Today a large poster was displayed at the front of the classroom. "I would just like to start by saying I had nothing to do with the creation of this poster," Steve said, looking faintly embarrassed about it. "But it has an important message. You can't always tell by looking at someone whether they have a venereal disease or not. They may not even know it. That's why protection is so important, and why abstinence is the only really effective way of preventing the spread of disease. Today we're going to have a little exercise to demonstrate this.

"You have the rest of the class period free to mingle and eat these cookies I brought. Half of you will receive a packet of chocolate chip cookies, and half of you will receive a packet of bacon maple cookies. If you want to trade, or try one of the other cookies, well, then you'll have to talk to each other, won't you? There is only one requirement: you must shake hands with anyone you talk to. And there is a catch. One of you is--hypothetically, of course--carrying a disease, which is transferred by the shaking of hands. I will tell you who at the end of the period. But don't worry about that for now. Chat. Enjoy the cookies."

"I'm not particularly a big fan of bacon cookies," Mercy admitted. "But you're welcome to my chocolate chip ones if you'd like."

"Generous of you," Kenzi said, sneaking one and nibbling quickly. "And you don't know what you're missing here. Bacon! In snack form!"

"I'll pass," Mercy said, not convinced. "But I think we're supposed to shake hands and hope neither of us is diseased."

"We could do that," Kenzi agreed. "But did you know lesbians have the lowest level of STIs? I think we could claim we're safe."

Trust Kenzi to know that.

"Except I'm not a lesbian," Mercy pointed out. "So..."

"You've already exchanged a handshake with a guy?" Kenzi gave her a sad look. "Mercy, men have cooties."

Now she was just being silly.

Mercy laughed. "Not today and not, you know, sex or anything, but... I'm not worried about cooties."

"Well, apparently we should be. Yeesh." Kenzi made a face at the poster. "There should be a matching one about how Casanovas and party-boys are pools of infection waiting to happen." She grinned at Mercy, and stuck out her hand. "If you're willing to risk it..."

Mercy laughed and shook Kenzi's hand. "Well, we may both be dead in a few years, but at least you'll have some chocolate chip cookies."

"Yes, but as ways to go, sex infection is better than meteor rock monster infection," Kenzi said brightly, returning to the cookies. "This island gives you perspective, you know?"

"I'm not so sure," Mercy said with a grin. "I mean, most of the island stuff goes away after a day or so. STD's aren't as easy to get rid of."

"What about a STD you get on a weird day?"

She still wondered about that, off and on.

"Ew..." Mercy couldn't help thinking about her time in the hot tub with Tony during that weekend. Not that they'd even kissed, but if the thing hadn't gone to black. "I never thought about that before."

"Not just me wondering!" Kenzi punched the air. "...which is why I advocate being prepared and stopping by 'Dite's for supplies. Even if you're not planning on anything."

Mercy's eyes went wide. "Oh no, I don't think that's necessary. I mean, if something weird happened and I wasn't myself, I - I mean, I might already be prepared or I might be the kind who doesn't prepare and then all my embarrassment would be for nothing."

Kenzi gave Mercy a tolerant look. "Or, you could stop by on a Friday, and I'll keep what you buy on the d-l? 'Cause dude, remember, it's every person that person's been with." And in Seifer's case, that was a lot of people.

"I'm not - you know - planning to be with anybody," Mercy said, blushing. "Really not."

Kenzi grinned. "We're here for you when you are, though. I mean, we're not talking never -ever right? You haven't taken a vow of celibacy?"

Mercy shrugged a little uncomfortably. "Not never," she admitted. "Probably. But no, no vow of celibacy or anything."
