Library, 1/16

A subdued and somewhat red-eyed Angela opens the library at the start of second period and props herself behind the collections desk. She casts a glance at the pile of books to be sorted; she'll get to them eventually.

And then she just sits there, staring into space and thinking.

She has her head buried in her hands, but she would be more alert if someone came in. Probably.

Vala stopped by after lunch and entered the room carefully. She'd heard plenty of things about the library, and the most time she'd ever spent there had been during the Zombie Invasion... so the place made her kind of nervous. But this class (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomhigh/506197.html) was going to kill her without some serious help...

"You're Zero, right?" Vala asked. The girl's hair was even more distinctive than her own and she'd seen her around campus; Vala just hoped she had the name right.

"Well, we're in Medieval English History together and I need to do my assignment, and I was wondering if you could show me where to find something on this Bow-dika (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomhigh/506197.html?thread=23386453#t23386453)? You know, the one who led the Roman revolt?

"Oh, well, Boudicca, sure. Have you ever used the card catalogue before? Oh, and you do have a library card, right?"

"I have a card!" Vala pulled it out quickly and held it up like a talisman. Even she knew bad things happened to those without library cards.

"Um... catalogue?"

"Oh, swerval, things'll go much quicker that way." Zero gestured toward a dark corner of the library, where a large wooden cabinet took up most of the space. "The card catalogue has all the books in the library sorted by title, author, and subject. You look up your subject an' hope it's there--which it usually is, here--then go lookin' for books with that call number. It's. Kind of complicated. I don't even understand how the call numbers work."

"O.K., so I look for her name and then numbers... then books...." She raised an eyebrow. "Who came up with this system?" Her voice is hushed, but her bewilderment and disbelief are obvious.

"Some dead guy named Dewey. Which it's lucky he's dead. For him. Otherwise, pissed-off library users across the universe'd be beatin' him down. S'supposed to make things easier, is the funny part." Zero looks sympathetic. "I tried t'convince Professor Methos to do it some other way, but no. Did you find anything useful?"

"Um, maybe?" She points to a card. "So... 941... would be where?"

"Um...Down about four stacks and to the left. About...halfway down, maybe?" Zero looks briefly confused, then shakes her head. "Yeah, I think that's right."

"Uh, o.k. Thanks," she mutters as she wanders off, remembering why she tended to avoid places like libraries...
