Finals. Finally.

Though, honestly, Max had rather enjoyed this semester. Fandom weirdness aside, he'd had a good group of students, and they'd seemed to learn something? That was pretty cool.

"So you all made it through yet another semester," Max grinned at his students. "Not bad."

"And I'm sure you'll all be excited to know that I spent all weekend coming up with a suitably difficult final for all of you to demonstrate what you've learned this semester." That grin, combined with the fact that the Danger Shop was configured to look like an industrial kitchen today, was not precisely calculated to set anyone's minds at ease about Max's plans.

"This is definitely going to take until the end of the period, so if you've got any last-minute questions or comments then now is definitely the time to speak up with them.

After that was taken care of ~~assuming anyone had anything to say~~, Max rolled his shoulders back. "Okay, with that out of the way, I suppose it's time to get started. I hope you're all ready for this. You have until the end of class to..."

"Bake a cake."

"The fridges are stocked and all the appliances work. Clock's ticking, people."

About halfway through the period, Max glanced over at Karla's station and frowned. Then he wandered over to take a closer look.

"What kind of cake is that?" he asked. Hesitantly.

"Uhhh, a couple different kinds?" Karla said cheerfully, giving him an unsure but game grin. "I found a few different ones that all sounded good, so I decided to combine them."

Hopefully, Karla would get points for creating a weapon, if nothing else.

"That's a pretty interesting approach."

Max made a note to check in later. If only to ensure that Karla hadn't set anything on fire.

"Good luck. And let me know how it turns out."

"Oh, don't worry," Karla said, grinning. "I'll be sharing with everyone!"

Poor everyone.

Glancing around, she wondered, "Do you know what Steph did with the volatile malted milk impoundments? I think I could use some."

Max, being a well-trained ~~spy~~ soldier, managed not to blanch. "Er. I think they were old."

That was possible, right?

"Hmm," Karla said, glancing around. "Maybe I'll just stick with the fish-shaped volatile organic compounds, then. I think they'll give the cake a nice kick."

Because that's what everyone wanted. A cake that kicked.

"I'm sure that's exactly what they'll do."

Max paused.

"Have you checked to make sure they haven't gone off, too?" Either by spoiling, or by exploding, or by doing whatever fish-shaped volatile organic compounds did.

"I'm starting to worry about the quality of this kitchen," Karla said waspishly. "What's the point of letting us cook if all the ingredients are spoiled?!"

Thank the Darkness the membranes had all been geosynthetic, even if it had been very difficult to find twelve.
