Aesthetics of Badassery [Monday, Period One]

"Morning, class," Bond began, having told the class to meet him at J,GoBs this morning, where pretty much every possible kind of sticky, sweet, or savory breakfast pastry waited for them. Also pie. Which totally made it a balanced breakfast there. "Given how stressful Parent's Weekend usually is, I felt that it would be best if we focused on a subtler kind of badassery today, building on the idea of developing your palates more."

In other words, comfort food was badass and don't try to disagree with Bond there.

He really felt the need to point out the obvious, didn't he? Caroline sighed, finding the strength not to be sarcastic with him. "Yes, Bobby, because I'm upset. Are you going to turn into a puppy again to make me feel better?"

Oh God, Jake would kill him for that.

"If I could, I would?" Bobby offered. "But I don't think that kind of thing happens when it's convenient." He looked down, scuffing his toe. "I'm sorry you're upset. I know I can't really help with anything, but I'm here if there's anything I can do?"

It was kind of awful how nice he was being to her and how completely undeserving Caroline felt. She sighed, resting her cheek against her hand as she leaned against the table. "You're sweet. I honestly don't think anyone can help, but I will take any distractions you've got."

Well crap, he hadn't actually had a plan. "Well, I could show you how to play Mission to Mars, but I don't think that's probably your thing so much," Bobby said thoughtfully.

"Is that like, some astronaut game?" Caroline checked, brows lifting in concerned curiosity. Seriously, this kid needed to do something to kill the nerd vibe. But hey, points for distraction!

"Yes!" he answered, pleased that she asked. "You have to plan the mission and try to bring the right stuff? And then actually fly the ship and land it perfectly or you lose some of your supplies or destroy the mission entirely."

"Oh wow," Caroline didn't know how to respond to that positively. "I feel bad it's not my thing, but then, I don't know if anyone's really into my things, either."

"I'll go shopping with you? My mom gave me money because some of my pants are too short," Bobby said.

"Oh my God, please, let's do that!" Caroline said quickly, totally interested in getting out of Fandom for a few hours of clothes trying on and modeling and buying. "One thing, you have to promise to at least try on everything I say."

"Girls are mean," he said, thinking this was a perfectly valid explanation. "I'd look terrible in a dress. Everything else is cool though. I promise." This type of thing had to be shaken on, duh.

Such a weird kid. Caroline took his hand, giving it a shake and half-smiling at him before returning to her destroyed breakfast treat. "So tell me about your weekend. Your mom show?"

"Yeah, she did. But she was more worried about Jack's college applications than visiting our teachers for once so she didn't get mad about the badass class and make us go home," Bobby explained, feeling quite proud about getting a smile.

"It's good she didn't meet me, I seem to have that effect on friends and family." Thanks Sam and Bran. "Sorry, I think some of my bitter slipped out! Where's Jack going to school?" Probably somewhere awesome where there were no vampires to ruin things.

He frowned. "I don't think you would," Bobby said. "My mom's not..." well, yes, she was. "Anyway, I wanted you to meet her, but I didn't think Sunday would be good? I don't know where Jack's going. Every time I ask, he gets snappy."

"Yeah, I was kind of a mess." Right, because ripping pastries to shreds while sneaking glances at your - was she still allowed to think of him as her boyfriend? - was super healthy. "Maybe he's just worried about leaving you behind."

Bobby was not going to comment about Caroline's current mess. That seemed like the road to death. He would edge around a little so Jake was more to his back so she could at least feel more disguised about those glances.

"Maybe," he said doubtfully. "I think he's more worried about scholarships. He knows I'm a lot better about taking care of myself!"

"You'll stay here even when he graduates, right?" Caroline checked. "Or are you going to pull one of those smart kid graduates at fifteen things?"

Bobby shrugged. "I'm not smart enough to graduate early. And I don't know if Mom'd be okay with me staying here without Jack."

"That sucks," Caroline decided. "Your mom must keep you on a pretty tight leash." She recalled there being some lameness about the lack of pop culture in his life.

He opened his mouth to protest then shrugged again. "She just wants what's best for us. She'd rather us both go to the college she teaches at but...I don't think that's going to happen."

"Would you want to go to a college your mom teaches at?" Bobby asked. Which wasn't even getting to the part where she was a pretty controversial figure on the campus. A year ago, he'd've been all for this plan. Not so much anymore. "It'd be weird to live at home again."

"Seriously," Caroline agreed. And Bobby hadn't even spent the last five months sleeping with someone. "I really don't look forward to that ever happening. But at least your mom like, tries. And probably cares."
