Myths and Legends of the Deep {Thursday, Period 2}

"I was going to prepare a lecture for today's topic on Selkies but I thought we could watch a movie instead. The film centers on a teenaged boy who learns that his mother has taken a job on a remote island off mainland Australia. He's shattered that he must leave his friends and girlfriend and come with them. But what begins as the worst experience of his entire life becomes an important journey of discovery, as he learns that he is somehow connected with a mysterious and legendary line of Selkies - people from ancient Scotland who have the power to change into seals."

Summer smiled, hoping her students would find the film entertaining.

"A bunch of people. It was kind of, uh, an angry mob," Jason said quietly.

Nico's eyes narrowed, focusing on the cast mostly as he thought about what must be wrong with some group of stupid, angry people if they went after Jason. And what he would like to do to them.

The sudden chill in the air might be chalked up to an oddity in the air conditioning by people not used to Nico's anger, but there was no hiding the burst of fear emanating from where Nico sat.

Jason's eyes got a little wide, and he reached over to put his good hand on Nico's arm. "Whoa, stop. It's okay now," he said. You know, aside from the cast and all. "Please don't be mad at me?"

"What?" Nico's eyes snapped to meet Jason's, looking more scared and worried than angry. "I'm not mad at you." Maybe a little annoyed, shh. "I'm mad at the people who did this to you. It's not okay. I mean, just look at you."

"It is okay. I've gotten better. I looked a lot worse a few days ago." Because that was totally the right thing to say right now. "I mean, it could have been a lot worse. And I brought it on myself, provoking people who were already angry." If Bruce didn't think they'd meant to hurt him, then maybe it was his fault.

Nico just shook his head, not getting how he was meant to react to hearing about this. He couldn't help feeling upset and maybe just a little scared at the thought that he'd been right to check that scrolling list in his head the night before.

He reached to cover up Jason's good hand with his own. "For Zeus' sake, Jay. I mean, it's good you're better. I guess they wouldn't have let you come back to school if you weren't. But I can't help feeling...like I want to help."

"Help how?" Jason asked, letting his fingers intertwine with Nico's. "I don't want to make you sit and listen to me talk about this or anything. That wouldn't be very fair to you." Plus, the less he thought about how he got hurt, the better. "Why were you looking for me?"

Nico shrugged, finding all those jumbled emotions hanging in his stomach relaxed a bit when Jason's fingers locked with his. "I wanted to see you. Weird, right?"

"No, that's not weird. That's nice. I like it when you want to see me," Jason said, getting quiet for a moment as a bunch of little lightbulbs went off over his head. "Should I--I had to leave really quickly on Tuesday, but, should I have told you I was going? I mean, were you...you know, worried?"

Nico nodded, finding that easier than words just in case it was wrong. "Usually if I hang around you show up eventually." And not the next day in class.

"And then I get to find you hanging around, like this really hot surprise," Jason said, looking genuinely guilty now. "I didn't mean to make you worry. I...I probably would have gotten worried too, if you weren't around and I didn't know where you were." Just imagining that made his stomach hurt a little, so he could only imagine what it must have been like for Nico, if Nico liked him even half as much as he liked Nico. "I'm sorry." He sat back in his chair and sighed. "I really suck at this, huh?"

"You only suck a little," Nico said, not letting Jason totally off the hook. "Telling me is good, then I don't have to keep checking if you died, which I'm not even sure is accurate considering where you're from. But trust me, right now I'm kinda more concerned about you being all beat up."

"You were checking to see if I died?" Jason asked, feeling even more guilty now. He did kind of deserve though, so he didn't press more. "I just broke my arm. And two fingers," he added quickly and quietly. "I'm more annoyed it's my writing arm. If people are going to break stuff, the least they can do is break stuff you don't use, right?" He smiled softly, hoping to calm Nico down a little. If they were alone in his room, he might have been more honest about how angry and upset he was, but he didn't want Nico freezing out their whole class.

"Not like that. It's just what I do." Nico didn't want Jason to think he'd been like, sitting in the dark assuming he was dead. That had so not been it. "That does suck," Nico agreed, having another look at the cast. "If you get desperate, I can always help with your homework. And stuff."

"And stuff?" Jason asked, smirking softly. "I'd like that. Bruce was kind of helpful, but you're a lot nicer than he is. And I can try to make up for worrying you somehow."

"I was just...concerned since you're usually around is all. And from the look of you, I was right so there's no making up for it," Nico told him.

"Does that mean you're going to stay mad at me?" Jason said. "I swear, I didn't know how much trouble I was going to be getting into at home."

"There's no need to make up for it," Nico sighed. "I'm not mad at you."

"Oh," Jason said, looking embarrassed. "Sorry. I just thought...I'm kind of used to that, I guess."

Nico gave Jason's hand a little squeeze. "Jay, I know I'm not really one to talk when it comes to holding grudges, but seriously, one look at you and I'm just glad you're here now."

"Me too," Jason said, squeezing Nico's hand in return. "If I tell you what happened will you promise to try not to get mad?"

The way he said that made Nico pretty sure he was going to get mad. "I can try, but freezing out the class might be unavoidable," he said quietly.

Jason sighed softly and leaned in closer to Nico. "There was a guy who was trying to get rid of all of my world's superheroes. He had people all worked up, saying heroes weren't needed, and we didn't know how angry people really were. Batman and I went to stop a hostage situation and when it was over, the hostages turned on us."

"Wait, the mob that attacked you was a bunch of people you'd helped?" Yeah, Nico was going to have to work really hard not to freeze anyone out.

"Yeah. They were bitching that we nearly got them killed, which we totally didn't, and then Batman and I got separated and the police made him leave without me and...it sucked, a lot. I got knocked out so I don't really remember what happened after that."
