Finals. Finally.

Though, honestly, Max had rather enjoyed this semester. Fandom weirdness aside, he'd had a good group of students, and they'd seemed to learn something? That was pretty cool.

"So you all made it through yet another semester," Max grinned at his students. "Not bad."

"And I'm sure you'll all be excited to know that I spent all weekend coming up with a suitably difficult final for all of you to demonstrate what you've learned this semester." That grin, combined with the fact that the Danger Shop was configured to look like an industrial kitchen today, was not precisely calculated to set anyone's minds at ease about Max's plans.

"This is definitely going to take until the end of the period, so if you've got any last-minute questions or comments then now is definitely the time to speak up with them.

After that was taken care of ~~assuming anyone had anything to say~~, Max rolled his shoulders back. "Okay, with that out of the way, I suppose it's time to get started. I hope you're all ready for this. You have until the end of class to..."

"Bake a cake."

"The fridges are stocked and all the appliances work. Clock's ticking, people."

Lion-o carefully read over the recipe. "This one looks pretty simple," he finally decided. "The only thing that could ruin it is if you get the proportions wrong. If you don't have the right mix of ingredients, your cake batter won't rise and may come out like a big gooey mess."

He'd witnessed more than his share of those cakes that were so bad, they never left the kitchen.

The only thing? Oh ye of little faith.

"That's what I thought, but it's totally not coming out right." She gestured with an embarrassed grin towards her area's sink, where the previous attempts were waiting for disposal.

Do not ask how she got a green and black cake from a recipe for white.

Lion-o raised an eyebrow as he looked at the thing that could have been a cake. "Uh, did you use any food coloring on this?" he asked.

"Eh? No!" Momoko gasped and looked over her recipe. "Was I supposed to?"

"No! I mean, it's just that if you used the stuff that the recipe called for, the cake should have been white," said Lion-o, scratching his head. "Let's start with the dry ingredients. YOu're going to need flour, sugar and baking power. Not baking soda, though. That's something different."

"Okay!" Momoko checked and made sure she had the ingredients mentioned. "Got it. Are you sure baking soda is different? It looks the same..." She frowned at the measure.

"They are different according to the cheese grater," Lion-o insisted. "He told me that baking soda needs an activator but baking powder has the activator in there already. If you use baking soda, the cake won't rise."

"AH! That makes sense!" So, baking powder was the superhero ingredient... the one with powers! Why hadn't anyone ever just said that?

"Right." She grabbed the baking powder and started dumping it into the bowl. "So I mix all of these together right?"

"You, uh, probably want to measure everything out first," said Lion-o, looking rather worried at how Momoko was just tossing baking powder directly into the bowl. "If you don't have the ingredients mixed in just the right proportions, the cake won't bake properly. Also, you might want to pre-heat your oven first so that it's ready when you need it."

"Preheat the stove. Right. I'm always forgetting that." Momoko sighed and set down the baking powder before turning to the oven.

That done, she picked up the bowl and poured the powder into a measuring cup. "So should I measure everything first and just have them waiting until I need them? Or it that stupid?"

"It's not stupid at all! It actually makes everything very easy for you," said Lion-o. "And it's less likely that you'll make a mistake that way."

"Really?!" She perked up at that and made a mental note to buy lots of measuring cups to keep in her room.

"That's what they always did at Café Fina. The pepper shaker always said that it was much easier to be prepared and get it right on the first try than to salvage something that had gone wrong," said Lion-o.

Momoko sighed happily and smiled at him. "Thanks, Lion-o. I'm getting better at cooking, but cakes still scare me." She reached for the recipe and started to set out her ingredients so she could measure them. "There's so much that can go wrong and cakes are totally important to me.

"But once you master the cake recipe, think of all the great stuff you'll be able to make," Lion-o pointed out. "There's cupcakes, brownies, cookies, and lots of other good stuff."

Momoko raised an eyebrow at that. "How can making a cake help with all of that?"

"Suppose you wanted cupcakes instead of a cake," said Lion-o. "Instead of using a cake pan, just use a muffin pan with cupcake liners, pour the same batter we're making into them, and bake."

... "Seriously?!"

"It's true! A cupcake is really just a smaller version of a cake. They're made from the same stuff," said Lion-o.

Momoko grinned inanely. "So if I learn how to make this," she lifted the bowl she was mixing, "I can make all of those?! No one ever told me that! That is AWESOME!" And totally meant she was going to conquer this recipe, now!
