Library, Wednesday [12/7]

Gabrielle wasn't sure she'd call what she did this morning opening the library, exactly, when people had been all but living in there for the past week and a half. Refreshing it, maybe, or no, that wasn't quite --

Semantic exercises were beside the point. The point was that she came in, straightened up as best she could without disturbing any stacks of books that might be research, and left a box of baked goods outside Belle's office door since gods knew she had basically been living in there.

She got a fresh pot of coffee going, prepped filter baskets of grounds for three more, and was ready to call the library good to go for the day.

It was a thing with stubborn heroic types.

"Jen Scotts, class of 2009," she answered with a slight nod. "And believe me, researching beats avoiding saber-toothed tigers and mastodons in the Ice Age thanks to one of Portalocity's screwups . . . though in retrospect I can't blame them quite as much for that, can I?"

"Sadly, no," Scully said, her mouth quirking sideways. "I loathed Antarctica. But I'm still sorry it's gone." She sighed. "Although I keep wondering if we'd realized what was happening sooner..."

Jen shook her head vehemently. "The what-ifs will only drive you crazy, and this thing took out as many worlds with highly advanced technology as it did primitive ones. I'm not sure any kind of early warning would have done us any good."

"True." Scully grimaced, and glared down at her book. "I've been looking into dark matter and dark energy, and I'd think the mechanism of what's out there would connect to those, but... we just don't know enough about them to say anything definitive."

Jen took a gulp of coffee and sighed. "We don't have enough to say anything definitive at all," she put in, frustrated. (As a research technician and a police officer, this annoyed her doubly.) "Though I have anecdotal evidence that shooting blasters at that cloud does nothing."

"It took a friend whose hand I was holding as we crossed the Causeway," Scully said quietly. "It's random. I should have been taken too."
