MWF Anthro Courses

[OOC: *has way too much homework, takes the easy way out* Note: You don't need to actually submit an essay on ethnocentrism and cultural relativism. I don't have enough time to read them anyway XD. Just comment either that you're handing it in and whether it's actually good enough to receive a high mark or that you're not handing it in or whatever.]

Intro:

For this class, I will need you to write me an essay on the difference between ethnocentrism and cultural relativism. It will be due before next class (Wednesday). Either e-mail it to me or place it in my box.

-----

Egyptian Arch:

Slide identification! Pick your favorite Egyptian artifact and tell me when it was found, when it was from, and a small blurb on its significance.

-----

Linguistics:

This is our second class. Since the Greek alphabet is something not everyone is familiar on, I'll need you to study it. You'll be quizzed on it next class. Greek symbols will come up time and again, so it is important you know which is which.

Dr. Jackson, is it possible to add Greek/Roman here, or should I do it on the other thread?

I asked to be added in the first sign-up thread, but...

Could I be added to Intro to Anth, please?

Eh, what's one more class...

Linguistics can't be that hard... can it?

*Lana hands in a thoughtfully written essay on her favorite Egyptian artifact from the slides. She's clearly spent far more time than necessary on it, maybe she's trying to impress the professor?*

Homework - Intro to Anth

*hands in a page of neat, tidy script*

Ethnocentrism, with "ethno", coming from the Greek for "nation", is where you look, study and judge the other cultures in the world with the biases and the POV from your own culture. In comparison, cultural relatitivism is where a person's actions make sense in their own culture. It's a principle which most anthropologists adhere to today, after being introduced and popularized by Franz Boaz and his students in the 1940s.

[ooc: Hmmm... clearly I was listening in first year ;)]

Wow! This is a really fascinating class! I'm so glad you had room for me, Dr. Jackson!

Sir, I tried signing up this morning, but I'm not sure if I you received my request.

Homework - Egyptian

*Beka hands in a typed page*

Slide no. 88209. Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, acc. no. same. "Pilgrimage Ampulla from the Shrine of St. Menas". Found Karanis, Egypt mid 1900s.

The piece is a terracotta flash of two similarly molded halves which, pressed together, form the rough-edged whole. One handle and the rimmed neck have broken off and arguably the most important part--the blessed substance it used to contain--is missing. The image of St. Menas is difficult to read, having been worn smooth in places by frequent handling, however the saint is clearly identifiable as Menas by the two camels which flank the saint, orans with arms extended, belted tunic, long riding cloak, and a small cross above each arm.

While Gary Vikan has written that such pieces were "portable palpable sanctity, which possessed and could convey spiritual power to the owner." However, if it were merely such, the artistic devices on the ampullaae would be unnecessary. Scholar Maggie Flowers has written that "impressed with the saint's images and filled with his miraculous manna, these small sacred objects would have become an integral part of the daily existence and devotional thought of the pilgrims who owned them."

With the benefit of time and distance, it's clear that the ampullae were, indeed, not only "blessings" and/or magical amulets, but also devotional items to assist the worshipper, returned from the shrine, in attaining the liminal state of pilgrimage during daily worship and communion.

Um. *bites inside of lip* Dr. Jackson, I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't let it get around that I actually did my homework. I do have a reputation to protect.
