Fighting With Powers [Monday, Fourth Period]

Finals. Finally.

Though, honestly, Max had rather enjoyed this semester. Fandom weirdness aside, he'd had a good group of students, and they'd seemed to learn something? That was pretty cool.

"So you all made it through yet another semester," Max grinned at his students. "Not bad."

"And I'm sure you'll all be excited to know that I spent all weekend coming up with a suitably difficult final for all of you to demonstrate what you've learned this semester." That grin, combined with the fact that the Danger Shop was configured to look like an industrial kitchen today, was not precisely calculated to set anyone's minds at ease about Max's plans.

"This is definitely going to take until the end of the period, so if you've got any last-minute questions or comments then now is definitely the time to speak up with them.

After that was taken care of assuming anyone had anything to say, Max rolled his shoulders back. "Okay, with that out of the way, I suppose it's time to get started. I hope you're all ready for this. You have until the end of class to..."

"Bake a cake."

"The fridges are stocked and all the appliances work. Clock's ticking, people."

Alex didn't really have any questions for the exam but that didn't mean she wasn't nervous about it. She didn't know what to expect and was trying to remember every spell she'd learned, since she was sure she'd need them.

Momoko had a stomach ache and a headache (and possibly a toothache, she wasn't sure yet), but she was as full of energy as if she'd actually spent the weekend training for this final, and she was eager to see what they were going to do.

She raised a hand: "Are we allowed to use our powers or weapons?"

Although the kitchen stadium they were in totally had things they could use as weapons and defensive stuff... oh! Maybe that was the point?

The exam was to bake a cake?

Oh yeah, Alex could do this. She loved to bake! Now, the only question was if she should use her powers and if so, how much before it was considered cheating...

Baking a cake? Totally a piece of cake. No, don't pardon the pun. It was obligatory.

Even if Stephanie was still kind of sugared out from the weekend, she dove into the assignment with enthusiasm -- at least until she realized there was something really, really wonky with the recipe (http://e-wot.com/2010/01/the-cake-recipe-portal/) she was working from.

"Fish shaped volatile organic compounds? Sediment shaped sediment? Fiberglass surface resins, volatile malted milk impoundments, and an entry called How to Kill Someone With your Bare Hands?" That was just weird, but when she got to the three tablespoons of rhubarb on fire . . .

"WHAT?!?"

Max found his attention repeatedly pulled back to Miss Brown's station. Eventually he just couldn't stop himself from wandering over. "Huh," he murmured thoughtfully as he looked over her shoulder. "I'm not sure I want to know what you're doing."

Excellent! Karla had come in prepared to kick ass and take names, but this was great, too! She rolled up her sleeves (ignoring the lovely henna decorations that were still there) and got right to work.

She could totally do this!

...She was totally going to fail.

About halfway through the period, Max glanced over at Karla's station and frowned. Then he wandered over to take a closer look.

"What kind of cake is that?" he asked. Hesitantly.

Lion-o was very grateful that he'd spent so much time in the kitchens at the diner and Café Fina. It may not look very pretty, but the cake would be edible.

Momoko knew better than to ask some people *coff*Karla*coff* for help, but there was always her BFF who also happened to work in a diner and used to work at her favourite cafe and and and...

"Lion-o! Can you help me with my cake?"

At least Tara knew how to do this, and that hadn't changed with all the class sessions she'd missed.

She kept waiting for something to jump out at her as she measured flower, sugar and cocoa.

Max should have thought of that, really. He'd be kicking himself as soon as he realized he'd missed such an amazing opportunity.

It was like he knew her greatest weakness!!

Momoko paled and headed slowly into the pantry area for ingredients. She hoped beyond hope that there were recipes somewhere; all she could remember being in a cake was flour and sugar.

... "Pastry flour, all-purpose flour, enriched flour, rice flour, self-rising flour, bleached flour... How are there different types of flour?!" She really needed a recipe now.

As the smell of smoke rose from the oven, Momoko realized three simple facts:

1. She'd forgotten the baking powder again;
2. Cooking at a higher temperature did not mean a faster baked cake;
3. SOMEONE WAS NOT HER FIFTH FAVOURITEST TEACHER EVER ANYMORE!

Momoko gave Centurion a full second full of glares, then pulled out the burning mess and dumped it in the sink. She reached for the recipe she'd found to try yet again, and possibly make something that wouldn't have Jaime laughing at her when she told him about it. Since she was already sure she was going to fail the actual final.

Andros had absolutely no idea how to actually make a cake, he was a little thrown off but he still started to attempt to make his cake.

The key word was attempt.
