Friday Ethics Class, 8-10am

Tara's eyes are shadowed as she greets the class, tension permeating her body.

"I'm sure you've all heard the announcement by now. Angelus has been accused of killing Kitty Pryde - which leaves us short one TA, but up an interesting Ethical question.

"Today we're going to discuss punishment for crimes done."

"Okay, here's your discussion topic: pick a class of punishment, and by that I mean corporal, capital, imprisonment, fines, behavioural rehabilitation.

"What are the ethical issues surrounding this style of punishment? In what circumstances is it appropriate?"

(defined: money can buy just about anything)

(defined: personality alteration by means of counselling, memory wipes, hypnosis, etc.)

"Let's pretend that you run the world. This world, that we inhabit together in all our diversity, even if your home world is very different.

"How do you a wrongdoer who is a danger to society and the people within it? Explain to me your plan for punishment and/or rehabilitation, and justify why you think it would be effective."

Phoebe sneaks into class and bundles into a corner on the floor so she can see and hear everything. She is flushed and her eyes are feverish. She doesn't look good and it's obvious she's sick --- hence her sitting on the floor and away from most of the other students. She's wrapped in what looks like a very thick comforter and there is a white kitten sitting in her lap. Every so often the kitten bats at her shoulder and hisses at her. It sounds like the kitten is chastizing her.

Kawalsky arrived early to talk to Tara. "Hey Professor. Just wanted to catch you before, y'know.. the chatter starts."

Callisto signs in and sits down in the nearest empty chair.

Belthazor walked into class looking pretty damn cranky. He started to take a seat then saw Phoebe huddled in the corner. Dammit, she must've snuck out of the room after he left. She'd been insisting she wanted to go to Ethics against doctor's orders, and he'd told her in no uncertain tone that she would do no such thing.

He walked over to Phoebe's side and crouched down beside her. "Phoebe, what are you doing here?" he said.

Phoebe looked up, guilt in her eyes. Okay, so she had sort of forgotten in her planning that her p~~ossessive~~rotective boyfriend was in this class with her. Blame the fever.

She bit her lip. "Please, Cole...let me stay? I'll stay right here and as soon as Tara's class is over, I'll go back to the dorm. It's just...I wanted to be here because if the conversations turn to blaming Angelus, I want it known what I think."

He sat down next to her. "Valkyrie has the right idea," he said, scritching the kitten's head. "You shouldn't be out of bed. You're not going to get better this way."

But he saw the stubbornness in her eyes and sighed. "All right, you can stay if Tara lets you," he said. "But the minute you look any sicker I'm shimmering you back to the room, no arguments." He dropped his voice and added, "You may want to rethink saying what you feel about Angelus. Lots of people think he's guilty now -- including Tara -- and they may be unpleasant to those who have differing opinions."

"Isn't personality alteration done against someone's will taking away their free will? Counseling's one thing. A unwanted memory wipe is entirely different."

Phoebe looked shocked. "Why would Tara think he's guilty? A few days ago she was agreeing with me when I said that it wasn't like him."

Phoebe felt some of her energy leave her at this news and she leaned against Cole. "Did she tell you that she thought he was guilty?"

Quinn signs in and takes her seat.

"I'm with him. It's creepy."

"Well, if you're one of the people that can afford to pay the fines, it rocks, because you do something wrong, fork over some cash and it's all taken care of. I can get behind that."

"Yeah," Cole said. "Right here in this very room when I stopped by to give her your pass. She said he did it and there was a witness."

Phoebe felt like she had been punched.

"How...how could she think that he would do that?"

Faith signs in.
