The Library Is Open (12/05/05)

Janet unlocks the library and flips on the lights.

Sitting on the Collections Desk is a package addressed to "Adam Pierson." The envelope is embossed with an unusual symbol, the meaning of which Janet didn't know. Except she did, because she steamed open the last envelope that came with that symbol on it. But she couldn't do that to this package without getting caught. And that was really starting to bug her.

She moved the package behind the Collections Desk and glared at it until the first library patron showed up.

Nope. I came for you and Zero. I, uh, brought you a little thank you for being so cool on Thursday and not pressing it. [She's in short sleeves, completely unblemished, and downright...perky. She sets the basket in front of Parker.] So I brought you food. But only you girls. Share with Janet.

[Inside is an assortment of croissant and baguette, cheeses, and fruit.]

Brightening, and then blushing, Parker looked over the basket. "You didn't have to do that. I mean, you *really* didn't."

It's really nothing. I'm so thankful that you girls respected my privacy and my judgement. Everything's fine now...I just, yeah, thank you. [She smiles softly and pats Parker's hand.]

Parker's torn between confessing they talked to Dr. Pierson (and really, really pissed him and Ten off) and not wanting to rat out either Zero or herself. "Yeahhhh," she agrees. "Um. Is whoever hurt you-- I mean. I hope that's not going to happen again?"

No, hon. Not again. I took care of it. [Her smile is still soft, but her eyes go steely and cold.] It won't ever happen again.

It meant a lot that so many people were so worried. I...didn't expect that. But honestly, it was really just a misunderstanding. It's all, um, swerval now. [She smiles brighter, getting this hip lingo that the kids are using down.]

Parker bites her lip, hiding a grin. "That's good to know. Zero and I were-- well. We couldn't think of who did it, so we were kind of freaked out." She hurries on. "But as long as you're okay, and safe, that's the main thing."

Well, I didn't want to say...but I was kind of convinced after a couple people figured it out that there was going to be a lynch mob. And I really do care about...him. I'm actually going to talk to him today. [Her eyes dart to the office door.] But keep that under your hat.

Parker's eyes widen. "Ohhhh. C.J. Please, no. Don't. I can't. If he asks, I'll cave. He was so worried about you--" She closes her eyes, aware of her slip.

Parker...he's training Jack to use a sword. He can't know. Don't ask, don't tell. He won't ask because he can't possibly know. and he'll be here all day, right? Just...be cool. You can keep a secret, can't you?

"Oh," said Janet. Her tone was very polite. "You remembered me. Thanks."


OOC: Just so you know? Janet is very, very irritated by the drama in the library on Friday. And while she doesn't have a clear idea of what's going on IC, she's very annoyed at all the grown-ups involved.

Parker shoots Janet a quick glance, and looks away, her shoulders slumping. "Have a baguette."

"You want to talk when Zero gets here?" asks Janet quietly.

Parker nods, folding her arms. "I guess."

"Are you okay?" asks Janet. She looks concerned. "I'm sorry, you know."

"I know. You can tell because I'm not yelling or throwing things at you two." She rubbed her face. "And no, I am very very far from okay."

"I don't know." Parker rubbed her face, looking at both of them. "I have to talk to him. Not to ask him about this, but just to see if I can tell--" She made a helpless gesture, then swallowed. "And after that, I want to kill him," she said, her voice dropping.

Of course, Janet. Someone who gets that much time and effort out of Adam when it comes to shopping for jewelry demands attention. [She smiles, but it doesn't reach her eyes. Not even a little.]

Janet resists the urge to raise an eyebrow at Professor Cregg, and keeps her expression calm and polite instead. Hm. That was certainly unexpected. However, it did explain the fact that Professor Cregg generally ignored her existence.

"Well, the professor is a friend," says Janet mildly. "I enjoy working with him. It's certainly been a learning experience for me."


OOC: *snicker* And me play up on that fact? Never.

I'm sure it has. He's lucky to have such a dedicated girl on his staff. He says the library wouldn't keep running without you. I suppose i should thank you, making his life so easy. [She's cool and pleasant, well, just pleasant enough.]

Janet automatically bit back her irritation at being called a girl.

"I'm an organized kind of person," says Janet calmly. "And I like helping people. It's what I do best, so it's nice to hear that I'm successful at it. Thank you."

You're welcome. Give my regards to Daniel. I need to...go. [She finishes with Parker, and leaves, determined to try to avoid Janet at all costs before she can't be civil anymore.]
