Student Council meeting [Lunch time]

Josh sat at his desk eating a sandwich and flipping through the Washington Post as he waited for the members of the Student Council to arrive.

He pointed to the sign-in sheet when they arrived. "Welcome to the new incarnation of the Student Council. I know most of you, but for those I don't, I'm Josh Lyman. I teach history, government, and politics now, but up until a few weeks ago, I was the deputy chief of staff for the Bartlet Administration. I'm here to tell you that actual politics bears a shockingly close resemblance to Student Council work--the only difference is the national government has more funding and we spend less time worrying about school spirit and pep rallies."

Josh swung his feet onto his desk. "Because there are twelve of you representing the various classes here, I want you all to have an equal say--but we do need one person to be more equal than others. Someone who wants to be in charge. Someone who, and this is very important, isn't me."

He rubbed his hands through his hair. "First order of business, then: who wants to be President?"

[OOC: slowplay will be our friend as to make sure all StuCo members in various timezones can play, too.]

"I think Blair still has the list we made of things the Freshman class was thinking of... But I do know we need to find a service to refill the vending machines in the dorms more often."

Blair bounced and dragged his notebook out of his bag. "Yup, Pippi. The freshman list has lower vending machine prices, activities in the dorm rooms that are spread out on more than the 2nd floor, lots of stuff about having our own water guns and our motto Freshest of the Fresh" Blair looked up from his notebook.

"I also want to work on starting a homework help group to pair up students with tutors."

"But the second floor is better," Angel said. "The paint's nicer, plus people don't have to climb up so high."

"ESCAPE THE BONDS OF TYRANNY! DECENTRALIZATION OF POWER! DELIVER FREEDOM TO ALL! PROVIDE A SAFE & SECURE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT! SENTIENT MACHINES ARE PEOPLE TOO! uh... REDUCED VENDING MACHINE PRICES!"

Blair wasn't really sure what was going on but he pumped a fist in support of the message.

Callisto aimed a light thwap at Marty's head.

"You abandoned our party, you don't get to use our rhetoric anymore."

"Ow! Hey! Are you opressing my rights to free speech! 6 would be ashamed!"

Pip pointed over to Marty. "What Marty said."

Marty tosses off a salute to the new student. "Pip, right? Did we meet at the whole new student gathering thing?"

"Well, I think a senior should be the President because we're better than all of you because they're older and more experienced. Just something to keep in mind."

"Not it," Angel said immediately.

"You know, you're really quite a chicken for a guy your size," Chloe replied, smirking.

"One of the things Peter and I had talked about was organizing game nights in the dorm on at least a monthly basis," Isabel said. "I know that there's usually stuff going on, but a lot of that is fairly spontaneous. If something was organized and announced in advance, it would allow everyone to participate, not just the people who happen to be wandering by when something happens all hell breaks loose.

"Seconded. Besides, we've got a huge influx of new students, and I know many of them are too intimidated to just jump into our craziness."

Re: The brilliant ideas I want to share with the group

[identity profile] peter--parker.livejournal.com 2006-01-20 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Exactly. This way there's at least a little bit of structure before it dissolves into craziness. It's like training wheels into the insanity."

Pip scratched the back of his head. "Well, I was thinking that we might try to see about accomodating some of our students out of place and time. Walter, for example, is from the 1940s. Had a weird time adjusting to modern day technology. Maybe we could sort of set up an acclimation program for people who are seriously out of place?"

"Also a good idea. How would you start it? Handbooks, pairing people up like the Big Sibling program, lectures, what?"

"We need money, we need chaperones, and we need a plan, but I really think there's a need and a desire for a School Trip. Is the Council willing to work on this for later in the semester?"

Elizabeth nodded. "There's been a number of suggestions tossed around before," she said. "Let's see if we can make any of them happen." She grinned at Parker

"I hate myself for it," she muttered, "But dances are very popular here and it's our duty as StuCo blah blah.

Oh. And Jaye Tyler wants a Spirit Week."

"Dances are fun. And Valentine's Day is coming up soon," Isabel said. "And a Spirit Week would be fun. But do we have any sort of school team to root for?"

"Oi, when's the next majorish holiday coming up? Or something we can celebrate?"
