Library, Wednesday [12/7]

Gabrielle wasn't sure she'd call what she did this morning opening the library, exactly, when people had been all but living in there for the past week and a half. Refreshing it, maybe, or no, that wasn't quite --

Semantic exercises were beside the point. The point was that she came in, straightened up as best she could without disturbing any stacks of books that might be research, and left a box of baked goods outside Belle's office door since gods knew she had basically been living in there.

She got a fresh pot of coffee going, prepped filter baskets of grounds for three more, and was ready to call the library good to go for the day.

"Yes." Natalie had been avoiding looking specifically at the sky while she'd been out. The clouds were unsettling. "Also I think people in town are missing now," she said, after a breath. "And I think the people behind it might have landed too."

"Why? What happened?" Isabel asked. In some ways, it wasn't surprising, but she'd been hoping they'd have more time.

Natalie sighed, brushing her bangs aside before crossing her arms over her chest. So much more body language than was usual for her.

"There was no one at the Perk but the doors were unlocked," she recounted. "Then these weird people showed up."

Considering the Perk provided the fuel that most of the island's residents were running on these days, it was definitely strange that no one was there. Although Isabel would have liked to just chalk it up to a scheduling error she'd been through enough weirdness in Fandom to know they'd probably reached the point where things really started to get bad.

So people were disappearing on island now. Great.

"What made them weird? What did they say?"

"They thought the note I wrote was fascinating because it was primitive," Natalie replied, finding some of her usual drier tone. It was easier than sounding terrified. "And they didn't seem to care that the staff was missing."

"Probably because they're responsible in some way or another," she replied. "But they called writing primitive? Huh, I wonder if that means they're some sort of higher intelligence or something. It might explain how they've done this. Some sort of superior tech or another."

"Maybe." It was not her favourite theory, but a likely one. "But we need to find out more before we can actually do anything."

"I know certain people that would be happy to beat more information out of them." Isabel might be one of them herself. But there was a tiny voice in her head urging caution. For the moment, she was going to listen to it.

"I'm one of those people." Except Natalie was more of a kick chick. She shook her head, though. "But there's something wrong about them. I'm not sure what, I didn't want to go that near them."

"They gave you a bad feeling?" Isabel nodded, having been a Fandom student for more then two years, she could respect that. "How'd you get away?"

Natalie couldn't help rolling her eyes, because it was kind of ridiculous. "Slipped out the back door while they were distracted by the note."

Seriously, what was up with that?

She really shouldn't snicker, but Isabel couldn't help it. "That is a bit anticlimactic in the grand scheme of things. Most of the time great escapes involve throwing and or shooting things. Still, it's good that you got away. People need to be warned."

And certain boyfriends might need to be locked in closets for a few days to keep them from being dumb.
