Myths and Legends of the Deep {Thursday, Period 2}

"I was going to prepare a lecture for today's topic on Selkies but I thought we could watch a movie instead. The film centers on a teenaged boy who learns that his mother has taken a job on a remote island off mainland Australia. He's shattered that he must leave his friends and girlfriend and come with them. But what begins as the worst experience of his entire life becomes an important journey of discovery, as he learns that he is somehow connected with a mysterious and legendary line of Selkies - people from ancient Scotland who have the power to change into seals."

Summer smiled, hoping her students would find the film entertaining.

No real lecture because it's a movie day! Still, feel free to chat or pass notes as you do.

Summer's even provided ~~moddable~~ snacks (and drinks, of course), to munch on during the film.

Okay, so this maybe wasn't the greatest movie in the world, but it was still a movie and Luke was all for that. He was also all for hoarding the popcorn. Deal with it.

Percy could deal with a movie, no doubt. He grabbed some chips and sat back, hoping the movie was exciting enough to keep his attention.

Ariel's head tilted thoughtfully for a moment. Sure, she'd met a few seals in her day, but she never thought of them turning human, but, really, she should have, considering she'd turned into one herself. And it just made her wonder if fish could turn into humans, too, because then that would be the best ever, because then Flounder could visit her this weekend!

Her father was sure to have the power to do it, but that didn't mean he ever would, unfortunately...

After the week he'd had, Jason was very grateful for the movie day. He'd practically come to class straight from his portal, and he tried to sit down without calling attention to himself. He still had a black eye and the cast on his arm, and it made him feel kind of awkward.

Sure, Jason had never shown up the night before, but Nico really had not expected him to show up for class looking like he'd been hit by a bus.

Excuse Nico's staring.

Eventually he got up and moved to sit directly next to Jason, deciding that focusing on the movie was not going to happen. At least when he spoke he tried to whisper so as not to bother others. "Jay, are you okay?"

Jason might have looked a little guilty as he glanced over at Nico. "Um, for the most part. I look worse than I feel, I swear," he whispered back.

"What happened to you?" Nico hissed, a little confused by that look on Jason's face and deciding not to ask that particular question right away. "Where were you last night?"

"I had to go home for a few days," Jason said, skipping over the question about what happened to him and hoping Nico wouldn't notice. "I just got back this morning. Were you looking for me?"

Nico had actually fallen asleep in Jason's room, waiting for him to show up. While this was probably important information to share, Nico figured if Jason didn't expect him to look for him, he probably hadn't wanted Nico to do so - which kind of gave Nico a little twinge in his stomach. "I didn't know not to."

"It was a last minute trip. There was some seriously bad stuff going on and Bruce needed me," Jason explained. "If I'd known you were going to come looking for me, I would have left you a note or something. I was gone for two days, I didn't think it'd really be noticeable."

Right. Nico steeled his stomach and nodded, figuring he was a complete idiot for having noticed and then having actually cared enough to be concerned.

"Guess that's my bad," Nico replied quietly, doing what he could to force a smile he didn't feel. He could not, however, force himself to stop looking at Jason's injuries. "I probably shouldn't ask about how you got hurt, huh?"

She's there, both before and after class.

Go away, rain.

I am unhappy that I have never heard of this movie until now.
