The Library Is Open - 12/19

Methos looks like he hasn't slept, and possibly has been hit by a 2 x 4 somewhere along the way.

He's working on translating the text that came for him several weeks ago, making notes in a spiral-bound notebook. If you were, say, Daniel Jackson, you might recognize the notes as sort of a bastard Medieval Latin, heavily abbreviated.

Did we mention the not-good-mood?

Janet came in, smiling, after her Classics lesson today. She very much didn't glance at any translations that Methos was doing. Because she wasn't curious. Not at all. She just sat down and started writing up her final project for her language classes--in between doing actual library work, of course.

"How's it going?" she asked, once she was finally bored with schoolwork.

Angela bounces in, ready to ask about the holiday party -- and decides that might not be a good idea after she sees the look on the librarian's face.

Bounciness restrained, she takes a seat on a stool behind the counter and begins idly flipping through the book Anakin gave her.

As the library is always comforting, Lee comes in, smelling of freshly made bread as he made loaves of bread all night long, omg, and reads quietly.

"You expect me to know? Do I get linguistics credit and library science credit now?" Janet leans over the book, wearing her t-shirt from Parker. "Choice prostitute," she said, making her best guess. "Though honestly, if you need a hand with the translating, Daniel would probably be far better at it than me. Dead, almost untranslatable languages are a hobby for him."

"I'll ask him," mouths Janet from where she's talking to Dr. Pierson.

Angela nods, a look of relief on her face. "Thank you," she mouths back.

*Zero comes in, looking cheery, and veers toward a far corner of the Collections Desk when she sees the look on Methos' face.*

"If you want irony early on Monday morning, you should be supplying coffee," said Janet. "Daniel speaks--" She paused for a moment to try to remember. "I forget. Over twenty languages. And didn't I say 'dead, almost untranslatable languages are a hobby for him?' Even if he didn't speak it, he might enjoy the attempt at translation. But, of course, I would never try to give two people who might enjoy each other's company any common ground for conversation. Please, can you ever forgive me for trying to get you out of your shell?"

"By the way, you forgot to tell Angela that you're having a party for the library staff. Or are you too grouchy for that? If you're not, you might want to check and see when everyone who's leaving town is actually going. Then you'll know if you need to change the date."

Janet comes over and grins. "I forgot last night that I'd told him Wednesday would be a good day for a party. We talked about it last week, but the news got lost in our annoyance at his leaving the library."

She closes up her Classics paper and shoves it in her backpack. "I told him to check with the library staff, though, and see when everyone's going home. Maybe he'll change the date to Tuesday, if he's not too grumpy to take a decent suggestion."

Janet waves. "Are you done with classes?" she asks.

Janet waves at Zero. "Don't worry about him. He's just being a bigger pain than usual," she says. Sometimes, the phrase 'walks where where angels fear to tread' describes Janet a little too well.

"Tuesday's better for me," Angela says. "My flight Wednesday -- and I'm so glad my parents sprang for a plane ticket this time, 'cause the train is really annoying -- is right after lunch. I'm going to have to turn in my poetry final early, even."

"But if you guys have plans, I can miss the party." It's clear that she's saying this more to be polite than because she means it.

"I got a poem to write for my poetry class and I think that's about it," he says cheerfully as he's glad to see Janet.

Angel came in, looking furtive and more slouched than usual. Anyone who glanced in the direction of his coat might notice it seemed a bit lumpy around his chest. Also squirming.

Angela gives Angel a wary look. "Hey," she says, then tilts her head, scrutinzing him. "Your coat is, like, in motion."

[identity profile] notstakedyet.livejournal.com 2005-12-19 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Angel looked around to see if anyone was eavesdropping on them. Then he came over with a grin. "Got a Christmas present. Wanna see?"
chasingangela: (happy)

Angela lowered her voice. "Sure, unless it's a gremlin. Which I bet it isn't, geven that you look happy and not insane."

[identity profile] notstakedyet.livejournal.com 2005-12-19 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"I thought gremlin too," Angel agreed. He opened his coat enough for a puppy's head to pop out (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomhighdorms/329132.html?style=mine#cutid1). "See? Phale gave him to me."

"Why aren't you at the hospital?" asked Janet. "The next time something like that comes up, leave. Be with your girlfriend instead of worrying and taking it out on people who don't deserve it."

"We'll have the party tomorrow. It works better for Angela that way. Give me your credit card number. I'll order punch and snacks, make sure you don't get greviously overbilled. And then you need to go to wherever CJ's been admitted and find out what's happening."

She leaned in and said, low enough that she wouldn't be overheard. "Sneak me a copy of her chart if you can."

"We're talking about Tuesday anyway," says Janet. "Nobody should have to miss the party."

"That's an easy assignment," said Janet. "How long does the poem have to be?" She grins, glad to see Lee's in a better mood this week.

"Puppy!" Angela squeals, then quickly resumes a library-appropriate volume. "Black labs are so, so cute."

"Have you named him yet? I mean, is it a he or a she?"
