Library (12/20/05)

Janet ran towards the library. She'd overslept, and it looked like no one else had gotten it open yet. She flipped on the lights, unloaded the food from last night's shopping trip with Parker, made sure that no one but library staff could get to the food, and sat down to start eating while she finished up her Classics project.

The girl gave a soft giggle and disappeared into the dark, shooting the boys a final wink.

Behind them, shelves closed in together, blocking the exit.

"Oh, right, books." If it seemed evident that his less-primary brain was spelling that word with two b's and no k, well, that's... fairly predictable for a 19 year old boy. Xander looked around them, then repeated, a little less dazedly and a little more disappointedly, "Yep. Books."

"Books," Logan agreed. "We're here solely for educational purposes." He continued in the direction of the girl.

Logan and Xander might have caught the sight of the mysterious girl vanishing through a door in the wall.

A low moan came from the darkness, and a single, feminine hand reemerged through the doorway, the index finger beckoning them with a "Come hither," motion.

"You suppose she offers private tutoring?" Xander said as he moved towards the beckoning hand. "Or is this supposed to be a group study session? Because, well..."

"I'm a slow student," Logan said. "I might need some one-on-one attention." He followed the hand as well.

Several more female voices could be heard, and an assortment arms and legs reached out to the boys. It seemed there were at least six women in the dark room.

"Oh, Logan..." called one breahy voice.

"Xander...please," moaned another.

The chorus of voices erupted into moans and cries for either or both boys as the visual indications of female presence retreated into the blackness.

"Sounds like there's plenty of education to go around," Xander muttered as he blindly followed the sounds.

"Group study, then," Logan said. He reached out for a hand, but it slipped away before he could touch it. Belatedly, he looked around. "Um. Wasn't dark supposed to be bad?"

Xander stopped moving, then blinked. Which didn't, unsurprisingly, make the lights come on.

"I... seem to remember associating those two words, yeah. Also 'run' and 'exit'. Except I'm starting to see some conflict between those concepts, specifically where they cross on 'dark' and 'exit.'"

Re: In the stacks

Now Logan looked around. "Exit," he repeated. "Um. Wasn't it that way?" He pointed vaguely, not that Xander could see it in the dark.

One by one, candles flickered along the walls, showing the room to be circular and seemingly filled with a dozen shadowy doorways, much like the one they had just entered through.

In each doorway stood a woman - and like the original, each one reflected whatever Logan or Xander's particular fantasy might be.

All of them seemed to be beckoning.

And if Logan and Xander were to look behind them, they would see that the door they had entered through had vanished.

"Did somebody say exit?" Xander said, pointing to the doorway nearest him.

He strode forward into it --

-- and found himself smacked hard in the face.

Logan winced. He reached out to the doorway nearest him and sighed when something stopped his hand. "Figures," he said.

The glass disappeared under Logan's hand.

Incidentally, so did all of the girls, and all but one candle flickered out.

Xander rubbed at his aching nose. "May I take this moment to say for the record, ow?" He walked carefully towards the remaining light, his other hand held out before him to forestall any more chance meetings between face and hard things.

"So noted," Logan said. He turned towards the remaining candle.

Re: In the stacks

[identity profile] spec-collection.livejournal.com 2005-12-21 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
As they approached it, another candle lit, about fifteen feet down the hallway. Books on one side; stone wall on the other. As they got close to each candle, another one farther along would light, and the ones behind them would go out.

A low rumbling was coming from in front of them.... and then a bookcase moved, with a grinding, creaking sound, to block off the way behind them.

"Golly gee whilikers, I wonder if something wants us to go thataway?" Xander said, staring balefully into the darkness beyond the candle.

Re: In the stacks

[identity profile] spec-collection.livejournal.com 2005-12-21 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
As they rounded the corner of the row of books, they saw the source of the rumbling.

Fifteen feet in front of them, curled up in the corner between the wall and the turn around the rows, was a huge pile of books, at least six feet high--

--and on top of that was a sleeping dragon. About twenty feet long, lavendar-to-green scales, huuuge snout, and talons as long as their forearms.

It was wearing bifocals.

ZZZZZZZZZ... zzzzzz... ZZZZZZZ... zzzz.....

Logan stopped. "Okay, this sort of thing is pretty uncommon where I come from," he whispered, "so I may be mistaken, but I think that's a dragon."

"I hate to be known as the Boy Who Cried We Have All The Weird Shit In My Town Except That, but I'm pretty much going from hearsay on that one too," Xander replied quietly.

Re: In the stacks

[identity profile] spec-collection.livejournal.com 2005-12-21 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
The dragon shifted on top of the books, sending a few skittering down. There was just about space between the books and the bookcase to walk by, single file, and around the corner.

Assuming you wanted to get within six feet of a sleeping dragon, that was.

ZZZZZZ... zzzzz... ZZZZZ... zzzz....

The bookcases, on the other hand, did not reach the ceiling here. They were only about fifteen feet tall.
fh_jackass: Logan Echolls (WTF?)

Re: In the stacks

[personal profile] fh_jackass 2005-12-21 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
Logan looked at the options. Squeeze by a sleeping dragon - or climb the bookcases.

Dragon. Dragon.

Logan grabbed the shelf of the nearest bookcase and began to climb.
