Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

The food? Still there. The school? Still standing. Students? Still mingling.

Ahhhh. What fun this weekend was for us all. WHAT FUN. And this time it was actually the good weather for shirt removing!

Karla ~~WHOSE MUN HAS INTERNET AGAIN, YAY!!!~~ had needed some time away from the picnic after meeting her new little sibling. So after going back to her room to 'meditate' (there had been a lot of swearing involved in that meditation) and rein in her temper, Karla made her way back out to the picnic.

No more surprises, Fandom. Okay? Just...no more.

Raven had her cloak wrapped around her for warmth, and she was warmed even more to see Karla. "Karla, you are back," she said, pleased to see her. "Where were you?"

Karla leaned over to hug Raven. She could imagine how her friend must be feeling now--but didn't have to. Yay, psychic scents?

"Hawaii," she replied. "Warren took me for our birthday. I think he knew I needed some time away."

From the island, from her friends leaving, from Triela's imminent death...

Raven was trying to keep her emotions carefully tucked behind her shields, though she knew Karla could read her more easily than most. She accepted the hug gratefully. "I tried to find you," she murmured. "But I am glad you were able to leave and have a good time. You deserved it."

Even with shields, it was a time of goodbyes and Raven was Raven. Not a hard guess.

"I'm sorry I wasn't around for you," Karla said, squeezing tightly. "I can only imagine how difficult your goodbye with Jono must have been. I'm so sorry, darling."

Ouch. She couldn't keep her composure when Karla brought up that.

"He...he did not say goodbye," she said, tears springing to her eyes. "He just left."

Karla stiffened and fought down a rising surge of temper. It would just upset Raven further. "No phone c--" okay, that was a stupid question, "--no note, no nothing?!"

Raven sniffled and shook her head. She didn't want to break down again in the middle of the picnic. "I knew he had to leave by the end of the week, but he did not tell me when. And then he was just gone. Why would he do that?"

Karla...was not going to mention their goodbye burger at the bar. Nope. But she was going to add an extra tic to the 'kick Jono's ass' column.

"Maybe he had to leave early?" Karla tried, groping for an answer that wasn't 'because he's a total jackass.' "There was an emergency or something that required his presence immediately?"

Or, you know, total jackass.

"He must have had a good reason," Raven said, rubbing the side of her hand against her eyes to stop the tears from falling. "He would not hurt me like this on purpose. I had wanted his last night here to be special."

"Have you tried to contact him?" Karla asked, ever-logical. "I know he can't talk on the phone, but his fingers aren't broken. A text or an email should be work fine."

Karla didn't really understand just how much technology had changed over the past twenty-odd years.

"I could try, if you wanted? Just to make sure he's okay?"

Though Jono had better hope he was in the middle of danger when Karla called. Because if he wasn't, he would be.

"I have not," Raven admitted. She'd been too busy moping all day yesterday. "I kept thinking he only left to do something on the mainland before he truly left Fandom, and I waited for him to come back yesterday. But he never did."

And she wasn't exactly sure how to get in touch with him quickly since he was technically in the past now. She could teleport, but without warning that could be awkward.

Psssht. Like Karla was worried about awkward! She would suggest dropping in anyway and if Jono didn't like it, maybe he should learn how to say goodbye to people.

"We can figure it out," Karla promised warmly. "I'm sure he's fine, but something major came up and he was needed. He sounded like he was planning on taking his responsibilities seriously when he went back to Massachusetts, I bet this is somehow related."

"You are right," Raven said, trying to convince herself. "It must have been something like that. And he will send word to me soon that he is all right."

Or she was going to sic Ariel on him, too. And Sookie. And Anakin.

Karla would take all of the chewy beers and dump them on the ground in front of him. Then eat bacon and not link.

"Let's not worry for now," Karla soothed. "Tomorrow or Monday, we'll catch up with him and make sure all is well."

And then probably kick him.

"So, do you have a little sib this term?" she asked, nudging the topic along in an attempt to distract Raven. "I'm probably going to drown my in the pool."

HE DESERVED IT.

"I do," Raven said, seizing the subject change gratefully. "I wanted to speak to you of her, in fact. She said she has met you already, and she is from your world. Her name is Surreal, but she did not know of Kaeleer. She thought it was a child's story. But her name is the same as Saetan's, so I do not understand."

"I guess most people in Terreille--what?!?" Karla hadn't gotten her last name out of Surreal. "What do you mean, her name is the same as Uncle Saetan's?"

"Surreal SaDiablo," Raven said, concerned by the reaction. "That is what the notice the office sent me about my little sibling said. Are they related?"

"No!"

By that, Karla meant, she didn't think so, but couldn't say for certain.

"How can they be?! I mean...I mean..."

Okay, so she didn't have any good reasons why they couldn't be. But it was true, dammit!

"Perhaps you should ask your uncle if he is familiar with her?" Raven said. "When she did not know of Kaeleer, I thought it best to speak to her no more of your home. I did not want to say the wrong thing."

And, oh, screw up anyone's timeline.

Wooooord. Karla was finally going to understand the Skywalkers' continued apprehension about who each new crop of newbies might bring.

"After the war, Kaeleer closed its borders to Terreille," Karla murmured absently. "After fifty-thousand years, most Terreillians think the Shadow Realm is a myth. But, yes. I'm going to have to write home and ask Uncle Saetan about her."

She wasn't Lucivar's get, she knew that. Perhaps some descendant of Mephis's?

"You do not think she is a danger to you, do you?" Raven said. Karla's world confused her sometimes, and she wasn't entirely certain who was to be trusted.

Karla didn't answer immediately, thinking instead about the violent way that Surreal had reacted when she'd pointed to her Jewel. "I...don't know," she admitted. "I outrank her, Jewel-wise, but..."

But she'd seen how fast Surreal was with a knife. And there was no arguing that Terreille was dangerous.

"I think she could be dangerous," she said finally. "Maybe not specifically to me? But just because an Arcerian cat doesn't mean me any personal ill-will doesn't mean I want to be in his hunting range when he's hungry."

"She may be assigned as my little sister, but you are my true family," Raven said. "If she ever were to intend you harm, I would not let her get away with it."

She'd be meeting a demon up close and personal. But Raven hoped it would never come to that, and that Surreal would be harmless.

Karla had to smile about that and give Raven another hug. "She's from Terrielle, which means we have no idea what to expect, really. She doesn't seem particularly fond of me right now, but I'm hoping that just manifests as avoidance," she admitted. "I'd tell you to be kind to her until she gives us reason to be otherwise, but it's not like I really need to."

Raven was the kind one. Karla was...the other one.
