MWF Anthro Courses
[OOC: *has way too much homework, takes the easy way out* Note: You don't need to actually submit an essay on ethnocentrism and cultural relativism. I don't have enough time to read them anyway XD. Just comment either that you're handing it in and whether it's actually good enough to receive a high mark or that you're not handing it in or whatever.]
Intro:
For this class, I will need you to write me an essay on the difference between ethnocentrism and cultural relativism. It will be due before next class (Wednesday). Either e-mail it to me or place it in my box.
-----
Egyptian Arch:
Slide identification! Pick your favorite Egyptian artifact and tell me when it was found, when it was from, and a small blurb on its significance.
-----
Linguistics:
This is our second class. Since the Greek alphabet is something not everyone is familiar on, I'll need you to study it. You'll be quizzed on it next class. Greek symbols will come up time and again, so it is important you know which is which.

Re: HOMEWORK (Egypt)
The history behind the piece of fascinating. Hitler actually refused to return this piece back to the Egyptians, stating that "Do you know what I’m going to do one day? I’m going to build a new Egyptian museum in Berlin. I dream of it. Inside I will build a chamber, crowned by a large dome. In the middle, this wonder, Nefertiti, will be enthroned. I will never relinquish the head of the Queen.. The artifact still resides in Berlin to this day.
I find the struggle between the nations that produced classic ancient art, and modern first world nations, for possession of these treasures to be indicative of many larger social issues on a whole. I chose this piece in particular because it is a strong woman that is represented, and there are few historical figures that we glory as much as Nefertiti. The idea of nations struggling over ownership of a queen appeals to me on several levels.
The bust is also very visually appealing, with Nefertiti's strong, slender features, and the depiction of her eyes is intriguing. It also possesses the classic beauty of Egyptian art, and is a good example of bust making in its time period.
