The Library (12/09/05)

Having no classes on Fridays, Janet got to the library early, and started working on her independent study for math.

She also posted a sign on the door. "Library Closing At 1:00 PM Today"

Sam made a beeline directly for the desk. "Hey. I don't know about you, but I think I cracked a rib laughing yesterday."

"Best holiday pageant ever." She nodded, grinning. "Between the three of us, I think we should wallpaper the room in pictures. Or at least the hallway outside 238."

"Thanks, I've been trying to work on it," Sam said. "So, I've got all three rolls of film, that's 72 pictures, plus whatever you, Daniel, Elizabeth, Charlie, and Parker got, since I assume you'll all contribute prints, right?"

"Yay." Sam smiled, a bit proud of herself for the idea. Stuff like this was really more O'Neill's area. "So, any idea what this club thing of Parker's is about? I got the e-mail, but it wasn't really clear."

"What'd he have to say? I'm still a little confused about why I'm on the list--I'm not exactly superhuman or covert ops trained."

"I know what you mean," Sam said. "He may be a little more uncoordinated than Angelus," she snickered, remembering the dancing and the falling from the rigging thing, "but from what little I've seen, he seems like a real person now, for lack of a better term."

Feeling slightly like she was being allowed on hallowed ground, Sam walked behind the desk.

Sam almost stuck her tongue out at Janet, but remembered where she was and decided she didn't want to make the library angry with her.

"An anti...what? Janet, that's nuts." She leaned closer and whispered, "Let Spider and Bristow handle it--it's what they're there for."

"Sure, ask me to handle aliens, wormholes, computers, or explosives, and I'm your girl. Sneaky is really not my thing, Janet, and you know it."

"Point, I guess." She still wasn't crazy about the idea of performing surveillance on her classmates, though. "I didn't say I wasn't coming. Just remarking on the craziness inherent in the idea, that's all."

"Oh, god do I understand boredom," Sam said. "I was just talking about this to Liz last weekend--we used to be so much more than this."

She shrugged and began playing with a paperclip, unbending it. "I'm just not overly fond of watching my friends get injured or killed, that's all. I worry. Especially since most of us on that list are human and they're...not. We could be setting ourselves up for trouble."

"Almost every day," Sam said, "but I didn't want to bring it up, because it sounds so stupid. I mean, you hear 'oh, my life is so horrible, nothing's tried to kill me in months' and you start looking for the nice jacket with the extra long sleeves and the shiny buckles, right?"

"I hope that's what it means," she smiled at Janet. "And I'm not completely apathetic. Just conditioned to respect authority and that the chain of command can save your life in the field. You know."

"They really are. I mean, 200 words on Greek Architecture? Who cares?"

"No, nothing's quite as annoying as being traumatized," she said, dryly. "I know. And the training really stuck, since my father was big into the same thing. Think of it as early indoctrination into a cult."

"Being a good girl is boring. I don't have nearly as much fun as the rule breakers seem to." She said, thinking of the pageant.
