Friday Ethics Class, 8-10am

Tara's eyes are shadowed as she greets the class, tension permeating her body.

"I'm sure you've all heard the announcement by now. Angelus has been accused of killing Kitty Pryde - which leaves us short one TA, but up an interesting Ethical question.

"Today we're going to discuss punishment for crimes done."

Belthazor walked into class looking pretty damn cranky. He started to take a seat then saw Phoebe huddled in the corner. Dammit, she must've snuck out of the room after he left. She'd been insisting she wanted to go to Ethics against doctor's orders, and he'd told her in no uncertain tone that she would do no such thing.

He walked over to Phoebe's side and crouched down beside her. "Phoebe, what are you doing here?" he said.

Phoebe looked up, guilt in her eyes. Okay, so she had sort of forgotten in her planning that her p~~ossessive~~rotective boyfriend was in this class with her. Blame the fever.

She bit her lip. "Please, Cole...let me stay? I'll stay right here and as soon as Tara's class is over, I'll go back to the dorm. It's just...I wanted to be here because if the conversations turn to blaming Angelus, I want it known what I think."

He sat down next to her. "Valkyrie has the right idea," he said, scritching the kitten's head. "You shouldn't be out of bed. You're not going to get better this way."

But he saw the stubbornness in her eyes and sighed. "All right, you can stay if Tara lets you," he said. "But the minute you look any sicker I'm shimmering you back to the room, no arguments." He dropped his voice and added, "You may want to rethink saying what you feel about Angelus. Lots of people think he's guilty now -- including Tara -- and they may be unpleasant to those who have differing opinions."

Phoebe looked shocked. "Why would Tara think he's guilty? A few days ago she was agreeing with me when I said that it wasn't like him."

Phoebe felt some of her energy leave her at this news and she leaned against Cole. "Did she tell you that she thought he was guilty?"

"Yeah," Cole said. "Right here in this very room when I stopped by to give her your pass. She said he did it and there was a witness."

Phoebe felt like she had been punched.

"How...how could she think that he would do that?"

He shrugged. "Like I said, she thinks there was a witness. And apparently Veronica Mars uncovered some 'evidence' that he did it." He didn't bother to argue innocence, since it was irrelevant to him.

Phoebe paled and started coughing. She buried her face in the comforter until it passed.

When she looked up at Cole there were tears in her eyes.

"Veronica did this...but why? I thought she liked him?"

It did explain why her friend wouldn't look at her.

"Thought she did, too," Cole muttered. "Guess not. She got her boyfriend tossed in jail for murder, after all, so being in her affections is pretty dangerous."

Phoebe blinked.

"Uhm...what? I think you just lost me, love."

"Don't ask me," Cole said. "From what I hear, she and Logan Echolls used to go out, and she accused him of murder and got him arrested. Turned out he didn't do it. Now she's accusing Angelus of murder. You do the math."

Phoebe dropped her head against Cole.

"This nightmare just keeps getting worse and worse," she said softly. She could feel that Cole was angry about all of this, and again, she cursed inwardly about her getting sick now of all times.

"I told you before, love, I'll do whatever you need me to do to prove that he didn't do this. Just tell me what you need."

Cole put his arm around Phoebe and sat silently for a moment. "And what if he did do it?" he finally asked.

Phoebe felt like she was going to throw up.

"Then...I have to choose between my friend whom I care about and respect ~~and OMG my soulmate, too?!! No!~~ ... and the very close friend that he may have murdered?"

"Do what you need to do," Cole said, gently touching his hand to her face. "Like I have to do what I have to do."

Phoebe nodded. She was really thinking that she shouldn't have come to class. She wasn't sure if she could deal with all of this right now. She was going to need therapy by the time all of this was done.

"Cole...can I ask you something...and please, please don't take this the wrong way?"

He looked at her curiously. "What is it?"

Phoebe bit her lip.

"What...whatever happens...we're not going to let this..."

She was having a hard time forming the words.

He pressed his forehead against hers. "This isn't going to be easy, love," he said softly. "We may...disagree on things that should be done. But whatever happens...whatever happens...I still love you."

Phoebe nodded and held him to her.

"We knew that this wouldn't be easy, my love," she said softly. "But I love you, and you love me. That's not going to change. We're going to disagree on things in our lives and we may fight. The important thing is that we don't let that damage us."

Cole gave her a gentle kiss. "Your friends are going to hate me," he whispered. "They're going to think you're a fool. Can you handle that? Can you handle maybe...having to stop me?"

Phoebe kissed him back. "I can't control what they think and they cannot control what I feel. You have shown them over and over again how you feel about me. My god, you moved in with me so you could keep me safe." Phoebe swallowed. "If I have to fight you...I'll do what I must but I will NOT let anyone hurt you...understand me?"

Belthazor had Tara's attention from the moment he came in, knowing that what she had resigned herself to do would earn what might well be his undying enmity.

Seeing Phoebe's reaction now, Tara catches her eyes, and nods sadly. He did it, Phoebe. I'm so sorry.

Phoebe looks at Tara and she feels like the world is caving in around her. She is getting better at reading emotions of people close to her and she can tell that Tara isn't lying to her.

Oh god...oh god, Tara...

Shane sits at her desk, faded green eyes calmly watching the wordless interplay between Phoebe and Tara from behind her glasses. Reaching up to adjust her glasses, she stares silently at Tara for a few long beats until Tara meets her eyes.

Sitting up straight in her seat for once, Shane opens her notebook, pulls out her pen and starts doodling and scribbling on a blank page, though not idly. This seems to have almost a strange sense of purpose to it, a nearly imperceptible crease appearing between her eyebrows. To those people who don't know her, she just looks bored.
