Shop Class: 11/29

When the students enter the room, they'll find that it has been turned into a scrap yard again. A standard metal workshop is available as well.

"Today we'll be making a human powered vehicle based on what you find here in the junk yard."

The Rules:
Vehicle must be able to hold four people
Must be able to turn and run on a racing track.
No engines
No welding bicycles together, though bike parts can be used.
Must be safe (Mac will judge)
Helmets must be worn while operating the vehicle.

"Get Started!"

Sam, stuck for an idea for the moment, wandered over to see what Bridge was doing, hands stuck in her pockets. "Hey, Bridge. What're you up to?"

"A rickshaw, I think," Bridge informs Sam. "But there aren't any wheels that'd work. What's your opinion on a hover-rickshaw?"

"Oh, that's really creative." She thought for a second. "How would you make it people-powered? Normally, I'd say you could do something like that with steam, but I don't think that would work."

"What kind of wheels are you looking for? Maybe we could figure something out. I mean, if you don't mind working together on this."

"No, working together would be cool! Well, I was thinking, like, a person could pull it, like a normal rickshaw. But instead of wheels, there'd be an air cushion. I was thinking maybe using a vacuum cleaner motor and that inflatable raft thingie over there," he points. "Oh! And check it out! No mittens!" he adds, wiggling his fingers a little.

"Congratulations on the gloves! I know you were bothered yesterday because you didn't have them."

"I've got some bike gears, chains, and pedals already set aside. Maybe we can use those, instead of the vacuum cleaner?" She smiled, then walked back to her table, and quickly returned with them, dumping them in front of Bridge. "I like the air cushion idea, though--I'm just not sure how it would do on the track."

"Sounds good to me!" Bridge chirps. "Hm, you think it'd be problematic?"

"Aww," Bridge frowns a little sulkily, but then brightens. Between the two of them, he and Sam ought to come up with something brilliant anyway.

"Only once someone sat down in it," Sam chuckled, brushing some hair out of her eyes. "I think we really need to do another wheel hunt for this, but save the hover idea for an after class activity?"

"Works for me!" Bridge chirps.

"Cool." She grinned. The last time she'd worked with someone so enthusiastic had been Jonas. "So what kind of wheels are you thinking of?"

"They'd have to be pretty big ones..." he gestured expansively, "other'n that, I don't really have any specifics in mind."

(ooc: annnd, running off to rl-class now. be back in a couple of hours.)

"Okay," Sam called, already beginning to climb through the scrap yard.

She began pulling wheels and axles out of piles where she found them, making a separate pile. A few that looked particularly good or, she put in a separate pile. Bridge could pick his favorites.

She also made a small pile of chair casters, thinking that they might use those instead, if they were trying to keep the weight down.

Then, remembering Mac's caveat, she also began looking for lap seat belts. They could attach them somehow.

"Poles. We need some way to attach the poles to the raft."

(ooc: NP. Will be AFK between 5:30 and 6:30 EST anyway.)

Bridge stares thoughtfully at the wheel pile before picking four that are all the same size.

And as for the poles, "we could weld them to the oar locks?" he suggests.

"Sounds good," she replied, nodding with approval at the wheels. "Want to play with the welder, or do you want me to do it?"

Bridge absolutely does not clap his hands together and go "oooh, fire!". He thinks about it, but instead opts for a simple: "I'll do it!"

Sam grinned, completely understanding the urge. There'll be other opportunities, though. "It's all yours."
