The Club Fair, Gym, Friday Afternoon

For once, Jeremy actually came into the gym on purpose when the club fair was being set up. There was at least one club he knew he wanted to sign up for, after all.

So, he grabbed himself a copy of the club schedule, and set out to explore his options.

[OCD up!]

Dave settled in at the Fandom High Times booth with a stack of old newspapers (http://fhightimes.livejournal.com/) from years gone by.

He might have been staring at the name of the paper now and then, muttering to himself, "It has to be a reference to the magazine." Not that kind of High Times, folks.

[OOC: Slow throughout the day!]

At some point Annie wandered over mostly to see what Dave was doing, but when she spotted the newspapers that became sort of self-explanatory. "I didn't know we had one of these," she said, looking at the stack.

"We haven't had one since last year, apparently," Dave said. "But I figure that's long enough to go without a student newspaper."

"So you're starting it up again? Cool," she smiled. "What do you need people to do for it?"

"Pretty much anything I can convince people to do, really," Dave said. "I mean, I'd like to have some interviews with people around the school and town. Maybe some articles on life in Fandom. But I won't say no if people want to do horoscopes of Sudoku or something.

"Maybe some investigative reporting?"

Oh dear god.

"Absolutely, if that's interesting to someone," Dave said. "This is going to be a wild guess, but would that be something you find interesting?"

"Maybe," she said, trying to play it cool. "If you want the seedy underbelly of this place exposed, I think I'm your girl."

Oh, god.

"Actually, that would be great," Dave said.

Sam was bored, and as such, wandering through the club fair.

She had no intention of joining any -- clubs were way too much like work -- but then she spotted the newspapers.

"These things have horrorscopes?"

Shut up, that was so what they were called.

"Yep," Dave said. "They're probably out of date, but I don't think they were written too seriously in the first place, so it's not like you'd be missing out on much. Feel free to flip through one of the back issues."
hurtingzeebo: (I'm confused)

And now she was supposed to do work just for asking questions!

"Yeah . . . but I don't care that much. I just wanna write funny horrorscopes."

"Oh, in that case, welcome to the newspaper staff," Dave said. "But just to check, are you going to keep calling them 'horrorscopes?'"

Dave didn't mind. He knew enough about Sam to know that the name could actually be accurate. He just wanted to know if he should change the logo.

"What else would I call them?" Sam said, continuing to not make it obvious whether or not she knew they were supposed to be called "horoscopes".

"That's kind of what I expected," Dave said. "Not a problem. I'm sure you'll make them great."

"Darn tootin'," Sam agreed.

She was already thinking of horrors to put in them.

"You should totally offer food next time you do this."

"Actually, that's not a bad idea," Dave said. "It's my first time running a booth, so I wasn't sure what all would draw people in."

Lucrezia was making her way through the gym, her skirts swishing, when she spotted a table she had not observed before. Was this organization new, or had she merely failed to notice it the previous time?

"What is it that you do here?" she asked, curiosity piqued.

"Well, the ultimate goal is to provide news and insight that you can't get from the radio broadcasts," Dave said. "But it'll probably end up being a bunch of people writing whatever kind of insanity they can to meet a weekly deadline."

Dave was an honest newsman.

[identity profile] holy-daughter.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
"What sort of insanity?" Lucrezia asked. "I'm afraid I don't know much about this island. I only arrived last autumn myself."

"Well, it looks like somebody used to do conversational translations for a language I've never heard of, and that was a weekly column somehow," Dave said. "So I think the traditional standard is literally whatever comes to mind."

"And I wouldn't be concerned about being too new. After all, I just came in last summer and I'm going to be running this thing."

[identity profile] holy-daughter.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Are you seeking writers?" Lucrezia asked, lightly, running her fingers along the edge of the table. "I speak several languages, but I could not imagine writing a column about them. I could write one about my time in a nunnery, but I assure you, that was too dull to cover more than a week or two."

Minus certain complicating factors that she was not going to mention, such as her being with child at the time.

"I'm looking for anyone who wants to write. If they're actual writers, that's a bonus," Dave joked. Kind of. "And that could be pretty interesting. But after the nunnery, I think the important thing would be figuring out what about Fandom interests you enough to get you to write about it. Maybe something other students can relate to."

"If you think you might be able to come up with something along those lines, I'd be happy to have you on the team."

"I could do my best," Lucrezia offered. "Perhaps the other staff members might have their own suggestions as well. Should I fail, you will be no worse off than when you began."
