Library is open (12/7/05)

For everyone who needs to do research for projects.

"You're the one who wanted her to see the scriptorium."

Zero turned to a nearby bookcase and told it, "Thank you!"

"There weren't any monks in it last time!" Parker scowled, then shut the door.

"Okay, I'm completely turned around. But I don't think we're in the Middle Ages or whatever any more. What does the map say?"

"Map says...that way!" Rory declared, pointing to their left. "Let's go."

It did look like the right way.

Glass windows on either side of them were bounded by wood-and-metal bookshelves, and gently glowing neon lights along the walls.

They reached a door that said "Special Collections -- Authorized Personell Only."

Next to the door was a computerized keypad.

"Oh, *frell* me, now what?" Parker asked in dismay. "You have to be kidding me! What would the code be?"

*flatly* I don't know. Why don't you ask the initiate?

"Don't look at me, Rory. I have no idea."

Rory stared. "Is it supposed to be for me? Because I'll start trying my passwords, then." She bit her lip. "But I don't know what'll happen if I'm wrong."

"It's worth a shot, though. I think," Parker said, worriedly. "And it's probably for you, since this is your first trip in here."

Worst that can happen is we're stuck here until Professor Pierson comes t'look for us.

I brought bottled water and snacks.

Rory sighed.

She punched in '7679' and waited.

The lock beeped, the little light on it turned yellow, and did nothing.

A couple minutes later, the sound of an electric wheelchair was heard from around the corner of the bookcases.

"Can I help you?" asked the redhead in the chair, looking at them in perplexity. "That section is really only for library aides."

Oh, Miss, we are library aides. I just...don' think we're library aides here exactly. Squallin' soft space.

"We're aides, ma'am," Angela ventures.

The woman tilted her head,and light bounced off her glasses. "Aides, but not aides here, and-- soft space?" She rolled her eyes. "Stupid dimensional shifts," she muttered, rolling forward.

"Okay, I have an idea on this-- what's the name of your library?" she asked them.

"Fandom High," Parker said, moving out of her way. "And you believe us?"

Somehow it was odder that a woman in a perfectly modern wheelchair believed them, rather than the old-fashioned Lucien.

It's on Fandom Island, Virginia.

Wait. You know about the dimensional shifts?

"They're not common, but they do happen. I know a couple people from alternate universes, parallel worlds. I've noticed shifts tend to happen more in this area of Gotham than anywhere else," the woman said, punching in 326366475263 to the keypad. "And they're usually very brief. Better hurry!"

"Don't need to tell me twice," Parker said, striding through the door. "Thanks, Miss, uh, I didn't get your name? I'm Parker." She held the door for the other four, and glanced back.

Angela rushes through the door with barely a backward glance. "Nice to meet you," she mutters before leaving.

"Thanks!" Rory called, heading through the door. "I'm Rory. Thanks!"

She was repetitive when she was grateful.

Well. You'll do. Just remember what I said about the monks.

"Barbara Gordon. Good luck!"

The door closed behind them, and when they turned around--

-- they were back next to the Green Section at the front, next to the reading area with the leather couches.

"And that is why we collect snacks," Parker said, opening the door to the main Library. "Still want the job, Gilmore?"

"You're all right, Rory?" asked Janet
