. Many of the students and teachers are quite special."

"Oh, just finishing up school," Thelma said. "I've decided to remain on this mortal coil as long as possible. Not quite ready for the pearly gates. And so, I suppose I need to finish school first, and this place came with a very heavenly recommendation."

She even laughed at her own awful joke.

"Then I am very glad you have this opportunity," Raven said. "Have you been warned of Fandom's...whimsies?"

At least gremlins shouldn't be able to bite a ghost, right?

"The gremlins and zombies, yes," Thelma said. "I got to hear about them while my big sibling talked at a notebook yesterday. So far, it seems a more... light-hearted version of my old school. Before it blew up."

"Your old school is as...interesting as this one?" Raven said, a little surprised by that. Even students from more fantastic worlds still found some of Fandom's whimsy surprising.

"Who is your big silbing?" she asked. "He or she cannot see you?"

"One of the teachers turned out to secretly be a fallen angel, the whole End of Days started, a whole big mess," Thelma said, fairly casually for hugely awful events. "And as for my big sibling, well, his name is Richie Ryan, and he seems... well, as smart as you can expect from most men."

She did seem casual, but at the mention of ending the world, Raven was definitely reluctant to bring up being a demon. She'd find a way to mention it another time.

"I do not know Richie," she said. "But I would be happy to act as a translator for you if the need should arise. Have you been assigned a roommate? Are you able to be seen by her or him?"

"Didn't luck out there, either," Thelma admitted. "Karolina seems really sweet, but I think she's a little weirded out by having a ghost for a roommate. She was worried I was just an invisible person playing a prank."

"I hope she will become more accustomed to it," Raven said. "I know it is very hard for some to adjust to Fandom, even if they do not come from worlds with magic or other such things. But eventually they do."

"Me too," Thelma said. "I mean, technically I don't need a room since I don't sleep and don't really own any things. But I like having a place to go, and I want her to be comfortable there too."

"If things do not work out, you are welcomed to come to my room," Raven offered. "But I am certain with time she will become more comfortable. Is she a new student as well? I am unfamiliar with her name."

"I think she must be," Thelma said. "I wouldn't know for sure. I mean, she was already expecting people to be invisible after all. So either she comes from an old horror movie or who knows, really. I think I'm learning not to shut down most possibilities here."

"Fandom can be very welcoming once you get used to some of its quirks," Raven said. "It was very difficult for me at first, for I had be raised to be without emotions, and to suddenly be surrounded by so many feelings was very intense. But eventually I settled in, and now I dread leaving at the end of the summer."

"Oh, shucks, you're leaving?" Thelma said, focusing on that part for now. "And here I was, hoping we could get to be great friends. That's the first tragic thing I've heard since I'd arrived."
