Aesthetics of Badassery [Monday, Period One]

"Morning, class," Bond began, having told the class to meet him at J,GoBs this morning, where pretty much every possible kind of sticky, sweet, or savory breakfast pastry waited for them. Also pie. Which totally made it a balanced breakfast there. "Given how stressful Parent's Weekend usually is, I felt that it would be best if we focused on a subtler kind of badassery today, building on the idea of developing your palates more."

In other words, comfort food was badass and don't try to disagree with Bond there.

"Oh my God, please, let's do that!" Caroline said quickly, totally interested in getting out of Fandom for a few hours of clothes trying on and modeling and buying. "One thing, you have to promise to at least try on everything I say."

Bobby eyed her a little suspiciously. "No girl clothes, and I'll promise."

"Oh please, like I want to see you prancing around in a dress," she replied, rolling her eyes at him.

"Girls are mean," he said, thinking this was a perfectly valid explanation. "I'd look terrible in a dress. Everything else is cool though. I promise." This type of thing had to be shaken on, duh.

Such a weird kid. Caroline took his hand, giving it a shake and half-smiling at him before returning to her destroyed breakfast treat. "So tell me about your weekend. Your mom show?"

"Yeah, she did. But she was more worried about Jack's college applications than visiting our teachers for once so she didn't get mad about the badass class and make us go home," Bobby explained, feeling quite proud about getting a smile.

"It's good she didn't meet me, I seem to have that effect on friends and family." Thanks Sam and Bran. "Sorry, I think some of my bitter slipped out! Where's Jack going to school?" Probably somewhere awesome where there were no vampires to ruin things.

He frowned. "I don't think you would," Bobby said. "My mom's not..." well, yes, she was. "Anyway, I wanted you to meet her, but I didn't think Sunday would be good? I don't know where Jack's going. Every time I ask, he gets snappy."

"Yeah, I was kind of a mess." Right, because ripping pastries to shreds while sneaking glances at your - was she still allowed to think of him as her boyfriend? - was super healthy. "Maybe he's just worried about leaving you behind."

Bobby was not going to comment about Caroline's current mess. That seemed like the road to death. He would edge around a little so Jake was more to his back so she could at least feel more disguised about those glances.

"Maybe," he said doubtfully. "I think he's more worried about scholarships. He knows I'm a lot better about taking care of myself!"

"You'll stay here even when he graduates, right?" Caroline checked. "Or are you going to pull one of those smart kid graduates at fifteen things?"

Bobby shrugged. "I'm not smart enough to graduate early. And I don't know if Mom'd be okay with me staying here without Jack."

"That sucks," Caroline decided. "Your mom must keep you on a pretty tight leash." She recalled there being some lameness about the lack of pop culture in his life.

He opened his mouth to protest then shrugged again. "She just wants what's best for us. She'd rather us both go to the college she teaches at but...I don't think that's going to happen."

"Do you guys not like her school or something?" Caroline wondered, glad for the excuse to question Bobby and not have to keep shredding pastries.

"Would you want to go to a college your mom teaches at?" Bobby asked. Which wasn't even getting to the part where she was a pretty controversial figure on the campus. A year ago, he'd've been all for this plan. Not so much anymore. "It'd be weird to live at home again."

"Seriously," Caroline agreed. And Bobby hadn't even spent the last five months sleeping with someone. "I really don't look forward to that ever happening. But at least your mom like, tries. And probably cares."

He frowned a little. "You don't think your mom cares?"

"Your mom showed up this weekend, right?" Caroline checked. "Every time I even attempt to talk to mine, we fight. Cue her being too busy to come see my school, not that I should really let her anyway."

...he was not going to be able to try to find the bright side on this one. "I'm sorry."

"You so should not be sorry," she told him, picking up a cup of coffee and peering into it. "It's cool."

Also, she failed at paying attention to how much her mother did care.

"Not really," Bobby decided. "It kind of seems like everything's uncool right now." And rubbing it in was the best way to help that! "I don't approve."

"Because you're not an ass," she told him, snorting a bit. "You just caught me like, right in the middle of rock bottom. I'll be me again next week." Or so she could hope.

"I mean - I hope so too," he said, trying to figure out how to say 'if you aren't, you don't have to pretend.' "But if things aren't better, you don't have to pretend or anything?"

Just saying it worked.

"You're funny, Bobby," she said, shaking her head.
