MWF Anthro Courses

[OOC: *has way too much homework, takes the easy way out* Note: You don't need to actually submit an essay on ethnocentrism and cultural relativism. I don't have enough time to read them anyway XD. Just comment either that you're handing it in and whether it's actually good enough to receive a high mark or that you're not handing it in or whatever.]

Intro:

For this class, I will need you to write me an essay on the difference between ethnocentrism and cultural relativism. It will be due before next class (Wednesday). Either e-mail it to me or place it in my box.

-----

Egyptian Arch:

Slide identification! Pick your favorite Egyptian artifact and tell me when it was found, when it was from, and a small blurb on its significance.

-----

Linguistics:

This is our second class. Since the Greek alphabet is something not everyone is familiar on, I'll need you to study it. You'll be quizzed on it next class. Greek symbols will come up time and again, so it is important you know which is which.

*Lana hands in a thoughtfully written essay on her favorite Egyptian artifact from the slides. She's clearly spent far more time than necessary on it, maybe she's trying to impress the professor?*

Homework - Intro to Anth

*hands in a page of neat, tidy script*

Ethnocentrism, with "ethno", coming from the Greek for "nation", is where you look, study and judge the other cultures in the world with the biases and the POV from your own culture. In comparison, cultural relatitivism is where a person's actions make sense in their own culture. It's a principle which most anthropologists adhere to today, after being introduced and popularized by Franz Boaz and his students in the 1940s.

[ooc: Hmmm... clearly I was listening in first year ;)]

Just because I happen to enjoy learning, doesn't make me a kiss up!

It's not the learning. It's the *I* was paying attention last term stuff.

Kiss up (sticks out tongue and raspberries)

I chose this bust of Nefertiti (http://stevenlehrer.com/images/Nefertiti.jpg), discovered in 1912 in Armana.

The history behind the piece of fascinating. Hitler actually refused to return this piece back to the Egyptians, stating that "Do you know what I’m going to do one day? I’m going to build a new Egyptian museum in Berlin. I dream of it. Inside I will build a chamber, crowned by a large dome. In the middle, this wonder, Nefertiti, will be enthroned. I will never relinquish the head of the Queen.. The artifact still resides in Berlin to this day.

I find the struggle between the nations that produced classic ancient art, and modern first world nations, for possession of these treasures to be indicative of many larger social issues on a whole. I chose this piece in particular because it is a strong woman that is represented, and there are few historical figures that we glory as much as Nefertiti. The idea of nations struggling over ownership of a queen appeals to me on several levels.

The bust is also very visually appealing, with Nefertiti's strong, slender features, and the depiction of her eyes is intriguing. It also possesses the classic beauty of Egyptian art, and is a good example of bust making in its time period.

John tears a page out of his spiral notebook. Hands it in with a smirk.

Directions: Write a well known English phrase using the Greek Alphabet.

Eta Alpha Tau Mu Iota Sigma Chi Omega Rho Tau Sigma.

Note to the prof: There's no 'Y' in Greek, so I used Iota. There's no 'H' either, so I used Chi. - Sheppard

This (http://www.sculpturegallery.com/egypt2/king_tut_mask_lg_red.jpg) was my favorite slide. It was found in 1922 on the mummy of King Tut, who lived in 1325 BCE. It's 24 pounds of solid gold, inlaid lapis lazuli, carnelian, quartz, turquoise, obsidian, and colored glass, and is currently in the Cairo museum.

*DEATH hands in a detailed 72 page paper detailing the various meaning of ethnocentrism and how they relate to various cultures on the Discworld, being very thorough and yet, not terribly original or insightful. He cites one reference: Himself.*

Re: HOMEWORK - INTRO

[identity profile] harried-potter.livejournal.com 2005-09-13 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
[handed in on parchment, written in careful script]

Cultural relativism is the idea that everyone's beliefs and actions make sense according to the way they've been brought up - their cultural reference.

Ethnocentricity is the idea that one's own culture, beliefs, and actions are superior to those of other cultures.

In cultural relativism, differences are accounted for because of a person's cultural and societal upbringing. In ethnocentricity, a person's differences are scorned as inferior simply because they are different.

[continues, giving examples from South-East Asian cannibal tribes and American ethnocentricism, in British spelling]

Illyana frowns as she ponders the assignment. Finally she picked something that looked interesting to her wrote a quick blurb about it.

She figured it would at least earn her a passing grade.
