BWI Airport, Portalocity Lounge, Friday Morning [12/30]

Anakin still thought that getting sent off to school at some place he'd never heard of (and he'd been trying to memorize star maps practically since he was old enough to read) was one of Uncle Luke's stranger decisions. He'd graduated from the Academy, he wasn't a little kid any more, but as his uncle's apprentice he didn't have much room to argue. He'd much rather have been back in the thick of things if it were up to him, but it wasn't and Luke had sent him here, so he'd trust Luke's judgment even if he didn't understand it. Sending him to Dantooine with Aunt Mara had been weird at the time, too, and turned out to be a valuable learning experience.

The large Fandom High banner in the Portalocity lounge left little doubt that he was in the right place. With a tiny sigh, Anakin set his single bag down on the floor, tugged at the hem of his tunic. and brushed his fingertips against the hilt of the lightsaber hanging from his belt. That, at least, was something familiar in a completely unfamiliar environment.

He never liked waiting around for things to happen, but since he couldn't be home helping the Jedi with the war effort waiting for the shuttle to show up was the only thing to do right now. Well, that and finding out what the other new students would be like, and he supposed that part would happen soon enough.

[OOC: You will wait for the OCD. *Jedi mind-tricks* Shuttle post is goooooooooo!]

"Hey, yeah," Jim said, by way of greeting as he pushed off the wall and approached the kid with the cane. "Me and a few others here, at least. So you're in the right place, unless they up and moved the lounge since the last time I was here."

Which was entirely possible.

"I'm Jim."

And the little pink blob on his shoulder was Morph, but Jim didn't want to wake the little guy up just yet. He was pretty tuckered out after the trip here from Montressor.

"I'm Matt," he replied as he carefully took his seat. "And I was hoping that was the case. It wouldn't be the first time someone thought they were funny and left me in the wrong place. You've been here before?"

"Yeah," Jim replied, finding himself a new spot of wall to lean up against, still not too far from his surfer. "I had to leave just after the summer. I mean, it was going to just be a visit home, but some stuff came up. I just get back home and then Mom sends me back off to school. Go figure, huh?"

She probably figured he needed the break. Odds were, she was right.

"So, what brings you to Fandom High, Matt?"

[identity profile] childhood-taunt.livejournal.com 2011-12-29 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"Got a scholarship," Matt replied. "Arranged by one of teachers back home. He thought taking me out of New York would be beneficial to my development."

[identity profile] answer2bheard.livejournal.com 2011-12-29 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm pretty sure that's what most people say when they send kids off to Fandom," Jim noted, smirking a little. "Fandom is definitely a learning experience, at least. You looking forward to it?"

[identity profile] childhood-taunt.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
"Not sure really," Matt admitted. "I've never been out of Hell's Kitchen before."

[identity profile] answer2bheard.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
"... Which is in New York, right?" Jim was kind of getting better at this Earth geography stuff, he was pretty sure. But sometimes he had to double-check. "Fandom's a pretty interesting place, at least. I mean, I don't think you'll have to worry about being bored or anything. Stuff was changing all the time when I was going to summer camp there."

Because the island had been moving around. It probably wasn't doing that any more.

[identity profile] childhood-taunt.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, I met one guy from another galaxy, so it sounds interesting," Matt said with a small smile. "Unless he was just pulling my leg."

[identity profile] answer2bheard.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
"He probably wasn't," Jim replied, grinning a little bit. "I'm not from Earth, either. You'll probably meet a couple of people from different worlds and stuff. It's not all that weird, after a while."

Really, it hadn't been all that weird to Jim in the first place. But then, Montressor got a lot of traffic.

[identity profile] childhood-taunt.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Huh."

Matt pursed his lips in thought.

"I'm beginning to wonder if this is the right school for a blind kid."

[identity profile] answer2bheard.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, it's the right school for pretty much everyone else who's gone there. I mean, I haven't heard any complaints. Why would it be any different for you?"

A beat.

"Most of the people there are really helpful?"

There! That helped!

[identity profile] childhood-taunt.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, that's good to know," Matt said leaning back in his chair. "Until I know my way around I'm going to have to depend on other people."

Which wasn't what Matt wanted but was part of his "blind kid" act.

[identity profile] answer2bheard.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, if there's any way I can help, let me know, okay? I mean, you'll get a big sibling when we get to the welcome picnic too, I'm sure, but I'm always happy to help where I can."

He was!

And Morph probably would be, too, when he woke up. Though his actual ability to be helpful was generally hampered by his gooey pink enthusiasm.

[identity profile] childhood-taunt.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
"Big sibling, huh?" Matt asked. "Well that should be helpful. And I appreciate the offer. I'll need to learn my way around the school so I won't walk into anything."

[identity profile] answer2bheard.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
"We can make a few trips around the school grounds once we get to the island, if you like," Jim offered. "I don't really have much unpacking to do, besides tossing my bag on my bed and putting my surfer away, so I'm pretty much free whenever you're up for it, actually."

[identity profile] childhood-taunt.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Surfer?" Matt asked. "You mean like a surfboard?"

[identity profile] answer2bheard.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
"More or less, yeah. Only mine's got a sail on it. And, uh, a rocket."

Because his surfboard was cooler than everyone else's, that's why.

[identity profile] childhood-taunt.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Matt paused again and tilted his head with a confused expression. "Seriously? A rocket and a sail? That sounds a bit extreme."

[identity profile] answer2bheard.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, they keep telling me that around here," Jim replied, shaking his head. "But, you know, back home skateboards are the weird thing. Nobody thinks twice about flying surfboards."

[identity profile] childhood-taunt.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, I've heard of people with surfboards with sails," Matt said with a thoughtful look. "No rockets though. Must be nice to go flying. Or do you just skate across the water?"

[identity profile] answer2bheard.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
"You know, I've never really tried it on the water? But there isn't really much water on Montressor in the first place." Which was unfortunate, because now Jim wanted to try it. "You don't suppose it's too cold this time of year to try with the ocean around Fandom, do you?"

No, Jim. That would be stupid.

[identity profile] childhood-taunt.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Well if you don't mind the cold and possibly catching hyperthermia, you might have fun," Matt said with a chuckle.

[identity profile] answer2bheard.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeaaah, maybe I'll pass on that one," Jim decided.

It wasn't really that difficult a decision, in retrospect.

"So, what kind of things do you do to pass the time, Matt?"

[identity profile] childhood-taunt.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, I study," Matt answered honestly. "Lots of reading usually."

There was also the martial arts training and running over rooftops but that's not something you bring into the conversation.

[identity profile] answer2bheard.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
"Reading's good," Jim decided. "The school has a pretty impressive library, actually. I can show you there, too."

Jim had missed the library.
