Advanced Driver's Ed, Monday Period Two

Bond did not have any small children with him, as the island had apparently decided to spare him this time around.

"Given the circumstances, I feel it might be best for all concerned if today's class was somewhat less involved than usual," he said, nodding at the brightly colouredbumper cars set up in the middle of the Danger Shop. "The safeties are one, and there are one- and two-seater models depending for you to choose from depending on the ages and responsibility levels of your guests."

Since there were young children involved, Bond hadn't even planned any surprises into the simulation.

John had been expecting a little more from this class that his dad had talked about. He wasn't sure what good bright toys would be for anything - even if some of the kids seemed like they were having fun.

He stood a little apart from the class where he could watch everything carefully and make sure no one could sneak up on him or Kyle.

Which, since that was he most often did on entering a room, Bond noticed. "I'd guess you're here with Kyle."

There might have been a touch of pride in his voice.

John looked over at the grown up carefully. Kyle had said he was someone okay, but he couldn't help being suspicious.

"Yeah. He's going to be my dad."

Given what bits and pieces he knew of where Kyle came from, Bond approved of the distrust, it was a handy survival trait. "He's a good man."

That earned a near-smile from the boy. He approved of people liking Kyle. "That's what Mom says too," he admitted.

There was a full-out grin for Bond at that. Very few people bothered to admit to children when they were being stupid. "It's okay," John said expansively. "Sometimes it's good to say stuff that's obvious. I don't mind."

Bond returned the grin. "I'll state it one more time then, by suggesting you take after both your parents."

"Thanks," he said, looking down sheepishly. "But not yet. I got a lot to do first."

While taking a break fro the cars, Kyle came over when he saw Mr. Bond and John talking. "Met Mr. Bond?"

John nodded. "He's cooler than I thought with the -" he gestured at the toy cars.

"Some of the others are new at cars. He probably figured with the kids around that it was safer. I've been his teaching assistant since I got here. He knows a lot."

"What's a teaching assistant?" he asked, scuffing his foot along the ground.

"It's kind of like a lieutenant. I help with prep, demonstrations for the class and take over if he can't be here."

"Oh! You got a promotion," John said, understanding that perfectly. "Is your brother higher rank than you?"

Totally smooth transition.

"Not a promotion. More like a temporary assignment." Kyle looked confused. "You don't know Derek?" The small knot he always had in his gut got tighter.

"I don't know him now," he pointed out, hoping that Kyle would blame the timeline thing. "You're younger, remember?"

"Right," Kyle said, brushing it off. He'd assumed the worst and was relieved that wasn't what John had meant. "Timelines give me a headache. But yeah, he's a Lieutenant. I'm in his unit when I'm at home. I'm only a Private. Everyone starts somewhere."

It was weird thinking that he had an uncle somewhere out there. John also couldn't help wondering what his uncle had thought about him sending Kyle back in time.

"Private's good though," he pointed out. "I wish I had a brother."

He nodded. "What's it like having a brother?"

He was so suave.

Kyle looked behind him, then sat down and rested his arms on his knees. "Having someone you can trust no matter what. He'd die for me, and I'd die for him, but more importantly we stay alive for each other." He tried not to think about why John might not know everything about Derek. He settled on there being the war to fight and being out on missions. It wasn't like here, settling in one place. "We were separated a few years ago. I thought he was dead. After Dad died, Derek looked out for me. He taught me how to do everything I had to know to stay alive. Then he was gone and I had to look after myself. Then I met Star and I knew I had to look after her the way Derek looked after me. It wasn't until after I joined the Resistance that he got sprung from a work camp and I even knew he was still alive."

He sounded like Mom now. "I'm glad he wasn't dead," John said. Kyle had looked after his mom like he said Derek had after him. Poor Derek after Kyle left. "And then you get to go be in his unit until you get your own, right?"
