Library is Open, Wednesday 2/1

Zero opens the Library and heads back into the stacks, returning a few minutes later with that which she sought: The Amethyst Flower, the sequel to The Jade Flower. Today, there will be silly romance novels, and it will be good.

Lunch

The Library is closed so that the library aides may eat their lunch in peace. Zero munches a peanut butter sandwich while reading.

Chapter 16. The evil sheikh threatens to kill Jade Flower and the Dread Pirate Frykin unless Ammy is given over to him. Zero wonders why Jade hasn't killed this guy yet. Running Wolf MacGregor challenges him to a duel.

Parker brought her lunch, but was distracted by a phone call (http://mparker17.livejournal.com/2413.html?thread=577389#t577389) for a while. Now she's plotting Callisto's death.

In the mean time, she was considering her Medieval History reading, and comparing it to the amusement factor of Amethyst Flower. The romance novel was winning.

"Oh, somebody just kill the bastard already!" Zero yells at her book.

"Which bastard is this? You know the bad guy doesn't die until the next-to-the-last chapter in these things." Parker tilted her head. "I think it's so the entire last chapter can be devoted to improbable sex."

"The sheikh who kidnapped her parents! Jade alone has had about four opportunities to do it, and now Ammy's going to let the stupid Scottish Apache boy fight him for her hand. Why doesn't she just ninja-assassinate him or whatever??"

"Maybe she wants him to prove he has the chops?" Parker wondered. "And that way, she can seduce the sheikh without him getting stupid, if MacGregor can't beat him in a fight." She paused. "No, still stupid. You're right, it has to be a send-up. I'd kick any guy's ass who tried to fight someone for me."

"Ditto. Ammy's holding off all the sheikh's men at once now. Poor bastards."

"If nothing else, this book is an excellent demonstration of that. It's a lesson everyone should know."

Parker snorted. "As someone who has stolen pie from a ninja and lived by the skin of her teeth, it should be put up on billboards. I still wonder why Jaye's alive." Pausing, she said, "Wait. A sheikh in the Caribbean?"

"From his sheikhdom in the deserts, he heard tales of the beauty of the Amethyst Flower and knew he must have her for his own," Zero recites from the back of the book.

"That is one bored sheikh. Doesn't he have a country to run? Tribesmen to thwart? This is why some people shouldn't be allowed to get rich or have nice things. They're never happy with them. Always have to go running off, collecting women."

"Could be better, but the adventures of bad romance novel heroines are lightening it up." Parker smirked. "So, Russian? Where do you want us to start?"

Parker grinned. "Total immersion, if you can manage it? Vocabulary plus the context? That's how I learned Japanese and Italian." She cocked her head. "Difficult to prove we're going homework that way, though. Maybe a word list, with phrases I need to pronounce and write?" Since she never learned over the internet either. :>

"It works for me: 'абсорбциа, работает для меня.'" Parker repeated, smiling. "Got it. It's very different from the other languages I know, I'm aware of that. But it's too important in the ways I'll need it later to skip."

Parker repeated those phrases, stumbling over 'see you later', and then grumbling. "Damnit. Okay,Смвас более поздно. Got it. I think. Where did you learn Russian, by the way?"

Parker's face sobered a bit, and then she offered, a little awkwardly, "Mine died when I was ten. She was a ballerina, before she got married." She shook her head. "Okay, so, Здравствулте, kак вы?" She let out a breath. "Swear I'm going to sprain my tongue."
