Advanced Driver's Ed, Monday Period Two

Bond did not have any small children with him, as the island had apparently decided to spare him this time around.

"Given the circumstances, I feel it might be best for all concerned if today's class was somewhat less involved than usual," he said, nodding at the brightly colouredbumper cars set up in the middle of the Danger Shop. "The safeties are one, and there are one- and two-seater models depending for you to choose from depending on the ages and responsibility levels of your guests."

Since there were young children involved, Bond hadn't even planned any surprises into the simulation.

"Oh! You got a promotion," John said, understanding that perfectly. "Is your brother higher rank than you?"

Totally smooth transition.

"Not a promotion. More like a temporary assignment." Kyle looked confused. "You don't know Derek?" The small knot he always had in his gut got tighter.

"I don't know him now," he pointed out, hoping that Kyle would blame the timeline thing. "You're younger, remember?"

"Right," Kyle said, brushing it off. He'd assumed the worst and was relieved that wasn't what John had meant. "Timelines give me a headache. But yeah, he's a Lieutenant. I'm in his unit when I'm at home. I'm only a Private. Everyone starts somewhere."

It was weird thinking that he had an uncle somewhere out there. John also couldn't help wondering what his uncle had thought about him sending Kyle back in time.

"Private's good though," he pointed out. "I wish I had a brother."

"Only child?"

He nodded. "What's it like having a brother?"

He was so suave.

Kyle looked behind him, then sat down and rested his arms on his knees. "Having someone you can trust no matter what. He'd die for me, and I'd die for him, but more importantly we stay alive for each other." He tried not to think about why John might not know everything about Derek. He settled on there being the war to fight and being out on missions. It wasn't like here, settling in one place. "We were separated a few years ago. I thought he was dead. After Dad died, Derek looked out for me. He taught me how to do everything I had to know to stay alive. Then he was gone and I had to look after myself. Then I met Star and I knew I had to look after her the way Derek looked after me. It wasn't until after I joined the Resistance that he got sprung from a work camp and I even knew he was still alive."

He sounded like Mom now. "I'm glad he wasn't dead," John said. Kyle had looked after his mom like he said Derek had after him. Poor Derek after Kyle left. "And then you get to go be in his unit until you get your own, right?"

He gave John a sidewards glance. "That's getting ahead of things. I'm only a Private. I've run one mission and it didn't go so well. I'll stay with Derek as long as I can."

John stared at Kyle a little, barely realising he'd slipped on the timeline. How could Kyle Reese screw up a mission? That was impossible. Everything his mom had told him - but...

"I didn't know you made mistakes," he said finally, sounding completely like a kid for once.

That got his attention. He couldn't stop a quiet laugh from slipping out. "It's good to know I might get better at hiding it when I do. Even John Connor makes mistakes." And that was saying something. "It's how you deal with your mistake and make up for it that decides how good you are at something, not whether you screw up in the first place."

He was startled at Kyle's mention of John Connor even though he knew that they knew each other. "Yeah, but it's better not to screw up in the first place," he pointed out.

"I'd like that, but reality has a habit of getting in the way."

"Reality's a bitch," John stated flatly.

"You said it. That's why sometimes it's fun to take an hour off and go drive bumper cars."

He looked a little uncertain. Mom didn't believe much in taking an hour off, but if Kyle thought it was okay then it probably was, right?

John smiled a bit at the comment. "It could be fun to crash into some cars," he allowed.

"I can keep watch if you want to give it a try."

"Yeah, okay," he said, smiling more broadly. "Let me know when it's my turn to watch."

Kyle suppressed a smile at seeing John act like a kid for once and nodded. "I will."
