BWI Airport, Portalocity Lounge, Friday Morning [12/30]

Anakin still thought that getting sent off to school at some place he'd never heard of (and he'd been trying to memorize star maps practically since he was old enough to read) was one of Uncle Luke's stranger decisions. He'd graduated from the Academy, he wasn't a little kid any more, but as his uncle's apprentice he didn't have much room to argue. He'd much rather have been back in the thick of things if it were up to him, but it wasn't and Luke had sent him here, so he'd trust Luke's judgment even if he didn't understand it. Sending him to Dantooine with Aunt Mara had been weird at the time, too, and turned out to be a valuable learning experience.

The large Fandom High banner in the Portalocity lounge left little doubt that he was in the right place. With a tiny sigh, Anakin set his single bag down on the floor, tugged at the hem of his tunic. and brushed his fingertips against the hilt of the lightsaber hanging from his belt. That, at least, was something familiar in a completely unfamiliar environment.

He never liked waiting around for things to happen, but since he couldn't be home helping the Jedi with the war effort waiting for the shuttle to show up was the only thing to do right now. Well, that and finding out what the other new students would be like, and he supposed that part would happen soon enough.

[OOC: You will wait for the OCD. *Jedi mind-tricks* Shuttle post is goooooooooo!]

Dorothy shook her head. "Toto's a farm dog, we never really needed one. He's not a hunting dog that you keep like that. Which has gotten him into trouble more than once."

She opened the basket just enough so that Jim could see in.

"Say hello, Toto," she said with a smile. Toto obliged with a little woof.

"Hey, Toto," Jim murmured, leaning over to peer into the basket at the hairy little creature inside. He was kind of cute, really.

Morph, still asleep, murmured a squeaky little woof of his own before nuzzling into Jim's shoulder a little more.

"I suppose I should introduce myself, too," Dorothy said. She gave Jim a little curtsy. "I'm Dorothy, Dorothy Gale."

Her face twisted into a clever, wry smile. "I'm not sure if I should ask for your name or the name of your little friend first."

"We'll let him go first, since Toto got a turn before you did," Jim decided, diplomatically. "This sleepy little blob of goo is Morph. Don't let all the yawning fool you. I'm pretty sure he's just resting up because he heard there was going to be plenty of food at the picnic."

The muffled snicker from Jim's shoulder pretty much confirmed that.

"And I'm Jim Hawkins. Good to meet you, Dorothy."

"Hello Morph," Dorothy greeted with a little wave. "And hello to you too, Jim. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Are you here to go to the school, too?"

It seemed the most likely explanation, and it was something she was more familiar with than... well, everything that surrounded her right now.

"I am, yeah. I've actually been to the school before, for summer camp. It's a pretty cool place, once you get over the fact that it's still school."

Sitting still now was going to be way harder after a few character-building months in space. And being swallowed up by whatever that black... empty... voidy thing had been.

"You don't like school?" Dorothy said, thinking that almost silly. "This is the first chance I'll have to go to a big school at all, it's terribly exciting for me."

She looked it, too. "I'm already learning so much and I'm not even there. Though... right now I'm mainly learning how different this place is than home."

Understatement, but she kept a brave face on this sort of thing.

"Well, school isn't too bad, I guess," Jim replied, shrugging. "And this one is really different from the one I went to back home. What's your home like? You said something about a farm?"

Jim lived at the top of a cliff overlooking a massive mining operation, so he knew a little something about living in the middle of nowhere, at least.

Dorothy nodded. "In Kansas," she explained. "With my Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. It's... well, this place isn't like anything I saw back in Kansas. And it's not like anything I've seen in Oz, either."

That was the part that had caught her off guard. It wasn't even like the magical lands of Oz, which was what she was most used to in terms of the fantastic.

"Which you probably haven't heard of." Which she meant in an honest, non-hipster way.

"I kinda haven't," Jim agreed, smiling lopsidedly. "But that doesn't really mean much. I mean, I haven't heard of pretty much anywhere around here, anyhow. Kansas, too."

The perils of coming from outer spaaaace.

"Oh my," Dorothy said, not finding that unbelievable but fascinating. "Where are you from, then? Europe? The Indies? I've studied the maps so many times, I probably know where you're from."

She was in for a bit of a surprise, operating on the assumption there was only Earth and Oz.

And what a silly assumption that was!

"From Montressor, actually. It's a little mining planet out past the Coral Galaxy and Magellanic Cloud." A beat. "Which you've probably never heard of."

Said, naturally, in a not-at-all hipster sort of way.

Astronomy hadn't been one of the things Dorothy had found many books on, so she just got an amazed look on her face.

"Out in the stars?" she said. "I've not heard of those specifically, but I know what a galaxy is. And you came all this way just to come to school?"

That was terribly exciting. Not just that she was meeting someone from the stars, but also the possibility that more people like that would be at this school.

"Well, yeah," Jim replied, grinning a little. "Though, I mean, it wasn't such a big deal. Morph and I just took a portal this far, which is way faster than commissioning a ship or something."

And, frankly, he'd much rather travel by portal than risk Delbert hiring another crew for him that was mostly made up of pirates.

[identity profile] cant-be-helped.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"I took a portal too," Dorothy admitted. "I hadn't expected to, but then Ozma was in one of the train stations and I could hardly believe it."

She blushed a little. "Ozma is my friend," she explained. "The empress of all of Oz."

"Oh, hey. Royalty." Jim nodded a bit, and then laughed a little. "That's pretty cool. I think there's actually some royalty in the student body, too, so at least you'll be prepared for that, huh?"

Re: Wait for the Shuttle! [12/30]

[identity profile] cant-be-helped.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, I'm not royalty myself," Dorothy said. "Just... happened to be friends with one. They're not all that different, you know. They just get asked really big things of them, which is silly when you think that they actually aren't all that different."

She paused.

"Though Ozma is magical, so maybe there's something to that, actually."

"Magic, huh?" Jim grinned a little bit. "Yeah, there are a few people who can do magicky stuff on the island, too. That was always a little beyond me, though. I'm more a machines and technology kind of guy."

Weird, steampunky technology!

"I'm not much of anything, myself," Dorothy admitted with a pleasant smile. "Just a farm girl who likes to learn and help. Is there anyone like that at the school?"

Re: Wait for the Shuttle! [12/30]

[identity profile] answer2bheard.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"Farm girls? Or helpful people? I'm not so sure about the first, but there's plenty of the other kind, at least. That's something, right?"

"Well I don't mind being unique," Dorothy said, with a hint of pride in her voice. "But the other students being helpful is a very good sign. I hope they're all as friendly as you, too."
