Open Classroom: Journalism

Sometime early morning on Saturday, Krycek reached the Journalism classroom to open it for students and parents to visit.

Around the room are several projects with attention grabbing posters and fliers.

Say Yes to Body Art! [Warning: Some disturbing imagery]

Say Yes to Unprotected Sex!

Say Yes to Vampires!

Say Yes to Student Government Accountability!

Say Yes to Celine Dion!

Say Yes to Smoking! [Warning: Also disturbing, maybe.]

The large screens up at the head of the class are set up to display various images, some of them of the students during classtime, some of them current news footage - all are turned to a very low volume so as to allow conversation at reasonable levels.

Then he sits down at his group's project to wait, occasionally thwapping candy teeth into submission.

[ooc: You may want to have a member of your group comment below if they are sitting with your project in order to answer questions. Also, if you have an updated link or one you'd rather have linked to for your project, please let me know.]

"We work for a tattoo artist, Pater. We see a lot of students coming in, trying to get tattoos to do that whole shock-and-offend thing." At his glower, she adds, "Red would never dream of giving a minor a tattoo without their parent's express, written consent, Daddy. But then we thought.. so many teenagers try drugs as a way to rebel and act out and be all.. what's a good word for it.. edgy. We'd rather have them needling their parents about getting a tattoo, or even getting an illicit one that they can show off to their friends, than every trying drugs. If they feel they have to act out and be all tough-guy.. there are safer ways to do it than drugs. With tattoos being fairly inexpensive, even safe, sterile ones are affordable. They're also removable.. there's time-release dye, so some of them just fade into nothingness, and there's laser removal." She pauses, "No pun intended on the needling thing."

Nikolos can't say he condones tattoos, but his daughter makes an excellent point, which really is better than actually being right in some cases.

"That's an excellent arguement Dree. It doesn't gloss over the obvious negativities towards tattos and still addresses the concern over needles in a positive way. You know, I think I like this school," he tells her.

"Now tell me about the competition, and why your projects better," he says, winking.

"In order of appearance.." She gestures around the room, "Say Yes to Unprotected Sex - obviously a reverse-psychology parody, but it implies that safe sex is perfectly ok, and really, they should be giving a more positive message about abstinence, responsibility, and accountability instead of encouraging teenagers to fornicate." Her voice couldn't be more angelically innocent if it were coming from Chihaya's throat.

"Say Yes to Vampires - well, that's obviously a backlash about all the brouhaha paranoia directed at Angelus.. he's the boy in the middle picture, with the puppy, earlier this year. You remember, we called you about that. However, as much as we like Angelus, and for all that his .. condition.. isn't his fault, the posters almost look like they're encouraging other people to become soulless bloodsuckers and," she teases her father, "the world has enough lawyers as it is! Hee! Anyway.. another thing we don't really believe impressionable, impulsive teenagers should be encouraged to pursue. Vampirisim.. fatal and non-refundable."

"Say Yes to Student Government Responsibility - they make a very good point, the StuCo should be responsible for their positions now that they've been elected to them.. but since when, in the history of the world, has any elected official ever lived up to their campaign promises?" She muses for a moment and adds hastilly, "And do not bring up either Hitler or President Carter. One promised to be a tyrant and the other we're pretty sure is a saint in human form, so they're both off the ballot for this."

"Say Yes to Celine Dion - really, Pater - Celine Dion? Would you like a point by point bulletin on how she's the female version of Michael Bolton with slightly better hair? No? Thought not."

"Say Yes to Smoking - obviously going for the reverse psychology angle, and," she admits, "this one is our only real competition. They make a very good argument for the consequences of smoking, however, the pictures are so large, and so disgusting, people can see the image long before they can read the words, and they have time to avert their eyes before reading the message at all - and are likely to blow it off, since if they're addicted to nicotine, they're going to be defensive and in denial anyway." She muses, "If we were going to do that campaign, we would've made the 'Say Yes' really big right in the middle, and down one side, done all the rumours teenagers hear or reasons they give for smoking, and down the right side, made a list of all the consequences of tobacco use with tiny thumbnails pictures of the effects." She adds, "Also, the jaw-cancer picture? Where the guy's missing his lower jaw? That's from chewing tobacco, not smoking."

"So.. ours conveys a positive message, doesn't encourage anything irreversable, is more artistically pleasing, and doesn't promote an aging Las Vegas performer."

"I agree with the aesthetic arguement right away, though seeing as it is a shock assignment that might not be the deal breaker it might normally be. Of course, seeing as you managed to say something shocking and useful at the same time I think your project has a leg up on the competition. Of course, I might be biased." Nikolos says smiling at her.

"Just a tad, but that's ok, we love you anyway." Duce grins at her father, and hails Alex who is busy right now at the Halloween Party, so forgive if slow/no poses, "Alex? When you have a minute, come meet Daddy."

Nikolos glares at the boy Autumn is speaking to. "And he would be?"

[identity profile] medusae-x.livejournal.com 2005-10-31 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
"Another of our friends that you wanted to meet?" The sweetness in her voice is such that one almost expects a rain of sugar forthwith.

"Are you two very close then?" he asks looking the boy over, he isn't impressed with what he sees.

[identity profile] medusae-x.livejournal.com 2005-10-31 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
"He's probably my closest male friend," Duce answers, honestly enthusiastically, "You'll like him! He's very nice."

Nikolos aready hates him a little, shifty rat-like eyes, too thin mouth, it wasn't a face to be trusted.

"Any friend of yours Dree darling, is some one worth meeting.
