Open Classroom: Journalism

Sometime early morning on Saturday, Krycek reached the Journalism classroom to open it for students and parents to visit.

Around the room are several projects with attention grabbing posters and fliers.

Say Yes to Body Art! [Warning: Some disturbing imagery]

Say Yes to Unprotected Sex!

Say Yes to Vampires!

Say Yes to Student Government Accountability!

Say Yes to Celine Dion!

Say Yes to Smoking! [Warning: Also disturbing, maybe.]

The large screens up at the head of the class are set up to display various images, some of them of the students during classtime, some of them current news footage - all are turned to a very low volume so as to allow conversation at reasonable levels.

Then he sits down at his group's project to wait, occasionally thwapping candy teeth into submission.

[ooc: You may want to have a member of your group comment below if they are sitting with your project in order to answer questions. Also, if you have an updated link or one you'd rather have linked to for your project, please let me know.]

John trundles his group's project (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomhighdorms/222635.html#cutid1) into the room.

"I've seen too much of Celine Dion lately," he mumbles.

Kat notices the posters, and can't resist. "Ah," she says, crossing her arms and fixing John with her best devious smirk. "So it's your fault they ended up having to outlaw the use of Celine Dion music as an interrogation device in 2025, as cruel and unusual punishment."

[identity profile] whitedeathpod.livejournal.com 2005-10-29 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
John seems a bit surprised and glances at his project. "Well, in order for me to answer that question, I need to ask one of my own. Did using her music work? Or did it do more harm then good?"

[identity profile] spdemergency.livejournal.com 2005-10-29 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm kidding. Mostly. Though there was an incident in 2019 where the Troobian Empire tried to steal a copy of her complete works, so there has to be a sinister side to it all."

[identity profile] whitedeathpod.livejournal.com 2005-10-29 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"The Tuba Empire?" John frowns and sends another glance towards his project. "Well, this is more a joke too. Just something funny to get away from the serious side of it all." John offers her a CD. "Want one? (http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/9786/ist2270299blankcdcover7lo.jpg) They're free!"

[identity profile] spdemergency.livejournal.com 2005-10-29 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Why not? Just as long as I never let Boom get his hands on it, or we'll all regret it." Kat takes the CD and scrutinizes it. "As sung by John Crichton, hmm? Would that be you by any chance?"

[identity profile] whitedeathpod.livejournal.com 2005-10-29 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yes, that's me," John grins and offers her his hand. "And you are?"

[identity profile] spdemergency.livejournal.com 2005-10-29 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Kat takes the proferred hand and shakes it with a smile. "Katherine Manx, Research and Development for Space Patrol Delta. I'm supposed to be here for Bridge Carson this weekend, but I haven't been able to find him."

Logan joins Krycek at the Vampires table. "Hey," he says.

"Which is why I'm hiding out here," Logan says. "How about you? Any family in town?"

"But students, that's okay?" Logan raises an eyebrow at Krycek. "Nah, they're fine." He picks out two sets of teeth and places the on the table next to each other. He lets go and watches the teeth skitter across the table.

Logan grins. "Well, the parents could stand to learn a little, too," he says

Chihaya constantly arranges and rearranges his display for their Journalism Project (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomhighdorms/223198.html) and waits patiently to answer questions.

Having no idea where Delirium is this weekend.. but with all the craziness around, suspects she's here somewhere, Duce drags her father in to the Journalism room to show off her project and answer questions anyone might have about it.

[identity profile] notwithmybaby.livejournal.com 2005-10-30 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"And this, 'Say Yes to Body Art' project is yours? Might I ask it's purpose? You clearly spent a great deal of time on it, but why?

[identity profile] medusae-x.livejournal.com 2005-10-31 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
"It's Combat Journalism, Daddy," she says patiently. Noticing the dark look on her father's face, she corrects the misassumption, "It means using our projects to get a reaction from people, not covering fighting of any kind. There are only so many things that get a reaction out of teenagers, and we didn't want to do anything.. vulgar." She waves a hand delicately, indicating some of the other projects. "Tattoos are traditional in many Eastern cultures, and one of our professors, Abe no Seimei, endorsed our project and helped us learn about the tattoo arts in feudal Japan. It was quite educational."

[identity profile] notwithmybaby.livejournal.com 2005-10-31 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Seeing some of the other projects, Nikolos has to admit that Autumn's was really rather tame.

"Well, it certainly isn't as vulgar as unprotected sex, or as frivolous as Celine Dion," he says pleased that his daughter chose something with some relevancy, "Not that I'm advocating you getting a tattoo mind you. Did you acheive your goal? Are students commenting on it in the halls?

[identity profile] medusae-x.livejournal.com 2005-10-31 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
She's so very glad she's always worn socks around her father..

"There have been some confused looks and some people obviously squicked out by the flier, but, that's as it should be," Duce says solemnly, "Drugs are very bad. We'd rather scare them with pictures of the consequences than have them lied to by pushers and wind up with the consequences. That would be a sad and tragic waste of a life."

[identity profile] notwithmybaby.livejournal.com 2005-10-31 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
"and how did you ever come up with the idea in the first place? It's clearly quite different from what others were thinking," Nikolos asks.

[identity profile] medusae-x.livejournal.com 2005-10-31 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
"We work for a tattoo artist, Pater. We see a lot of students coming in, trying to get tattoos to do that whole shock-and-offend thing." At his glower, she adds, "Red would never dream of giving a minor a tattoo without their parent's express, written consent, Daddy. But then we thought.. so many teenagers try drugs as a way to rebel and act out and be all.. what's a good word for it.. edgy. We'd rather have them needling their parents about getting a tattoo, or even getting an illicit one that they can show off to their friends, than every trying drugs. If they feel they have to act out and be all tough-guy.. there are safer ways to do it than drugs. With tattoos being fairly inexpensive, even safe, sterile ones are affordable. They're also removable.. there's time-release dye, so some of them just fade into nothingness, and there's laser removal." She pauses, "No pun intended on the needling thing."

[identity profile] notwithmybaby.livejournal.com 2005-10-31 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Nikolos can't say he condones tattoos, but his daughter makes an excellent point, which really is better than actually being right in some cases.

"That's an excellent arguement Dree. It doesn't gloss over the obvious negativities towards tattos and still addresses the concern over needles in a positive way. You know, I think I like this school," he tells her.

"Now tell me about the competition, and why your projects better," he says, winking.
