Shop Class: 11/29

When the students enter the room, they'll find that it has been turned into a scrap yard again. A standard metal workshop is available as well.

"Today we'll be making a human powered vehicle based on what you find here in the junk yard."

The Rules:
Vehicle must be able to hold four people
Must be able to turn and run on a racing track.
No engines
No welding bicycles together, though bike parts can be used.
Must be safe (Mac will judge)
Helmets must be worn while operating the vehicle.

"Get Started!"

Sam began hunting for bike chains and gears, piling what she found onto one of the tables.

Cally begins digging around for bicycle pedals and chains. She also starts pulling out whatever wheels and axels she can find.

When she sees the extra long, grease-stained and tattered sofa jutting out of one of the piles of scrap, she gets an idea. She places a little octagonal post-it on the end of the couch, saying "Claimed by Cally, thanks", and goes about finding a car axel and some seat belts.

She's planning on strapping wheels, a steering device, some seat belts, and bike pedals onto a couch. She's in an odd mood today, apparently.

"You're in a weird mood today, coach," remarks Anders, who's feeling rather non-talkative, yet helpful, and in a mood to state the obvious.

[OOC: Busy busy busy today -- interaction will be very sporadic at best until I get home tonight, so assume he's here and, you know, doing the mindless heavy lifting.]

"Hey, a pedal-powered-plushie-couchmobile is totally the way to go."

And because Anders can lift things, and Cally can build things and both players are OMGWTF busy, they assemble said device. Complete with stablizing caster weels, two big tires on the sides of the couch, that turn with the steering wheel mounted slightly off center in front of the couch, and there are four sets of seatbelts and a bicycle pedals as well.

This whole thing makes sense in Cally's brain. And it will probably move. With a LOT of pedalling effort.

It looks cool, though. That's what really matters.

Rogue starts picking through the junk yard, pulling out four wheels and various gears. She piles them on the table and starts (poorly) assembling something that looks like a go-kart. She looks in dire need of some help.

John accidentally bumps up against her after finding the paddleboat.

"Oh, I'm sorry," he said, automatically, before he realizes who it was.

"Um," he said, swallowing almost audibly, "I'm sorry about the other night. Gremlin. Ed told me about what happened and stuff."

Once again clad in gloves, Bridge assumes the thinking position for a few minutes before shouting "that's it!" and starting to hunt for useful parts.

Finding no wheels that'll work properly with the idea he has, he looks to the teacher with a frown.

"Hey, Mac... is it okay if our vehicle uses a motor, if that motor isn't what actually is responsible for the motion?"

Re: Class Assignment

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam, stuck for an idea for the moment, wandered over to see what Bridge was doing, hands stuck in her pockets. "Hey, Bridge. What're you up to?"

Re: Class Assignment

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"A rickshaw, I think," Bridge informs Sam. "But there aren't any wheels that'd work. What's your opinion on a hover-rickshaw?"

Re: Class Assignment

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, that's really creative." She thought for a second. "How would you make it people-powered? Normally, I'd say you could do something like that with steam, but I don't think that would work."

"What kind of wheels are you looking for? Maybe we could figure something out. I mean, if you don't mind working together on this."

Re: Class Assignment

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, working together would be cool! Well, I was thinking, like, a person could pull it, like a normal rickshaw. But instead of wheels, there'd be an air cushion. I was thinking maybe using a vacuum cleaner motor and that inflatable raft thingie over there," he points. "Oh! And check it out! No mittens!" he adds, wiggling his fingers a little.

Re: Class Assignment

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"Congratulations on the gloves! I know you were bothered yesterday because you didn't have them."

"I've got some bike gears, chains, and pedals already set aside. Maybe we can use those, instead of the vacuum cleaner?" She smiled, then walked back to her table, and quickly returned with them, dumping them in front of Bridge. "I like the air cushion idea, though--I'm just not sure how it would do on the track."

Re: Class Assignment

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sounds good to me!" Bridge chirps. "Hm, you think it'd be problematic?"

Re: Class Assignment

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Aww," Bridge frowns a little sulkily, but then brightens. Between the two of them, he and Sam ought to come up with something brilliant anyway.

"Cool." She grinned. The last time she'd worked with someone so enthusiastic had been Jonas. "So what kind of wheels are you thinking of?"

Re: Class Assignment

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"They'd have to be pretty big ones..." he gestured expansively, "other'n that, I don't really have any specifics in mind."

(ooc: annnd, running off to rl-class now. be back in a couple of hours.)

Re: Class Assignment

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Okay," Sam called, already beginning to climb through the scrap yard.

She began pulling wheels and axles out of piles where she found them, making a separate pile. A few that looked particularly good or, she put in a separate pile. Bridge could pick his favorites.

She also made a small pile of chair casters, thinking that they might use those instead, if they were trying to keep the weight down.

Then, remembering Mac's caveat, she also began looking for lap seat belts. They could attach them somehow.

"Poles. We need some way to attach the poles to the raft."

(ooc: NP. Will be AFK between 5:30 and 6:30 EST anyway.)

Re: Class Assignment

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Bridge stares thoughtfully at the wheel pile before picking four that are all the same size.

And as for the poles, "we could weld them to the oar locks?" he suggests.

Re: Class Assignment

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sounds good," she replied, nodding with approval at the wheels. "Want to play with the welder, or do you want me to do it?"

Re: Class Assignment

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Bridge absolutely does not clap his hands together and go "oooh, fire!". He thinks about it, but instead opts for a simple: "I'll do it!"

Re: Class Assignment

Sam grinned, completely understanding the urge. There'll be other opportunities, though. "It's all yours."

*Given this information, DEATH digs around for a myriad of tennis shoes. He then attachs them to the spokes of a bike wheel, which, in turn, is attached to a pole of sorts, with pedals. Attaching a platform to the top, DEATH has created what appears to be a shod unicycle with a platform.

DEATH, it seems, has forgotten that not everyone has his sense of balance.*

Shep's got a good idea for a smartass decent project, but pulling apart and putting together junk from the heap with one arm wasn't going to be easy. So until someone decides to come work with him, it's going to be very slow building.

Re: Class Assignment

[identity profile] wraithbaitjohn.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"Rock on! Thanks."

Proceeds to make a large box of metal, with no floor and no roof. Four legless chairs are bolted to the sides and the chair next to it to make two rows of two seats. The whole thing is set up on two axels at the very front and back of the box. The front axel has a primitive steering system and is connected to a primitive steering wheel.

The thing is clearly designed to be pushed by foot Fred-Flinstone style by the four people inside.

John starts gathering bike parts and gears and such... and stops dead when he sees a busted paddleboat that had committed seppuku in the far side of the junkyard.

"Bonus!"

Re: Class Assignment

[identity profile] apocalypsesoon.livejournal.com 2005-12-02 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
(ooc: well, since no one else joined in, might as well have John finish it solo)

John took some bike wheels that were not scavanged yet, and found some wheels that looked like they came off a golf cart or a dolly. He fabs up a rudimentary steering mechanism from some bike handlebars and attatches this to the rudder/tiller control on the paddleboat. He sticks the larger bicycle wheels on the ends of the paddlewheel.

And it was done. John then added 4 life vests for safety.

Marty comes into the shop pushing/dragging an item he had picked up at the scrap yard this morning and waves at Bridge.

"Hey Bridge! I hope you don't mind me bringing the project idea I had in mind here. If you can get it working and paint it purple you'd be my hero forever. Also here's my cell phone. It started smoking yesterday and of course doesn't work any more. Can you fix it?"

Re: Office Hours/Open Shop

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Bridge gives the item in question a thoughtful once over.

"Between Callynanders and I? Absolutely, dude, not a problem."

Re: Office Hours/Open Shop

[identity profile] oatmanspatient.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Marty grins. "You rock. How much to do the work on the phone and *that*?"

Marty points to the object that he hauled up from the junkyard.

"And can you get that done before Christmas?"

Re: Office Hours/Open Shop

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Bridge runs a hand through his hair and frowns thoughtfully. "I dunno, I'm not usually the one who decides what we charge... it won't be too much, I think, though, so don't worry about it." He shrugs, "and yeah, before Christmas shouldn't be a problem at all."
