Friday Ethics Class, 8-10am

Tara's eyes are shadowed as she greets the class, tension permeating her body.

"I'm sure you've all heard the announcement by now. Angelus has been accused of killing Kitty Pryde - which leaves us short one TA, but up an interesting Ethical question.

"Today we're going to discuss punishment for crimes done."

Cole put his arm around Phoebe and sat silently for a moment. "And what if he did do it?" he finally asked.

Phoebe felt like she was going to throw up.

"Then...I have to choose between my friend whom I care about and respect ~~and OMG my soulmate, too?!! No!~~ ... and the very close friend that he may have murdered?"

"Do what you need to do," Cole said, gently touching his hand to her face. "Like I have to do what I have to do."

Phoebe nodded. She was really thinking that she shouldn't have come to class. She wasn't sure if she could deal with all of this right now. She was going to need therapy by the time all of this was done.

"Cole...can I ask you something...and please, please don't take this the wrong way?"

He looked at her curiously. "What is it?"

Phoebe bit her lip.

"What...whatever happens...we're not going to let this..."

She was having a hard time forming the words.

He pressed his forehead against hers. "This isn't going to be easy, love," he said softly. "We may...disagree on things that should be done. But whatever happens...whatever happens...I still love you."

Phoebe nodded and held him to her.

"We knew that this wouldn't be easy, my love," she said softly. "But I love you, and you love me. That's not going to change. We're going to disagree on things in our lives and we may fight. The important thing is that we don't let that damage us."

Cole gave her a gentle kiss. "Your friends are going to hate me," he whispered. "They're going to think you're a fool. Can you handle that? Can you handle maybe...having to stop me?"

Phoebe kissed him back. "I can't control what they think and they cannot control what I feel. You have shown them over and over again how you feel about me. My god, you moved in with me so you could keep me safe." Phoebe swallowed. "If I have to fight you...I'll do what I must but I will NOT let anyone hurt you...understand me?"

"I won't let anyone hurt you, either," he murmured. "Not if I can do anything to stop it. I just don't want any of them to hurt you...to get to me."

Phoebe frowned, her voice coming out very softly. "If they try to hurt me because they're mad at you, then I'll know where they stand and that they don't really care about me then, won't I?

"I don't think they'll hurt you physically," Cole said. "But they'll cut you out...maybe mock you. I just hate the thought of someone hurting you like that."

"They'll do what they do and they'll realize that they're going to fail in it." She looked sad. "I'm not looking forward to the treatment and yes, it'll hurt, but I'm not going to allow anyone to come inbetween you and I, nor am I about to stand aside and let anyone hurt you. You're mine just as much as I am yours." Phoebe closed her eyes and swallowed thickly.

He wanted so much to spare her the pain that was surely to come. "I wish we could just run away together," he said, "someplace where there's no one else. Just the two of us. No outside world to worry about."

"You have no idea how much I wish we could do that, Cole. I do." She sighed. "But we can't."

"I know," he said wistfully. "But I can still dream."

"I have that dream, too."

He pulled her close to him, just quietly holding her and stroking her hair as they listened to the class discussion.

Phoebe lay her head on his chest and then slipped down to rest her head in his lap as she came in and out of consciousness, trying to focus on the class discussion.

At the end of class, Belthazor put Valkyrie in Phoebe's lap and gently picked her up, then shimmered her back to their room and put her to bed.
