Finals. Finally.

Though, honestly, Max had rather enjoyed this semester. Fandom weirdness aside, he'd had a good group of students, and they'd seemed to learn something? That was pretty cool.

"So you all made it through yet another semester," Max grinned at his students. "Not bad."

"And I'm sure you'll all be excited to know that I spent all weekend coming up with a suitably difficult final for all of you to demonstrate what you've learned this semester." That grin, combined with the fact that the Danger Shop was configured to look like an industrial kitchen today, was not precisely calculated to set anyone's minds at ease about Max's plans.

"This is definitely going to take until the end of the period, so if you've got any last-minute questions or comments then now is definitely the time to speak up with them.

After that was taken care of ~~assuming anyone had anything to say~~, Max rolled his shoulders back. "Okay, with that out of the way, I suppose it's time to get started. I hope you're all ready for this. You have until the end of class to..."

"Bake a cake."

"The fridges are stocked and all the appliances work. Clock's ticking, people."

Momoko glared. And glared.

"You're very cruel, Centurion," she said, glaring. As she glared.

He quirked an eyebrow as if to say "is it?"

"I can't cook!" She shook her spoon to tsk at him, not really caring that it had batter on it. "It's like, the second worst thing I ever can't do! And it's nothing to do with fighting or my powers and it's totally not fair having a final over stuff we didn't learn in class!"

Unless it had been in the one she'd missed... But she didn't remember it on the syllabus.

Max eyed Momoko for a moment.

"Then why are you doing this by yourself?"

She stopped stirring her batter and stared at him like he'd... well, like he'd suggested she would cheat on a test. "Because it's a final? And it's not Teamwork class."

"And in a fight you're going to refuse help? Or refuse to offer it?"

Really, Momoko? Max sounded almost disappointed.

"It's not a fight! It's a cake!"

Well, for her it was totally a fight. An epic battle between Ranger and Range... Hero and Heating Unit... Good versus Grill...

It was a good thing she didn't say all that. Max would have failed her on the spot for pathetic punnery.

"It strikes me that you'd need less help in a fight," Max pointed out, eying the sink.

"Practice runs. Those were totally practice cakes. I'm doing the real one now."

"Ah. Of course."

Max shrugged. It was her cake to ruin. She didn't have to find a partner.

Actually... Max glanced over at Karla. Maybe it was best if she didn't.

"So..." She kept her eyes on her batter. "If someone were to ask for help, though, that would be okay? Even though it's a final?"

"Since asking for help is a pretty good indication that they know when they need it and how to get it, I'd judge that as a perfectly fine idea."

The real world mattered a lot more to Max than the classroom, after all.

"Awesome!" She set down her bowl with a sigh of relief. "Thank you! And you can be my fifth favourite teacher again."

Max snorted. "And who's ahead of me, dare I ask?"

Much happier now that she had a chance of not failing, Momoko counted off her favourites on her hand with her batter covered spoon.

"Rikku, because she's my big sib and just totally awesome. Reno, because he calls me rookie when I'm in his class and he's totally awesome anyway, too. Professor Deadpool gave me shoes and is really nice and knows a lot of stuff."

And here was probably the kicker. Sorry, Centurion. "And Professor Skywalker, but mostly in his flying courses, not the Ethics one." That one was rather boring. And didn't involve flying.

"Ah."

"Skywalker."

The idiot.

Max mentally ticked down his mental estimation of Momoko a few notches for that one.

Momoko nodded. "He has flight simulators, you know? And he lets us use them in class and when we had a flight club! You can program them to almost anything that flies, even mecha! Anemone did that once in flight club and it was awesome. I'd never piloted one of her type of mecha before and it was so much fun! It was like surfing in the air, and all the time we were in the simulator!"

It is possible she likes the flying parts more than anything else.

"Ah! Although sometimes we were in the Danger shop, too. Especially for any battles and actual exercises in the ships. And he promised we'd have a chance to fly a real ship, but we never did, so I am still mad about that. But he made such a cute kitty that it's hard to stay mad at him, remembering that."

"Riiiight," Max said slowly.

On second thought, maybe he was okay with only being her fifth favorite teacher...

His teaching her to use awesome new weapons and skills edged out Gibbs! And Gibbs had introduced her to Caff-pow, so Centurion should be proud of his achievement!

And anyway, he wasn't anywhere near Professor Holmes's rank, which was good, since Mojo Jojo was probably higher on the list of people she liked. And Mojo Jojo was an evil monkey with horrible fashion sense and a verbal tick.

Momoko smiled proudly and nodded, reaching for her recipe. "Exactly! So, since it's okay, I am totally going to go ask for some tips. Thanks, Centurion!"

"No problem," he chuckled.

"And good luck."

To whoever she asked.
