Myths and Legends of the Deep {Thursday, Period 2}

"I was going to prepare a lecture for today's topic on Selkies but I thought we could watch a movie instead. The film centers on a teenaged boy who learns that his mother has taken a job on a remote island off mainland Australia. He's shattered that he must leave his friends and girlfriend and come with them. But what begins as the worst experience of his entire life becomes an important journey of discovery, as he learns that he is somehow connected with a mysterious and legendary line of Selkies - people from ancient Scotland who have the power to change into seals."

Summer smiled, hoping her students would find the film entertaining.

"Does that mean you're going to stay mad at me?" Jason said. "I swear, I didn't know how much trouble I was going to be getting into at home."

"There's no need to make up for it," Nico sighed. "I'm not mad at you."

"Oh," Jason said, looking embarrassed. "Sorry. I just thought...I'm kind of used to that, I guess."

Nico gave Jason's hand a little squeeze. "Jay, I know I'm not really one to talk when it comes to holding grudges, but seriously, one look at you and I'm just glad you're here now."

"Me too," Jason said, squeezing Nico's hand in return. "If I tell you what happened will you promise to try not to get mad?"

The way he said that made Nico pretty sure he was going to get mad. "I can try, but freezing out the class might be unavoidable," he said quietly.

Jason sighed softly and leaned in closer to Nico. "There was a guy who was trying to get rid of all of my world's superheroes. He had people all worked up, saying heroes weren't needed, and we didn't know how angry people really were. Batman and I went to stop a hostage situation and when it was over, the hostages turned on us."

"Wait, the mob that attacked you was a bunch of people you'd helped?" Yeah, Nico was going to have to work really hard not to freeze anyone out.

"Yeah. They were bitching that we nearly got them killed, which we totally didn't, and then Batman and I got separated and the police made him leave without me and...it sucked, a lot. I got knocked out so I don't really remember what happened after that."

Nico didn't think it was fair that he couldn't easily hug Jason in class, even if there was a movie. He just kinda, leaned closer, like his arm pressed against Jason's good arm would convey the same meaning. "I'm sorry that happened to you." He would still like to destroy these people.

"It's okay now. The guy lost and everyone's okay now. And I'm back here," Jason said, leaning closer to Nico in return.

Nico nodded, thinking both those things were for the best. "How long are you stuck with the cast?"

"A couple of weeks. It's already driving me crazy, but maybe I'll get used to it," Jason said, like he didn't think that was going to happen at all.
