Library, Wednesday [12/7]

Gabrielle wasn't sure she'd call what she did this morning opening the library, exactly, when people had been all but living in there for the past week and a half. Refreshing it, maybe, or no, that wasn't quite --

Semantic exercises were beside the point. The point was that she came in, straightened up as best she could without disturbing any stacks of books that might be research, and left a box of baked goods outside Belle's office door since gods knew she had basically been living in there.

She got a fresh pot of coffee going, prepped filter baskets of grounds for three more, and was ready to call the library good to go for the day.

Raven retreated to a corner to keep trying to research, keeping her distance from everyone else. She had her cloak on and her hood pulled low to hide her eyes.

Chloe was in a corner, researching to the best of her ability. She was still upset about her losses, but was determined to do something to help.

Kitty was back today, but with a much better understanding of where they were on things than yesterday. She was poring over books, more on the technological side of things, and had a notebook in case there was something important she wanted to make sure got jotted down. The notebook was so far totally blank.

Jen was halfway dozing off on her keyboard, but she'd essentially been living in the library for days herself.

The smell of fresh-brewed coffee got her to wake up enough to go over and help herself to some, and no, she wasn't going to apologize for the amount of sugar she put in it. Shut up, she needed that.

Lex had his laptop with him for cross-referencing as he carefully paged through one dusty book after another.

"Take a break," Scully suggested, watching Jen. She looked better than yesterday, but then, falling asleep after days awake would do that. "You'll be fresher when you come back."

"The last break I took got me a good look at what's left of the sky," Jen answered grimly. She hadn't liked that; it had been too much like the storm of time holes opening up over Silver Hills, which had been, go figure, another barely-thwarted-apocalypse situation. "The next break can wait until after we find a solution."

Scully gave her sympathetic look, and said mildly, "If you start walking into walls, I'll pull medical prerogative and ask Belle if I can sedate you. Just saying."

Ender was in the library with his nose in a book.

He'd managed to get two hours of sleep last night, mostly thanks to Ben's interference. So at least he was awake.

Wes, Katie, Trip, and Lucas would have loved to have had that option once; Jen had gone off after an insane cyborg in a revenge-driven fit while beaten half to a pulp.

"Trust me," she said, more impatient sounding than she meant to be but she was tired, "I know my limits. I've been doing this for a long time. If I do get to that point, though . . . my friends would probably thank you for it if they still existed."

Yeah, like she'd never heard that from Claudia, or Mulder for that matter. "Mine who were off-island would tell you to do as I say, not as I do... but I'll take your word for it for now." She rubbed her eyes. "Scully, by the way."

It was a thing with stubborn heroic types.

"Jen Scotts, class of 2009," she answered with a slight nod. "And believe me, researching beats avoiding saber-toothed tigers and mastodons in the Ice Age thanks to one of Portalocity's screwups . . . though in retrospect I can't blame them quite as much for that, can I?"

"Sadly, no," Scully said, her mouth quirking sideways. "I loathed Antarctica. But I'm still sorry it's gone." She sighed. "Although I keep wondering if we'd realized what was happening sooner..."

Marshall had moved beyond the books containing information on wormholes and started grabbing anything on weird science that he could find.

It... still wasn't helping much.

Jen shook her head vehemently. "The what-ifs will only drive you crazy, and this thing took out as many worlds with highly advanced technology as it did primitive ones. I'm not sure any kind of early warning would have done us any good."

"True." Scully grimaced, and glared down at her book. "I've been looking into dark matter and dark energy, and I'd think the mechanism of what's out there would connect to those, but... we just don't know enough about them to say anything definitive."

Isabel alternated between reading whatever she could get her hands on and standing at one of the windows staring out at the sky. After what had happened that morning, she wondered just how much longer the island could hold out.

Jen took a gulp of coffee and sighed. "We don't have enough to say anything definitive at all," she put in, frustrated. (As a research technician and a police officer, this annoyed her doubly.) "Though I have anecdotal evidence that shooting blasters at that cloud does nothing."

"It took a friend whose hand I was holding as we crossed the Causeway," Scully said quietly. "It's random. I should have been taken too."

When she wasn't in class or off doing other things, Lady Ghanima could be found in the library today.

At this particular moment, she was reading a set of scrolls written in Sanskrit, taking notes in French so she could go over them later with Leto.
