BWI Airport, Portalocity Lounge, Friday Morning [12/30]

Anakin still thought that getting sent off to school at some place he'd never heard of (and he'd been trying to memorize star maps practically since he was old enough to read) was one of Uncle Luke's stranger decisions. He'd graduated from the Academy, he wasn't a little kid any more, but as his uncle's apprentice he didn't have much room to argue. He'd much rather have been back in the thick of things if it were up to him, but it wasn't and Luke had sent him here, so he'd trust Luke's judgment even if he didn't understand it. Sending him to Dantooine with Aunt Mara had been weird at the time, too, and turned out to be a valuable learning experience.

The large Fandom High banner in the Portalocity lounge left little doubt that he was in the right place. With a tiny sigh, Anakin set his single bag down on the floor, tugged at the hem of his tunic. and brushed his fingertips against the hilt of the lightsaber hanging from his belt. That, at least, was something familiar in a completely unfamiliar environment.

He never liked waiting around for things to happen, but since he couldn't be home helping the Jedi with the war effort waiting for the shuttle to show up was the only thing to do right now. Well, that and finding out what the other new students would be like, and he supposed that part would happen soon enough.

Blinded by a radioactive waste, Matt Murdock had been given many abilities. Enhanced hearing, olfactory and taste being most of them. A unique echolocation ability to know what objects were around him was another.

However that still wouldn't help him find a lounge for Fandom High and had to resort to asking a flight attendent for assistance.

Thanking the flight attendent, Matt adjusted his sunglasses, unfolded his cane and then went through the pretense of using it as he entered the lounge. "Anyone else here for Fandom High?" he called out.

Hey, Jim had seen this place before. Okay, so it had been a few months ago, before he'd headed back home for a semester, but it was still kind of crazy that he was standing here again.

His surfer was propped up against the wall beside him, he had a bag slung over his shoulder, and there was a little pink blob sitting on his other shoulder, napping while Jim looked around at the new faces.

Yeah, he kind of missed boarding school.

"Me," Anakin called back. He took note of the cane, but didn't comment on it; even if he was curious he had Leia Organa Solo for a mother and knew better than to ask tactless questions. "Another new student?"

Everyone in this airport terminal was so overwhelmingly human so far. For a boy who'd grown up on Coruscant and spent huge chunks of his childhood raised by droids, it was a lot like stepping into a monochrome world. (And a low-tech one at that.)

So it was both the surfer and the napping pink blob that drew Anakin over out of curiosity.

"Hi," he told Jim, attention already drawn to the surfer. "What is that thing?"

"Hey, yeah," Jim said, by way of greeting as he pushed off the wall and approached the kid with the cane. "Me and a few others here, at least. So you're in the right place, unless they up and moved the lounge since the last time I was here."

Which was entirely possible.

"I'm Jim."

And the little pink blob on his shoulder was Morph, but Jim didn't want to wake the little guy up just yet. He was pretty tuckered out after the trip here from Montressor.

It had been a few semesters since Anakin had ~~traumatized the newbies~~ driven the shuttle, so he chalked up the bad feeling he had to the absolute stupidity of the other drivers on the road.

He, naturally, was an amazing driver, and they should all be so lucky to be driven in a school bus that could (and did, with terrifying regularity) go 110 miles an hour.

"Fandom High?" he called out, stepping into the lounge with his cloak swirling dramatically around his ankles.

"That would be me as well," Matt said as he thwacked his cane against a nearby chair. He held out his hand to reach for the chair before sitting down, playing the part of a blind kid rather well. "I'm Matt Murdock. Went to school up in New York before coming here."

"Oh, that?" Jim shot the new kid a grin as he pointed his thumb back to the thing propped up against the wall. "That's just my solar surfer. Kind of like a... uh... a skateboard or a surfboard, I guess, but it flies. I mean, when the daylight's good, anyhow."

Hence the 'solar' part. Yes, Jim.

"I'm Matt," he replied as he carefully took his seat. "And I was hoping that was the case. It wouldn't be the first time someone thought they were funny and left me in the wrong place. You've been here before?"

"New York?" Anakin echoed, confused. He'd have to study up on Earth geography pretty fast, wouldn't he? "I've never heard of it, but I haven't heard of a lot of places here anyway. This isn't even my galaxy."

He chuckled awkwardly. "I'm Anakin Solo. From Coruscant." Just because he didn't know much about geography here didn't necessarily mean that went both ways.

"Yeah," Jim replied, finding himself a new spot of wall to lean up against, still not too far from his surfer. "I had to leave just after the summer. I mean, it was going to just be a visit home, but some stuff came up. I just get back home and then Mom sends me back off to school. Go figure, huh?"

She probably figured he needed the break. Odds were, she was right.

"So, what brings you to Fandom High, Matt?"

Philosophical question: does Anakin Solo have to pay royalties to Anakin Skywalker for yelling NooOOOOooOOOOOOoOOOOOooOOOOOOOooOOOOOOOooooo, or would that just be an interdepartmental billing arrangement to avoid inheritance tax issues down the line?

Sure, tell a kid with Solo genes that something flies.

"Astral," Anakin breathed, his eyes lighting up as he looked over the surfer. "That looks like fun."

At least he remembered just in time that it would be rude not to introduce himself, so he cleared his throat. "Oh -- I'm Anakin. Hi."

Electroclash was here. She was not glad to be here, but she was here, uniform and all, a few bags at her feet and a sour look on her face. So far, she was not impressed with any of this.

She lit up a cigarette, prepared to glare at anyone who told her to put it out.

Hey, Jim didn't seem too bothered. Anybody who could appreciate his surfer had all the right in the world to forget to introduce himself right away, after all.

"Hey. I'm Jim." He even allowed himself a moment to smirk before nodding back to it. "Maybe when we get to the island, I can show you how to use it. I mean, it might be pretty cold this time of year, but that's what extra clothes are for, right?"

Probably?

Stacey was not a light packer, and some of her things had even been sent ahead. There were a few pieces of luggage at her feet, and while she was keeping a close eye on them (she was from New York, crime was a thing there), she was also checking out the people here, and maybe trying to gauge the boy situation.

"Really?" The fact that Anakin almost squealed with glee at the prospect was a pretty good hint of how young he really was. "Even if it's cold, it can't be as bad as hard vacuum, and that's an atmospheric craft, isn't it?"

"It is," Jim replied with a grin, almost bouncing in response to the almost-squeal. "Out where I'm from, we don't really have hard vacuum. Uh, even space has atmosphere, there, which I guess is weird for most people?"

He was learning!

"So you're not from Earth either? Or you're from an Earth with an advanced space program, or something?"

Anakin had been prepared to step forward and speak up when the shuttle driver arrived.

He probably should've had a bad feeling about this.

He had stepped forward, actually, and opened his mouth to say something that completely went out of his head as soon as he realized he'd come all this way to another galaxy and found another Jedi. One who looked awfully familiar, actually, if he was remembering those glimpses of old holos right.

So whatever he'd been about to say was promptly forgotten, and he just stared.

I hate you for the fact that I actually stopped to give that serious thought for like five minutes.

No, you don't.

"Galaxy?" Matt said tilting his head as if listening for something. "You're not pulling my leg are you?"
