Library (12/20/05)

Janet ran towards the library. She'd overslept, and it looked like no one else had gotten it open yet. She flipped on the lights, unloaded the food from last night's shopping trip with Parker, made sure that no one but library staff could get to the food, and sat down to start eating while she finished up her Classics project.

The glass disappeared under Logan's hand.

Incidentally, so did all of the girls, and all but one candle flickered out.

Xander rubbed at his aching nose. "May I take this moment to say for the record, ow?" He walked carefully towards the remaining light, his other hand held out before him to forestall any more chance meetings between face and hard things.

"So noted," Logan said. He turned towards the remaining candle.

As they approached it, another candle lit, about fifteen feet down the hallway. Books on one side; stone wall on the other. As they got close to each candle, another one farther along would light, and the ones behind them would go out.

A low rumbling was coming from in front of them.... and then a bookcase moved, with a grinding, creaking sound, to block off the way behind them.

"Golly gee whilikers, I wonder if something wants us to go thataway?" Xander said, staring balefully into the darkness beyond the candle.

As they rounded the corner of the row of books, they saw the source of the rumbling.

Fifteen feet in front of them, curled up in the corner between the wall and the turn around the rows, was a huge pile of books, at least six feet high--

--and on top of that was a sleeping dragon. About twenty feet long, lavendar-to-green scales, huuuge snout, and talons as long as their forearms.

It was wearing bifocals.

Logan stopped. "Okay, this sort of thing is pretty uncommon where I come from," he whispered, "so I may be mistaken, but I think that's a dragon."

"I hate to be known as the Boy Who Cried We Have All The Weird Shit In My Town Except That, but I'm pretty much going from hearsay on that one too," Xander replied quietly.

The dragon shifted on top of the books, sending a few skittering down. There was just about space between the books and the bookcase to walk by, single file, and around the corner.

Assuming you wanted to get within six feet of a sleeping dragon, that was.

ZZZZZZ... zzzzz... ZZZZZ... zzzz....

The bookcases, on the other hand, did not reach the ceiling here. They were only about fifteen feet tall.

Logan looked at the options. Squeeze by a sleeping dragon - or climb the bookcases.

Dragon. Dragon.

Logan grabbed the shelf of the nearest bookcase and began to climb.

"Nice...sleepy dragon," Xander muttered as he followed suit. "Goood sleepy dragon. Preferably deaf sleepy dragon..."

ZZZZZZZ.... zzzzz.... ZZZzzzz...

"Ahem. I say. While you're up there? Would you mind throwing down The Two Towers? I hate to get up when I'm so comfy," a very polite, English-accented voice behind and below them said.

Logan's foot slipped and threw him off balance. He clung to the upper shelf, dangling. "Shit," he said.

Xander, a couple shelves below, scrambled up and over, then reached out an arm to offer a brace while Logan found a new foothold.
