Advanced Criminal Justice, Class #6, Period 1, 01.26.06

[OOC: I will be busy at the office all morning and probably be working against a deadline in the afternoon. Fun stuff. No clue how much I'll be able to reply udirng the day so Rory has permission to go crazy with the responses if she wants. Now ready for the usual scattered replies. Class Info Post.]

The Tick was behind his desk again, looking rather more rested. Lockheed was back on his usual spot on the bookshelf. And the mun was rushing this class liek whoa!

"Hello, class! A quick announcement before we get started today. There will be a quiz next Thursday. It won't be much to worry about and it won't be heavy on details from the class thus far. It will just check your ability to reason things out in the name of Justice!"

"Today we will be looking at the flip-side of Tuesday's topic. Where there are heroes fighting for Justice, there must be villains working against it."

"Today I would like you to tell me about a villain or a villainous group from back home. If you will, please discuss with the class what he, she, or it did to get labeled as so darn villainous and whether or not they have been brought to Justice yet!"

"And if the discussion goes well today, I may even share a story about one of my arch-fiends when the mun gets home from work so be sure to check back in at the end of class. It'll be the story of a guy with a chair for a head. Come on, you know you want to hear about him!"

"Please discuss!"

"Bob Destepello," Marty practically spat out with all traces of bitterness well apparent. "Complete jackass and school bully. Destined to become a coke-snortin'-poetry-writing-BMW-Car Salesman. I mean selling Beemers? In Detroit? That's sacrilege!"

When Angel comes into class he looks not only tired but hurt. There's red claw marks on his cheek, and he moves gingerly as he sits, almost as though he's got a bone or two broken.

He listens to the discussion question.

"Official organization or just a group of people as a concept? Because if it's the latter then vamps and demons handle that just fine. Former, I'd probably have to go with Darla's little culty friends."

"Doesn't have to be a group. It can be just a villain," Marty pointed out helpfully.

The fact that he's looking at Angel and then Callisto and then back at Angel again doesn't mean he's making up some wild conspiracy theory about how Angel got the crap beaten out of him.

Callisto frowned and flicked a note onto Angel's desk.

What happened?

Cameron growls something underneath his breath that probably isn't too friendly.

Hearing that name, Aeryn entertains the thought of showing up at Darla's house in the daytime and finding out out what pulse rifles will do to vampires, then go ahead and take care of Crazy Squid Lady while she's at it.

There is quite possibly a snarl from Parker's corner of the room, but she's got a blank expression on her face the next time anyone looks over there. Still. Not a happy sound.

"Xena." Callisto stated flatly. "Also called the Warrior Princess, or the Destroyer of Nations. Born in Amphipolis. Took up the sword about ten winters ago. Started out as a petty warlord and pirate. Got herself crucified by the Romans. Afterwards set her sights higher and cut a swath through Chin, and other lands to the North and East. Came back to Greece and the then the fun really started. Burned towns and villages all over Sparta, Thrace, Crete, even visted Troy. Has not been brought to Justice."

Callisto frowned and looked down at her hand. Funny, when did her pen break?

Veronica slides into her seat a few minutes late. Her eyes are puffy and she most definitely is not smiling.

And then she blanches at the discussion topic. She isn't sure if she wants to participate today.

"There's a...gang, back home, called the...Snakes. They're considered villains because they are involved with slavery--as the owners, not the slaves, obviously. The slaves are generally good people who don't know anything but oppression from this gang."

Sam grimaced, speaking a bit slowly as she tried to figure out how to phrase this. "They also operate very much like a cult, in that once you're a member, you're pretty much brainwashed to believe what the...gang leader tells you, without argument or logic. And, in most cases, you don't get out until you're dead."

With Vala getting attacked so fresh in mind, Cameron is really beyond thinking of anything else. "Darla," he says simply and looks very much like he's thinking of doing something really stupid.

Aeryn might be just a little testy today. She's just going to sit over here and keep her mouth shut for a while. And maybe stab at her desk with her pen. Repeatedly.

"Before I answer this question, I have uh. An announcement to make." Parker's voice is utterly flat as she stands up.

"I love Principal Smith." She paused. "Right." She sat down, looking llike she wanted to kill someone.

"Evildoers from home." Parker muttered, then said, "Kyle. Creepy kid like Marty's bully. He tried to break my wrist once when all I was doing was trying to help him pick up some stuff he'd dropped. I think he set a fire at a... complex, a couple years later. He disappeared and no one's seen him since."

"Napoleon," says Archie simply, "for being such a damned megalomanical tyrant. Granted, there are some who would say that he brought many improvements to France as well, but I think some of his methods were certainly questionable."

Bridge frowns. He has to pick just *one*? There have been a lot of villains in his world's history, after all.

"Okay, there's Lothor. He was an evil Space Ninja... or actually, I think he might have been *from* Earth but was banished to space for being evil and was maybe a little bitter about that. So anyway, he and his two nieces came to Earth, and like, kidnapped all the good ninjas. And then tried to conquer Earth. But luckily there were still a few ninjas left, and these ninjas were also Power Rangers, so they pushed him in to the Abyss of Evil and got rid of him. And then his nieces became good ninjas."

"The Sith," Anakin said quietly. "The the ancient enemy of the Jedi. They believe in everything we stand against--using the Force for personal gain, remaking the galaxy to serve their own ends." Anakin began to add in a part about the Dark Side, but figured that would lead to more questions, and explaining the Dark Side of the Force wasn't something he wanted to attempt this early in the morning. If he was completely honest, he'd prefer to never talk about the Dark Side ever.

"We thought they had been eradicated from the galaxy millennia ago but it turns out they'd just been hiding. They're back now. There's only two of them." Anakin stared at the wall. "And we have no idea who they are or what they're planning."

One villain's name leaped to mind, but the Professor had specified "back home".

... which brought to mind another name, but not one Logan cared to discuss in class.

Well, Weevil's gang always made for good villains. "There's a bike club back home. Lots of trouble. Car theft, credit card fraud, assult, vandalism. Some of them got caught, but the breed like bun- er, like mice, so there's always more to take their place when one gets hauled off to jail."

The shift key is a tool that must be used wisely. Used correctly, and you will have the Proper Capitalisation of Justice. Used incorrectly, and you will end up with the sTiCkY cApS oF iNjUsTiCe.

My favourite defender of Justice from back home is Trip Regis. Because he's a lot like me, except the part where he has green hair and is an alien. That's different. But he was a Green Ranger, and green's my favourite colour and I kinda hope I'll get to be Green Ranger one day too.

Re: Turn Stuff In [Class #6]

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-01-27 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
The Shift Key of Justice allows us to know the boundaries of our world, and not run off without pause or punctuation. Like the laws and rules which govern our interactions with others, the shift key gives us seconds to stop, reflect, and recognize where the Fun of Originality is over-run by the Pointlessness of Linguistic Chaos.

Parker pauses. She does not have a favorite defender that she feels comfortable writing about. That kind of thing, you never know who it'll get back to.

My favorite defender of justice is fictional: Agent Lana Mully, from the Z-Cases. She is a federal agent investigating crime with her partner, Wolf Lunder, but she is also a scientist and a rationalist. I aspire to look at concrete evidence in much the way Lana Mully does, without going off on wild goose chases or getting abducted by aliens for no good reason, like her partner.
